Спорт

In a joint podcast with Average Jack Archery owner Nathan Sellers we discuss owning an archery shop. In this video I reflect on owning and working in an archery business for 40 years.
I discuss how owning an archery business in Australia is different to the USA.

Nate's wife here--- in it for the long run! Haha! He actually quit teaching this year and now is part of the marketing and influencer team for Huntworth Camo (based out of Pittsburgh). He works remotely, I work part time remotely, home school the kids, and then we both help run the shop 4 nights a week. Busy life, but wouldn't want it any other way. He watches all of your videos, Steven-- thanks for having a chat with him!!

Montana hunter and outdoor sporting goods junkie here. I think that the archery industry in the US is really growing but the price of new big name bows is keeping some hunters out of the market. New Prime, Hoyt, Matthews, Elite bows are over $1000 US closer to $1200-1300. You can purchase a used bow of a couple years old for 1/2 that but even then you buy a new rifle of good quality with a scope on it for $450-600. Savage, Ruger, Bergara to name a few. If you want to get into bird hunting or turkey hunting you can purchase well made shotguns from Turkey for $375-500. You buy a box of rifle ammo for $25 or shotgun shells for $10 and you go hunting. With a bow you purchase a bow for 12-$1300, arrows for $65-85, a release for $50-100, a sight for $50-350, a stabilizer for $50, string silencers, limb silencers, a quiver, etc. or a package bow is still gonna run you around $600-700 for a big box store branded one like Sportsman's, Scheels or Cabelas. The archery manufacturers are what make it hard on archery stores. Not to mention MAP pricing thats usually regionally based.

I really appreciated your talk! Very interesting to see a true giant and a relatively "fresh off the rack" dealer going through exactly the same stuff I'm dealing with myself. I started my shop in Norway part time two-three years ago. Norway is a country with no bowhunting, so no real full time dealers. I'm working 24/7, fulltime job on the side starting from absolutely zero, and growing. But MAN, loving it, and thankfully my wife is supportive so far 😅

Absolutely true because all the hard work done within a shoestring entrepreneurial venture is stymied by Gov't taxes, bureaucracies, and regulations. The reasons why this anti entrepreneurial climate has escalated over the last 5 to 7 decades is obvious to all of us entrepreneurs and ex-entrepreneurs - government control via ideological oppression.

Edit: this gets a bit long, I have a back injury, neurological disorder similar to Parkinson's and they gave me lovely new painkillers As someone who has a lot of American friends and is just getting into Archery and wanting to bowhunting. Your comments about how hard it is to get any dealership or import and basically just getting things here in Australia. My experience is wanting to buy something like a Topoint T1 etc and upgrade it and whatnot,,, but everyone I know in America lose their mind with "Chinese stuff always breaks: etc etc etc etc etc. They just don't understand how isolated we are as a country from that world, how hard it is to import things here in general and it's created this culture worldwide where people either will stick to their "I just have $200 sort me out" OR " I want the $2299 Mathews" that they then return for a trade in and it never gets sold. Now as your comments on wages etc, I've been screaming this for a long time. The Real Estate AND Insurance companies have been more to blame than anyone else. A current system of "dutch auctions" for all real estate purchases, where the property is advertised (for example) as "Offers Over $500k". Well I'm sure you remember BEFORE there was a process where one weekend, where everyone had a look and then placed an "offer" by Monday. This has created a system where the ultra wealthy can come in and offer double or higher than the "asking" price while every other offer has been around that original $500k example. Now that's fine, completely fine, in an auction setting. People understand there is one weekend to purchase the property based on the highest bidder and they will see that every "bid" was in the same ballpark except for one that swept in and doubled what was asking. So what's wrong with this? The problem iss the mega wealthy swoop in and buy property at an extremely inflated price in a silent auction like setting. This then inflates the cost of all property in the suburb, because if one or two houses or commercial properties suddenly doubled or tripled the expected sales price. Everyone will start selling at those inflated prices OR landlordds can inflate the rent because of course, suddenly your rent is far too low for such an expensive suburb. How does this factor into your comment about wages? When it comes to the cost of living, apart from food, what can be more import than the actual place they live, or do business? Then there's insurance.... I don't mean to be condescending at all and mean this completely truthfully but you may not be aware down in SA of the absurdity when it comes to insurance premiums related to natural disasters, particularly the insanity of insurance companies blurring the line between the legal definitions of stormwater damage and flood. Now anything from the Qld/NSW border north has seen an absolutely INSANE increase in premiums, often to the point of being higher than the assets of some businesses for example. How is this effecting wages? What's the point? To be blunt and quick, many people are spending fortunes on insurance that refuses to cover them or they are unable to insurer and we are seeing absolutely catastrophic financial losses that will only increase with the current climate. So we are left with a system where real estate agencies, the ultra wealthy are able to make a large amount of money from property, (the second most important thing when it comes to the cost of living) and inflate this for everyone else around them and insurance companies becoming extremely risk averse, even though Insurance is literally the business of loss management (I've worked as an Insurance Broker for 15 years and my father is an expert who spent nearly half a century as a broker). We live in a country with a rapidly inflating property sector, almost by design or more likely out of carelessness and extreme financial loss as the new normal. Rather than take on the large property developers or insurance industry to battle inflation, wages have become the number one issue because then it seems to turn the argument inwards towards each other and away from the giants causing this mess. For example, if a property is to be purchased for greater than double the asking price/other offers this information could be disclosed without giving the name away or something; and let me be clear I have benefited from a crazy boom in my chosen suburb. A house purchased in 2014 for $300k sold for $1mil in 2020 admittedly with about $120k renos doone to ti. = We thought that was amazing until we realised we couldn't find a place to live without moving nearly an hour away into a smaller, dilapidated house. For insurance you could quite easily remove the companies for offering or having anything to do with natural catastrophe and add a very small levy to your rates bill. When another part of the country gets covered in water or lights on fire, that money is already there and losses are covered. It's very easy for people to get upset with wages when you're running your own business (again, my dad ran his own brokerage for just shy of 30 years) and extremely easy for employees to get upset they're not getting a raise.... but if everyone focused their attention on these sectors and the few major property moguls happy to spend $1.2mil on a realistically $300k property, then up the rent from $300 a week to $750 to make up for the short fall.... or the insurance companies refusing to cover any of their client's losses! Sorry, big long rant ended. I love your channel

In the US generally, it's not that people don't _want_ to work (they actually do), it's that they simply _can't afford_ to work at lower wage levels. No American worker can survive anywhere in the US on $7/hour or even twice that. You just can't tie up 40 hours a week of your time like that here; the ROI is simply too low. So, their only options are either higher paying jobs or going into organized crime. Guess which one is becoming the more popular option.... That puts small businesses like archery shops in a bind - the only way to make a fortune here is to start with a big one, and know when to stop. And that's why we get the smaller number of bigger operations and the small shops are dying out. That's too bad but it is what it is here....
