Extremely helpful. Thanks Steve.
Amazing the ideal on
Hi Steven! Fantastic and inspiring video really like your channel in general! :) FINALLY someone is publicly talking about the importance of gym weight training for archery and generally for good health! It is SO underrated part of the sport to prevent injuries and just generally be better in archery thanks to the increased strength muscle/joint health. Especially the rotator training and the smaller back muscles which are under tremendous strain with archery. However, my experience is also that with a fulltime dayjob and family it is not easy to balance these things out, and cannot really do physically both archery and gym on the same afternnon/evening it is just too much. At least couldn't really figured out a good solution to this dilemma. Right now I have been trying to commit to 3 days gym and 3 days archery with one day full rest per week and hope it will work in the long run. Of course with that I don't expect to be an "archery champion" in any field, but could enjoy both sports at the same time at least on an average level. Previously I tried too much of each and the results were that either I quit archery or the gym for a while, but that is not a good solution of course... How everyone else solve this type of dilemma? How do YOU guys train those who love both fitness AND archery equally? :) Let's talk about this!
The biggest downfall of American consumers of Archery products, is that the so called “ Made In America “ mentality has driven American consumer to only buy “ American made “ . Whereas for many generations it has been engrained into their heads that any other product made elsewhere, is inferior to them. On the other hand, there have been in the past of “ Cheap “ products ( inferior quality products ) that have been bought by the American consumer, giving them the lack of confidence in “ Quality “ products. But more often than not, American consumers lack the knowledge sometimes, that even “ Made In America “ products can sometimes often be of “ inferior quality sometimes also. And that’s because there’s are some shady companies out there that are only interested in ripping off the consumer. Therefore it’s a toss up of taking that risk of getting “ Ripped Off “ or actually buying a REAL QUALITY product, for a whole LOT LESS money. In my personal experience, I find that Sanlida has got some REAL QUALITY stuff, for WAYYYY less than some of those so called “ High end “ companies out there, and I’ve seen some ordinary average archers beat even the most experienced seasoned Archers with all their “ High End “ equipment. Unfortunately many American Archers of today, cannot differentiate what it takes to be “ World Class “ solely because of their equipment. It’s mostly a “ Brand thing “ or possibly an “ Elitist “ thing 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ Pretty sad if ya ask me. Thanks for posting Steve, and as always…..love all your content 😇🙏🏹🏹🏹🇺🇸🇵🇭🇺🇸🇵🇭🇺🇸🇵🇭👍
Wow, I feel the strain on my body if I shoot my 55 lb bow 200 shots per day. On the other hand if you want to shoot a compound well enough to take down a deer you can shoot like 3 shots per week.
All true Steve, & great insight. It's good to put it out there - you won't get good scores by luck, but by dedication & preserverence.
I’ve seen Darrell Pace or Jay Barrs, one of the two not sure which, quote that as a daily expectation. But then they were for all intents and purposes professional because they never had to fit in any paid employment. When I went back to shooting it was my intention to shoot more or less every day when I retired but illness (Parkinson’s) intervened and I now shoot air rifle three times a week instead…
Do you have a coach.? If not why not.? All that practice is useless unless your practicing perfectly.
Dont get the covid vaccine so you dont have heart problems
Can’t imagine the number of improperly fired shots that would happen shooting that many arrows in a day. The requirements on the body would be enormous. The “ real Dave Cousins” told he was shooting 5-7 hundred a day to get ready to go to Europe for the old PRO SERIES field shoot in England. That was like 8-10? years ago before COVID destroyed that event. He was putting together his sight marks for the various angles. Look up pro series and watch world class archers shoot world class designed field rounds.
Sometimes it's the truth that hurts most.
For me (i'm no athlete) i find i preform best if i have one shooting day in 2-3 normal days, not if a shoot a significant amount of arrows every day. Same with physical training for me, i discovered that i get the best results if i train 2-3 times a week, not every second day or god forbid every day.
You don't know Steve, son!
I dont even shoot 800 arrows a month. I currently shoot maybe 300 per month. Am I good... Not really.. I'll consider myself competent. Do I enjoy it.... Yes.
