This was a long project in the making, and I'm really happy to be able to unveil the first half. It's a culminating two-part documentary about the early 90s company Renaissance-Atlantic (responsible in-part for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) and their efforts to bring Japanese media to the west. If all had played out as intended, many of the original Bandai Japan properties would be American-made cartoons and live action adapatations!
This doc unearths new info regarding Saban Moon, Team Angel, the rumored western Dragonball adaptation, a secret feud in the localization community between Frank Ward and Funimation... and more!

Yeah, I never knew such a program existed and for neurodiverse adults, too. A lot of times people forget we exist. As a neurodivergent artist, I think I might just investigate whether I could be compatible with this program. So thank you for including that portion of the interview, Ray, and thank you Marlene for revealing the program's existence!

I had no idea The Center for Learning Unlimited existed. Speaking as someone on the spectrum who has been employed at the same company for 12 years and knowing just how hard it is for people like myself to find and stick with a job, it brings a tear to my eye to know that programs like this exist. I know it's only tangentially related to the overall video (which is wonderful, as usual) but I'm so glad that you allowed it to be spotlighted. The whole community is so thankful.

As an animation student who is on the spectrum, I barely received any help and in fact they fucked up so badly I didn't even get to do all my courses, so I don't actually know how to use the program I have a degree in and have spent the past five years slowly teaching MYSELF.

Considering how poorly they market modern Sailor Moon outside of Japan i.e. Cosmos, I can't believe I'm typing this: THANK GOD FOR TOEI. Thank god they didn't allow the Americans to butcher the masterpiece that is the original Sailor Moon. I would never fallen in love with the characters, the show or anime itself if it was turned into a Power Rangers type abomination. Thank you Ray Mona for showing us this "What If?". I am truly grateful.

I feel so conflicted - like, you feel for all the people who worked on these projects that never got seen, but if their projects hadn't failed to get produced, anime as a style would likely not have made the leap to Western markets. How many Western shows have since been inspired by Sailor Moon? I feel like Toei was right to defend its animation, but I also understand Ward was trying to make something more universally appealing. In a way, he was right: Sailor Moon didn't quite reach the heights of Power Rangers in terms of U.S. marketability. But that style of animation made a lasting impact that never would have happened if Saban Moon had gone through.

You said it- I can get why he'd be frustrated that he missed out on what would've assuredly been a very lucrative opportunity with the "live-actionification" of all those anime, and he is right that it undoubtedly WOULD have earned them a lot to Americanize them.... but man, am I glad that not ALL of the old anime I loved were Saban'd into various levels of Power Rangers copies. Though I'm kind of wondering if the Namco Bandai execs would have wanted to take the option that would've made them the most money, or if they genuinely like their own media and respects it's uniqueness to the point that they're fine with having lost out on that money in exchange for a world where anime is just allowed to be anime.

Ok, I just watched it, and that was SO interesting. Definitely they used some of their canned Dragon Ball ideas on that martial arts show, absolutely. Needless to say I'm happy that Frank failed in his attempt to convert all these properties into a north american sub-genre of media, because it would've been in detriment to the anime industry. But I do respect his passion and ambition. Clearly a man who wanted to push the industry forward. Loved the interview with Cecilia, and OMG those Team Angels dolls and sketches 🩷. Absolutely an amazing, fun, interesting watch for us nerds, as usual 💖.

God I cannot WAIT for the follow-up where this old man feud properly explodes. Like, do I PREFER the world that Japan Inc created, where anime remain anime instead of getting the Saban-treatment and become americanized cartoon / live-action shows? Absolutely. But I can also understand his frustration at having their pride make them pass up a very lucrative opportunity, for at that time I have no doubt that his business wisdom WAS right- if these shows had become Americanized the audience of that time would have bought them in far larger amounts. But they stuck to their guns, and the shows of yesteryear didn't become the moneymakers they could've, BUT they became far more beloved BECAUSE they weren't what you'd get from the US market at the time and inspired so many others. Japan got a WHOLE lot of soft power because of that on the worldwide stage instead of just becoming something mined by the US for them to make domestic products, and I hope the world is at least a little better because of it. I get that he's completely apart from the world of anime fandom, but I do onwder what his thoughts would be should he see the effects that Japan sticking to their guns have had on fandom in the US. Wistful that he missed out, or realizing that maybe the guys on the other side had a point? Who knows... Still totally here for the SMACKDOWN between these grouchy cartoon grandpa's though. Steel chairs, baby! I want to see steel-chairs!

