Nope, not just you. This whole feud has felt like Punk's trying to give a deeper meaning to something that just isn't there. Every promo feels like he's pulling teeth just to hype this match to make it seem like he's not just another brand name tomato can for Page to knock down to pad his reign, and Hangman hasn't been much help. It's sad because it's made me dread either outcome. If Page wins, it's just another short run program in a reign that's desperate for a longterm rivalry. If Punk wins, I worry about Page being able to regain any level of legitimacy because all of the bigger and more interesting contenders that'll be next in line. This match doesn't need another kneejerk heel turn in an AEW title picture, or another worked shoot angle between two guys with little more than immediate history, or another time limit draw finish. What it does need is something to actually make it interesting and not all about Punk, and maybe a followup match after there's a finish that could spike enough intrigue to warrant a rematch.

  • @microwaveablejunk

This. I think AEW is setting up a heel turn for CM Punk. Hangman was heavily insinuating that CM is not what he seems in front of the crowd. Hangman is motivated with righteous anger. More, the suddenness of the build and the fact that Hangman's pipebomb was only hinted at the go-home show means that this feud is not a one-and-done. CM Punk as heel champ with Hangman chasing is good TV. But I sure damn want to see Hangman retain.

What makes me so excited about this match is that for the first time, there is no clear winner for the AEW title. Every other time the belt has been defended on PPV, there was an obvious choice as to who was the right guy to walk away with the title around their waist and Tony Khan made sure that the right man won. Now though, I can really see it go both ways, CM Punk's return has been one for the books with must watch matches & promos, you can tell that it will eventually lead to being world champion again, but the years of build up for Hangman Page to become the face of AEW make me feel like there is more that they still want to tell with him as champion.

I think they're saving Hangmans big promo for after he loses the title to punk. What it sounded like to me is Hangman wanted to tell punk about himself, but he realized being that angry guy isn't him and he doesn't want to stoop to Punks level. So he'll just let his match do the talking. The problem is, if punk has gotten him angry, he's out of his game and can make a mistake that punk capitalizes on to win the title.

The ‘home grown’ guy already got the title. That’s Hangman right now. But honestly, he was booked like a joke every single day UNTIL the day he became champion. And he’s been an unconvincing champion. Outperformed from Day 1 by Danielson, who should have beat him for title. Now Page rightfully defeated Cole, who has been booked like a bigger joke. But when put side-by-side with Punk, we all know who should be the top guy. Let’s be real. Time for the Hangman experiment to end. Punk for champ is best for business, and best for putting some serious rub on the championship. That is, until the next ‘home grown’ guy who has actually earned the spot and deserves the top prize comes along: MJF. A man so dedicated to his craft, it will honestly be a travesty if Tony Khan doesn’t negotiate and keep him for the long term. The guy is top tier pro wrestler. And the best non-former-WWE wrestler on their entire roster.

You know, I can say right now, Sept. 05, 2022. Punk was right at being mad at him. Hangman was trying to do business for himself and the boys in this promo, and I understand, I get why you would hate Punk or guys like him because he can be an asshole, but he was in the wrong right here because Punk was a babyface. He needs to understand the business. You can't bury the babyfaces or else, your company would not draw for lack of "legimitacy", kayfabe speaking. MJF's promo were spot on because he spoke on actual facts that everybody knew what happened, but this was bs, and I thought Punk was in the wrong of course at calling him out on promo time because Hangman is a babyface too, and media scrum was a disaster too, but now I get why Punk was very mad. And the swings he took I also disagree with that, but Hangman started this.

I honestly think this feud has been lackluster. There are so many things they could have done that would have shot this into the next level and on par with the best feuds in AEW history. You have maybe the best talker in the business in the last 20 years, and a white hot babyface champ riding the crest of a wave. What we got is - Hangman and Punk staring at each other for a couple of weeks, Punk using Hangman's finisher and Page getting upset, Hangman using Punk's finisher and Punk just smiling and clapping. And the face to face this week, on the go home show. Yes it was an intense promo, specially from Hangman, but I can't help but feel how different this feud could have been. These are just my 2 cents: 1. They could have mentioned Page's drinking and Punk being straight-edge. I know maybe because of Moxley they didn't want to go in that direction, and also because Page quit drinking on camera recently. But I am damn sure if it was MJF and Page feuding, MJF would definitely have brought this up. And it would generate a lot of heat too! 2. They could have leaned on Punk being old (certainly older than most of the guys on the roster) and Hangman being much younger and one for the future. The old man vs. future star trope that we see so much in wrestling, except in this case you know Punk would have sold the sh!t out of it. 3. Hangman's changed demeanor recently in his feuds with Archer and Cole. How he was turning into the person he didn't want to be. Punk could have driven home this point, and in the process continued Hangman's story into the next chapter.

