I would make a mold of a tiny cylinder diner, not too large yet not too small. Fit inside the fully soldered and connected LM317 ballast. Use rubber insulated wire for the inputs and outputs. Fill the mold with resin, and wait for it to harden. To make sure the wires don’t screw up, use a thick set ceramic glue to cap off the wires going in and out, almost like that on flyback transformer pins. Then make a thin 3D printed case, fill it with a tiny amount of the same ceramic glue, and press fit it on. Put a nice sticker on it, and try to color code the wires.

Very useful tutorial! Recently I detached a laser diode from an old DVD Writer SH-S223. It's an open type diode with no glass protection. I'm using this schematic with LM317, the resistor is around 14 ohms, but the diode (in its original, though small, heatsink) gets hot after 2-3 minutes of work. Is this normal or I have to add more resistance? I'm using two 3,7V Li-ion batteries in series for power supply. Unfortunately I couldn't find diode specs anywhere to see its operating current.

Nice, I tried it but with different setup, my laser comes on but can't burn, i measured the amperage i get 0.39mA at 3.3volts, am using a netgear modem router as power supply, there is a transistor inside that supplies 3.3v not sure the amps but it can light up white LEDs at 3.3v 0.35mA too, i tried to see how many it can power and the more LEDs i put the more amps it ads like for 3 LEDs mA goes to 0.56 and they stay at full bright.

I bought a Lm 317t chip and soldered it to the circuit, But i desited to remove it cause it got too weak. So i run it on 3 AAA batteries and no components. I hope that the diode dosen't burn out too soon! I dont now the point of this comment But thanks for the video!

if you have a multimeter, most have a diode setting that you can use to determine the polarity of diodes/LEDs. it usually beeps to indicate that you have found the correct polarity. if it doesnt beep when you test both polarities, its broken

@@brendonlovejoy2376 Use Ohms range to see if it is still a diode, or has melted into a short circuit, or a wobble-bonded lead-in has fused open circuit. Always monitor the current using 50mA- 100mA range when playing around. If you connect it "wrong way round", unless the supply is much more than 5volts, no harm will come because no current will flow.

Hey I was wondering if the heat gets unbearable for the later? I am about to assemble one and the thought went through my head- won't the diode just pop when you turn it on? You are effectively making a generator to reach enough power for the diode but... Isn't it too much? Or even if the diode survives isn't it getting too hot?

you can use the exact same schematic yes. But you will need to use a different resistor to power this. In the video the guy posted the formula to find the output amperage of the driver. the current output is 1.25v divided by the resistor value. Experiment with the resistor value on paper to find the correct current value that will run your laser diode.

Зачем ограничивать напряжение для NCP1529? Cycle-by-cycle Current Limitation From the block diagram, an ILIM comparator is used to realize cycle-by-cycle current limit protection. The comparator compares the SW pin voltage with the reference voltage, which is biased by a constant current. If the inductor current reaches the limit, the ILIM comparator detects the SW voltage falling below the reference voltage and releases the signal to turn off the switch Q1. The cycle-by-cycle current limit is set at 1200 mA (nom)

The "Transistor" was an LM317 Integrated circuit, arranged to supply a fixed current if the battery volts/condition changes.

Can you use a 3.7V battery with the lm317 and the 3.3 ohm resistor, and put it all into a flashlight housing? Pls answer..... Thanks

Hi, i have several questions for you. I want to build this project but i could not find ncp1529 can you recommend me the similar component of it? How can i find the laser diode list? How much power of the laser should be at least for your circuit? Does the wavelength of laser effect the power? Thanks already

Do you happen to have any info about what kind of temperature you can achieve using a battery powered setup like this? Have you ever done any thermal measurements of a surface that's directly hit by the beam? I understand that the actual temperature reached is mostly related to the physical material properties of the object and for how long it's been absorbing the light's energy, but I'm just interested what a simple diode on a lithium cell could be capable of in terms of cutting through/into certain materials. (more specifically: can a setup like this ignite a small spot on a piece of charcoal before the battery is drained you think?)
