I love how every portrayal of James Bond always has the same kind of reactions to awesome technology. For example, the car that can turn invisible, most other characters would go: "Oh my god! That is absolutely INSANE!" But, the character of James Bond just goes: "Oh, very good"

Only I noticed that before every mission he was given only the equipment he needed beforehand? In reality, you can find yourself in the center of the ocean with a parachute, or at altitude with an inflatable boat ... Some gadgets look very interesting and very useful. Something can be successfully replaced with existing devices and not cause suspicion if you caught. And some things are either very narrowly specialized or unnecessary at all. One of my favorite, and most versatile, devices will be the 50 gold coin strap from the suitcase.

+Sezpa Sörs me too, because that's the last time we ever see Desmond Llewellyn as Q. He didn't HAVE to come back for the Brosnan era. He could've retired alongside the rest of the pre-Brosnan cast; the pre-Brosnan M, the pre-Brosnan Felix, and the pre-Brosnan Moneypenny! But he didn't! All the way from "From Russia With Love", Desmond Llewellyn stuck around, even as the original Moneypenny died, and the original M died, and Sean Connery retired as the original Bond! That, along with his every scene that he's in makes today's Q look like a shithead!

They do and they don't which is more than what was done in the past now that Danjaq/EON now owns the rights to it too. Not always the case in years past. There has been talk of squeezing in a gunbarrel in NSNA for future releases but most of the time, they decide against it. Danjaq/EON wisely doesn't want to go down the George Lucas rabbit hole of editing as was done with Star Wars. Most Bond box sets or digital equivalents now include NSNA as does most musical re-releases in physical and digital media include its soundtrack along cover versions, original versions, re-composed versions. NSNA gets way more acknowledgement nowadays than it ever did. One of a few cult classics in the Bond world, OHMSS, The Man With The Golden Gun, A View To A Kill to name a few. Many recognize Barbara Carrera was just as bit as deliciously evil as Fatima Blush on par with Luiciana Paluzzi as her prototype, Fiona Volpe though in my eyes the fiery red hair and much bigger boobs edges Barbara Carrera out, just a little. That's more my admiration and preference for hourglass, apple or pear shaped women more than anything else. Her acting abilities were excellent and wig-splitting of poor Jack Petachi was up there. Kim Basinger, try as she might was no Claudine Auger. Her Domino beats Kim's by a considerable margin. Only one of two French Bond girls and only one who came close to Claudine Auger looks and attitude wise and could have pulled Domino off was For Your Eyes Only's Carole Bouquet.

Nicely done. The gadgets were always fun to see, though the majority of them were highly improbable in their ability to actually work, more so for the high intensity lasers built into tiny things like watches and gun sights. Even today, we still don't have the tech to do that. We have powerful lasers in flashlight-sized or gun sight-sized cases, but none with the ability to burn through metal or even a whole car.

I hope future Bond films bring back the gadgets. While I didn't like that Craig's films had little gadgets, it made sense because it's supposed to be modern and realistic. Why have a bunch of gadgets when you can have a smartphone that does everything? :P The problem with that though was that one of the things that makes James Bond stand out from other Spy films was the gadgets! While some looked silly it was cool that Bond would have these devices that did a bunch of cool spy stuff like having a car that could have guns or spit out oil to help in a car chase. At times Daniel Craig felt more like a generic spy than James Bond in my opinion because the lack of gadgets made him feel less unique. I enjoyed his films but I want to see a Bond that uses gadgets again. I don't care if it's over the top like that Invisible Car in Die Another Day at least it's something cool that normal cars can't do and would be really helpful in a stealth mission.

What makes even less sense to me is that movies like Mission: Impossible keep a fairly high gadget count and still make pretty good films in the end. A smartphone is a versatile device that Q could do a lot with. I think the fear is that it might get stale fast if Bond just has a magic phone like the Doctor has his sonic screwdriver. What bothers me is Craig's Bond's self reliance makes him look a little too durable in my eyes to the point of being a superhuman, and I feel that the silliness of the gadgets is replaced with Bond being a little too physically out-there in order to make up for their absence; having the ability to shoot a helicopter down with a pistol, blow up a SPECTRE base in a minute and ten seconds flat, and his cowboy tactics/antics (tantics?) of blowing up embassies and smashing through cars arguably before he has the chance to properly use them are much sillier to me than the Vanquish or the avalanche jacket ever were. I guess the bomb in the watch is Spectre's attempt at introducing gadgets that can be applied to a variety of situations instead of being the exact right fit in the situational hole that Bond finds himself in, but I personally enjoy it when the pieces fit like that.

One could also argue that since Craig's movies were reboots the lack of gadgets line up with Q-branch not being created yet? Or at least not being funded that much.