Really best video i ever see in 2024
Since I retired, I could manage to shoot 6 times a week 150 Arrows. This allows to keep even as senior the level of muscles. You gain more success as side effect and it is nice to spend sunny days outside on the shooting range. Rain sucks, but is no excuse. I support your statement that investing in a career as top archer, you have to invest more
In my average life ( fulltime job plus a few hours in a second job on the weekend) I am more than happy to shoot 400 arrows a week. And thats not even happening every week. Thanks for your content!

Few people I see shooting really appreciate this.
800 arrows a day? There goes the job!!
That is the job...
Steven, I watch most of your videos and pay close attention to your advice on shooting and equipment. So thanks for those videos. I am an over 60 recurve shooter on my second year of competition, in total about 2 1/2 years shooting. Generally speaking as I have improved my gear my scores have improved incrementally. However I recently made one change to my set up which gave me an almost immediate 12 point increase in my outdoor 36 arrow average. I had my 36 arrow round up to an average of about 289 with an occasional 294 -296 but it was a serious struggle and I couldn’t pull two rounds together for a good score. I struggled so much getting through the clicker that by the end of 72 arrows I was exhausted. I work out regularly and do well on the weights, but the clicker was victimizing me. A friend gave me an aperture for my site that is just a ring whereas my previous aperture had a dot. The first time I shot the ring with no dot, I shot a PR. I went back the next day and shot another PR. Shooting the ring (ghost ring) has made getting through the clicker almost effortless. I didn’t realize it, but I guess I had target panic and not having the dot to worry about has reduced the stress to almost zero. I just put the ring approximately around the target and let it fly. I don’t worry about it being perfect, I just get it about 90% and let it click. I shot another 72 arrow round today and shot another PR. Plus it is so much less stressful I can now shoot 150 arrows without issue. Also now that I am not so intensely focused on getting through the clicker I am starting to work on the other areas of my form. Anyway this has helped me a lot and maybe it could help some of your other shooters. VR Ted
Thankx 🫂
Ted, Good luck with your shooting. You seem to be progressing very well. BTW I shoot a ghost ring after copying Stacey K.
Inspiring talk got to get off that a- -
You often speak of a high level of commitment required to become a high level archer. Levi Morgan once commented that nobody would out work him in preparation for ASA competitions. Thanks, Steven, for reminding archers like me that we can be better archery athletes if we put in the time and work.
How's the anti-freedomnist's movement to outlaw archery in Australia going?
That geometry has been since the X-Force debut in I think 2007? I have been shooting a 2008 X-Force HF for 16yrs. Finally upgraded to the DS33 that will be here tomorrow!! Should be much more enj to shoot, lol
Excellent
Despite watching dozens of KZread postings on shooting form, I had NEVER heard/seen the advice on relaxing the bow arm a bit to lower the shoulder and minimize (or eliminate) the string's hitting the forearm. I thought I was SUPPOSED to lock my bow arm! Thanks, as always, Steven. Chris (Maine, USA)
Average at best, hard to sharpen , takes a lot of work to get to shaving sharp . Weight isnt consistent . Yes I brought some, no I wouldnt buy them again . Agree Chinese rubbish
Which model?
@@YoureSoVane Several styles , The good stuff was hard to get so i stocked up . Its just average Chinese made quality
There's only two models available right now. Which ones did you try and how long ago was it?
There's a lot of points I see in this video but..... most shops in the US don't keep all mods. They order a select few most used and then you do a direct order from your dealer. Top hats, it's not the fastest as bowtech and elite but it's not slow as spacers... I know from doing my own work for many years on all types of bows and models. I know one thing, the top hats are SOLID with NO movement like bowtech and elite can have. It doesn't take long to change them. I do agree mods suck at times but I know their the most efficient at my length no matter what mod. Even if it's only a few fps than a rotating mod I'll take it. It keeps the draw the best at every length also. So again I'll take this for mods vs rotating mods. You don't need a new press for these limbs. They have adapters for lca presses
hi mate
Hi, Steven I just looked on AliExpress and saw Nika carbon C2 limbs 26 -42 lbs selling for $160.00 -$184.00 Canadian dollars.