I don’t know if you have Hangman win here. I don’t think it’ll kill his future if he loses (maybe Punk does something slightly not on-the-level or something to further that story). Page has had a decent run as champ, has a PPV defense along with all the other big matches he’s had on Dynamite, so his run is definitely not a bust. Plus, a lot of times, wrestlers second runs are better than their first. As mentioned, he’s young and has many more opportunities ahead. With Punk, he is undoubtedly one of, if not AEW’s biggest stars at the moment. I don’t think it’s “rushing” if he wins it here, as he’s been involved in several programs so far (including what may be AEWs best one yet with MJF). I also don’t think you have Punk win it on Dynamite or something, so it would have to be here, as I don’t think they want the same match two PPV’s in a row. I think now may be the time to pull the trigger. Could go either way though, there are legitimate arguments for both sides, I just think the arguments for Punk are stronger at the moment, but who knows? I do like not having the best idea what the outcome will be though, it makes for far more compelling viewing.

Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole, and now CM Punk. 2 guys fresh out of WWE and 1 guy in Punk who could've been in AEW from the beginning if he wanted too. That's why I think Hangman is taking this stance of defending AEW from punk because he's been essentially defending his championship against invaders. And this is the biggest invader of them all because he essentially waited and took advantage of all the work people like Hangman did to build AEW And Punk is just being real about it. Even mirroring that cody rhodes TNT Championship ladder match promo where cody mentioned how the pipe bomb mightve been indirectly the reason why this entire revolution was started in the first place. Hangman calling CM Punk a p.o.s backstage is similar to what MJF was talking about with Punk, so the seeds are planted with Punk goes heel

Here my thinking. Punk in this storyline is like Triple H in 2011 and Page is CM Punk. Page is trying to expose Punk for being a crap guy behind the scenes and Punk is trying to present himself as a hero on TV (like Triple H did in 2011 with his feud with Punk). For Punk it’s professional, he just wants the title, for Page it’s personal because he is very much a real guy and probably hates the fact there is this guy who is fake but people believe is genuine. Kind of inadvertently discredits his journey. Fantastic work. If I’m AEW, Page wins CLEAN as a whistle. Punk goes after Okada for Forbidden Door and the Page feuds continues after he loses there and then he is a heel who is desperate because now, he is starting to loose and maybe he can’t get to the top of the card and he thinks he is the baby face because he doesn’t want to let the fans down (covering up the fact he is a heel) and then he fully becomes heel after he beats Page in the rematch. If AEW ever want to do face MJF then a feud with heel Punk is the only way I would support it.

Agreed. I dont understand people acting like this was any good. Hangman basically just ranted and raved and came across as crazy because everything he thinks is happening is only within his own head. He didn't actually say anything, tell a story, or show any real charisma.

Taking everything said in the promo at face value - Punk, or someone advocating for Punk, made the case that him winning the AEW title is what’s best for business. Page, or someone advocating for Page, recognizes how much his win meant for the homegrown AEW talent even if it’s lackluster business. Neither 100% fit this characterization of themselves or the other, nor are either of them lying. I do not like Page’s reign, it started well then immediately lost focus once his fued with Danielson ended. But hot darn am I invested in this particular match now.

This form of heat is too inside baseball for me in a negative way. Its basically telling everyone out there this isn't a sport. This is completely fake. When everyone is backstage we're all great friends who plan out our matches together in order to produce the promised finish. Think about that stuff instead of the match. To be completely fair WWE does this as well with the notion of a locker room leader. Never liked that concept being brought up on tv either. I suspect I'm in the minority here but I guess we'll see.

I don't think it breaks kayfabe. It just says that there's a level of expected behavior backstage, and Punk doesn't follow whatever 'code' there is back there. To the determent of all. Page knows that if Punk is champ this 'cancer' will grow behind the scenes. It's the same in real sports. Except no one would say anything until their career was over and they write a book or something. But reporters do get off the record 'feelings' that players are releved when a toxic player is traded etc.

I appreciate Dave's view on Punk vs Page in terms of wins and losses but the reality is Hangman has been a super weak champion for the company. He had a strong story to reach that point and in WWE fashion there was no compelling follow through after the Wrestlemania moment. I don't think should win. I think it does more good for the company to have Punk take the title ASAP. This doesn't need to become a multi year saga like Brock and Roman to keep both men strong. AEW can and should do that but I don't think this is the pairing to do that with. Let hangman drop down in the card and replace him with one of the other dozen potential future stars of the company and see if they can have a run that pays off better. The thing with 'too many' stars on the roster is you can cycle through them to find the best fit and you can always build up others later. I'm not saying hangman should be booked as a jobber. Give him the Cesaro role where he's a strong midcard threat or a tag guy again. But lets see if its time for Miro or Black or Jungle Boy or Skye or Darbie or Orange or, etc etc to take that place.

Whichever feud punk involves in looks top notch. He makes his opponent look worth something. Hangman was better at chasing the title. It's time to move on to punk for dream storylines.
