I did something similar to this. I have a 2W rated diode and sitting in its heat sink the beam is nice and tight up close to a surface. If I pull back the beam becomes rectangular suggesting that this is the shape of the diode's aperture. Now I can focus it again, but at distances of a few inches I can never get the beam to "tighten" to a dot. Also, up close on a *white* piece of paper with the beam focused to a small dot the paper is unaffected. Questions: 1) Is a white sheet of paper too reflective to actually allow for penetration of the beam? 2) The laser diode carrier came with a lens threaded to go into the barrel of the carrier and another knurled one to go on top. I've tried various combinations (turning the interior lens backward for example), but still seems I can't get the beam to focus more than an inch or so from the surface. Any thoughts there?

I want to create like a brass knuckle that folds out. Or something that could grab a knife / block a bullet. Titanium is best, but it's difficult to work with since its so tough and I don't know if it can weld. Everything would have to be drilled and riveted.