@@PIKMINROCK1 Toei was the reason 4Kids got One Piece after all. But I'd personally be ticked if me and my company tried to get the license for something only for it to go to a lazier cheaper company, no matter who's fault it was. And the "if I had a nickel for every time, I'd have two nickles" wouldn't exactly help the the situation, the fact DIC was so blah about both series would really honk me off. And even then, DIC's Sailor Moon at least opened the door to another company getting the dubbing rights to the rest of the series and managed to get it a better distribution stream. Knights of the Zodiac died with a bad dub, and a way too late release.

this series is great Thanks Ray. Can't wait for the next part i sense a can of worms i can see in the making. All these shows Renaissance/frank ward to try their best to bring Anime over with a market level of sense so Anime can do well is pretty well documented but failed cause how Anime would be seen as weird or not accepted. There were network normals people who made cartoons had to follow. an Old way of thinking really of how to market to kids. I can see a smell the feud with Gen a mile given that Funimation went rogue with American normals of selling products but adapting the anime he licensed would hear to and represent t he janapese culture with Uncuts and went head first into just adapting the works and a man like Frank was doing everything in his power to try like Saban to market using TV, Funimation relayed on DVD sale, word of mouth, made the DVDs themselves and as you can see later with DBZ pull away from working with Saban and becoming a dominant force in anime Adaptation while other companies try to stay within the lines of adapting more for TV American standards. They did their best and Slowly others followed you see it now with Digimon and while it was beautifully dubbed it was still had a lot of American censorship but still was able to make an nostalgic dub. Now the series trying to continue and that norms are different and we have streaming services. Now anime is more access cause of streaming services that break the TV syndication norms. Frank ward tried his best while Gen sailed west to Keep things original but cutting the middle man in the process as in toy sales for the western audience. Anyways keep it going thank you~

Your work is fantastic and I really appreciate it, but I would like to point out that Shuki Levy has a... rather sordid history of taking credit for the work of others. Like Power Rangers, all of that music was the work of composer Ron Wasserman.

Oh my goodness thank you for reminding me!! I had interviewed Ron Wasserman in a previous episode and forgot to credit him also as a composer this time around 😅😅 i was unaware of that other bit you had mentioned though, so thank you!

@@RayMona No problem at all. This happened a LOT with Saban productions and I just wanna get that info out there. Little tip if you ever find yourself looking into this stuff, typically for Saban productions the actual composer will be credited for something like "music production." For example on the parts of Ocean DBZ Saban had a hand in Shuki Levy and Haim Saban, under an alias, are listed as composers. But under "music production" you'll find Wasserman, who was also the actual composer there, and Jeremy Sweet (singer of Rock the Dragon, also did the Beetleborgs theme.) Crazy stuff, I know.

@@abbynormal2419 Shuki Levy and Haim Saban also did the theme song for an early Filmation show based on Jerry Lewis Skits. Their music label (which would birth a dubbing and branding empire) also distributed a ton of French anime dub intros too.

Your videos are such a major event whenever they drop. Very much hyped for this one! And also, I recall that the Toon Makers Sailor Moon videos were in part a reason behind me actually checking out the original anime around that time, as I was in between being a bit too young and out of its, let's say, target demographic to get to watch it back in the day, causing it to fly under my radar for a while. And now I get why its such a beloved classic as it was a pretty good show all around. I kinda wonder why I haven't watched it sooner considering that I did watch Powerpuff Girls and Totally Spies quite often as a kid, and the character designs of Sailor Moon did catch my attention beforehand (especially Sailor Venus and Sailor Jupiter, who fittingly did end up becoming my favorites when watching the show) but better late than never. Though I'll now also wonder if the proposed US anime remakes did end up being made into full series and, most intriguingly, how those might've fared in other markets that did embrace anime a bit earlier such as Europe and Latin America (where I come from). Could the westernized versions made it to those foreign markets too or international distributors would've just brought the Japanese originals instead? And how those might've affected newer shows from the next decades' overseas releases? Who knows... And sure, a few shows like Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh and other 4kids productions did get their US dubs/adaptations distributed in a worldwide scale, leaving behind the uncut JP originals, but I think those were the exception rather than the rule. And the core footage was still from the originals instead of a full remake anyways. Overall, the US at large seems to have been a tiny bit late with most 80s and 90s series that became worldwide hits, which for example resulted in Saint Seiya sadly flopping there or Dragon Ball only really taking off a bit later than the rest of the world, but they surely caught up big time in the 2000s onwards thanks to major things like Toonami and the rise of the Internet at large.