Upgraded my Axcel Achieve XP to the Pro for 3 reasons: the new first axis micro adjust (so easy now to level) and the updated windage block that locks the the scope barrel and block into place. Previously I had to feel if the hole was lining up properly with the hole then tighten, now slide until it stops and lock down- Awesome. And lastly the fine tune sight gauge to get those tight in between sight marks seperate to the main adjustment. Nothing was wrong with previous version I still use it as second sight.
Spoiler Alert: It never comes out of the package!
To me, that is excellent shooting without a peep sight on a bow with a 30” axle to axle.
One of the best release i use
Need to show one attached!
Terra Firma means firm land
Good video. If you don't mind, I might be able to add to your research. I shoot both 50mm and 90mm Spider vanes: one of outdoors and one for indoors. The only time I get damage is from arrow impact from other arrows coming into the target---that can tear a vane in half. Riser contact will not damage the vanes. If you want to check for riser contact, spray foot power on the back half of the arrow and then check for marks in the power at the target. That will show you any contact the arrow may have with the bow, either on the vane or shaft. Vanes work because of lift, not drag. The surface of the vane allows the air flow past the arrow to push the arrow back inline--the further out of line, the great the force on the surface of the vane. The larger the vane, the more force acts on the arrow to correct it. Lift is a far better force than drag as it decreases as the arrow flight stabilizes--bare shaft need no vanes if tuned well. The online magazine Bow International has a good description of this titled Arrows: How to Minimize Drag and Maximize Lift. The down side of lift is in a cross wind: larger vanes are going to catch more air and be blown off course. I use my 90mm vanes indoors because they do correct the arrow flight faster and none of my ranges are particularly drafty. However, when shooting outdoors, I use the 50mm vanes so to be less influenced by cross winds. My 90mm vanes at 50m (I shoot barebow) really get blown around. I find the distance outdoors more forgiving for a bad release because there is more time for the arrow to correct with small vanes. I found this thought interesting: the former Dutch Olympic archer Sjef van den Berg would alway tune his arrows to be a little on the weak side. His rationale was that a bad shot was a weak shot, with less energy going into the arrow. He found that tuning slightly weak was a little more forgiving because the arrows would fly better on the bad shots as the arrows would still be in tune and fly well.
Thank you for the info. You seem to be knowledgeable about the subject.
Looks like a design rip of the AAE stand.
Sorry but the Elevation was out before the AAE..
It was? AAE's website says "Patent Pending"... There's gonna be a duel in the desert. I don't particularly like this design in any case (prefer the reverse clamp kind). The AAE version cracked right at the weak point.
@@brianlew9559 Only because they added a feature to the Elevation version which allows you to change the angle of top clamp portion.
Use talc or chalk dust with your spin vanes, put in a plastic bag, put the back end of the arrow with the vanes. in the bag and shake. this will coat the exposed adhesive tape which will stop adjacent arrows sticking.
2 questions, have you tried the TAC vanes? & I decided to try doing an arrow wrap with 0.06mm aluminium foil tape along the length of the shaft from point to fletching's and they look like a bare aluminium shaft no seem no creases nothing and only add around 15 grains the purpose is so the club can find them with metal detector if needed and I figured carbon arrows are less likely to bend than aluminium ones, do you see any issues?
have you tested spin wings vs plastic vanes on compound bows at 50m? would be interesting to see the difference.
For the algorithm
😂
Been using these for a while now and love them! Very stable and have yet to mar a limb.
Still hanging for super slow mo footage of arrows leaving the bow ,and the d loop coming off the release. Great content guys ,as ever 🏹😁
Think SpinWing is a registered trademark. In general, those are spin vanes.
Im in the states how do i get a pack of them im very interested in trying them
I wouldnt
Sharpened on one side is a single bevel. Harrison Pugh is down your way.... he uses a single bevel i think he builds or has something to do with the company. I dont remember the name of them.
For reference see the “ hunt life” KZread channel of a guy hunting pigs and different deer in Australia. He uses a head like the Gladius and gets pass thru hits even on huge boar hogs. He talks he’s a big fan of this design. It may be from Kyuga?
