Also just a note: I know Mexico is part of North America (though I see some argue that its not) but when I say, Latin American, South American and Spanish Speaking Countries, Mexico is 100% a part of that since its a spanish speaking country, while I just said North America to specifically refer to the United States and Canada so the concept could be better understood, since repeating Canada and USA was beginning to get wordy and confusing. But if you listen, i say "Spanish speaking countries", so Mexico is included 😅 I hope that clears things up (or maybe its more confusing, im sleepy) Contact/Press: info@raymona.net WAYS TO SUPPORT THE SHOW! kzread.info Subscribe! twitter.com/theraymona Follow! instagram.com/theraymona Follow! www.patreon.com/RayMona Donate to Join our discord server!! ko-fi.com/raymona www.raymona.net/ Guardians of the Cosmos official Lyrics: archive.org/details/guardians-of-the-cosmos-lyrics

Personally speaking I don't think the English dub was bad at all despite the awkward voice-acting, I was surprised by how much fighting was kept in and unlike the Sailor Moon dub this one didn't try to hide that it took place in Japan and most of the original names were kept. Some of the changes arguably were more effective, like with Ikki on the Island of Doom, i liked the idea of Guilty's daughter(I think her name was Esmerelda? can't recall)instead of being killed by her father being disturbed by what Ikki had become and running away from him after eliminating Guilty.

also those "abysmal ratings" of Knights of the Zodiac were Cartoon Network's own fault because instead of airing the show on Toonami like they did with Sailor Moon(which arguably was single-handedly responsible for kickstarting the late 90s and early 2000s anime boom in the U.S. with how popular it was on CN)they aired it on their very short-lived and i'll-advised SVES(Saturday Video Entertainment System) block(which barely lasted a year) where it didn't really fit in with anything else on the block so unsurprisingly it's ratings weren't great and CN then made things worse by suddenly deciding to banish the show to airing new episodes at 12:30 at night. Another part of the problem was the show's age, they could add in all the fancy CGI transitions they wanted but there was no disguising the age of the original animation and with KOTZ being the oldest show on the block it really stuck like a sore thumb. As someone who was active on those uncut anime fansites in the 2000s I can tell you the sales of the uncut ADV dub were pretty poor, they outsold the ADV Kids releases of the DiC dub but not by a whole lot, personally I think the DiC is better as at least their VAs seem to be enjoying themselves whereas the ADV cast seem to be bored and reading off cue-cards the whole time, with the poor quality of the uncut dub and average reviews i'm not one bit surprised ADV took a totally different approach to dubbing Ghost Stories a couple of years later by making a rather forgettable anime into an irreverent and hilarious gag dub. Thank you for mentioning me in your video(i'm darkrage6 the guy that uploaded Evil Apparitions), it's a huge honor. Preserving this dub is something i'm passionate about and I was pretty lucky to be able to get some of those DVDs off Ebay as they can be pricey(especially volume 3 Out of The Arena which I was lucky to get for 20 bucks and Volume 7 Battle for the Ages which cost me about 100 bucks). There was also a very short-lived trading card game based on the dub(this was back when everyone was trying to be the next Yugioh, I remember commercials for the Harry Potter TCG and Spongebob had a TCG in the early 2000s as well) I received a card from one of the DVDs I got off Ebay and showed off a picture of it on the Seiya sub-reddit and there was quite a bit of surprise.

@@bluebaron6858 I think so, but YTV wasn't going to be enough to carry the dub, if a dub did badly on Cartoon Network it was pretty much sunk at the time. It's not like now where Yugioh Vrains could get an english dub supported by Teletoon long before it aired in the USA. I think KOTZ could've at least been a decent hit if it had aired on Toonami alongside other respected anime like DBZ, Outlaw Star or Tenchi Muyo, but nobody was going to watch it on a rinky-dink block like SVES, the fact that it paled in comparison to shows on there like Batman the Animated Series didn't do it any favors.

Yeah, this show was HUGE in Mexico back in the day. I remember watching stuff like Robotech and Mazinger or Voltron as a kid in the 80's and loving that the storytelling was more complex and not episodic and childish like American cartoons of the day, but then in the early 90's Knights of the Zodiac started being broadcast and it was a game changer. It literally lay the foundation for stuff like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball, and anime in general, to become successful in the mainstream.
Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya even share animation cels - the shattering ground from the first Saint Seiya opening was reused in Sailor Moon as shattering ice when Usagi was fighting Queen Beryl.
I'm Belgian. France was the very first country to air Saint Seiya outside Japan. Because we have access to french channels in Belgium, I grew up with it. Saint Seiya was huge at that time like nothing else before in Europe. When I start traveling around the world, I could see how Saint Seiya is still very popular almost everywhere, likes in China, but in north america. Your video will be a good start to then to explain what it is and why it failed there. Saint Seiya has a such impact on anime, manga, video games like Legend of Zelda. Saint Seiya it's still so huge in Europe, a french comics about it just came out weeks ago. Many thanks for your works. I'm looking for part 2.

Costa Rican here! To say Saint Seiya put a mark on our hearts will be a understatement. Not only the narrative of the story, the character development and OST - I still play the OST every now and then while doing my job and still getting emotional out of the sheer epicness of it🥲- was something never saw at the time but also the core values each Saint were driven for. Honor, loyalty and friendship were something a lot of us learned through this anime and it is something not a few people who grew watching it shares in common. I remember a lot of us chatting and yearning to become a Saint of Athena as kids. Edit: You got a new subscriber as I'm looking forward for Part 2!
It's amazing how far you've managed to go with all this research on a missing pilot. Even if the pilot is still currently missing, this is still a huge deal because it unveils more information about the Saint Seiya adaptation that never was. Looking forward to, Part 2!
I'm Brazilian and I lived the effervescence of the anime Cavaleiros do Zodíaco and followed the repercussions it had in several possible aspects. For a long time I questioned myself why the anime was not successful in the USA, now I can understand very well why. In Brazil, the anime still has a very active fanbase. Your work is sensational, patience and perseverance worthy of a Seiya (☺️). I sincerely hope we still have that 15-minute pilot. Thanks for bringing this up.

We loved watching this that we would would sing the opening songs a lot in the car, or when we were bored. To this day we go back and watch this show just because we want to relive our childhood. And we also saw shows like Inuyasha, The Vision of Escaflowne and The Red Barron in Spanish as well and just like a lot of people from Spanish speaking countries in the America's we calim a lot of these animes because we didn't have much cartoons to watch so anime was our cartoons for us growing up.

Dang, this truly is the year of lost media being found .
Amazing work, here we are the Saint Seiya Fans supporting you channel.. Thank you very much for your effort.
A few months ago a cousin who came yo visit from the U.S. (i live in México). asked if Saint Seiya was good. We talked about the series, the themes of it, movies, games, etc. I showed him My collection, he was impresed by the fact i Still kept the old action figures from the early 90's. So he decides to give Saint Seiya a try.
I find it very interesting that the Gold Saints in the Guardians of the Cosmos intro look EXACTLY like the action figures sold all around the world back in the day! Surely the point of this cartoon was to push the same action figures into the US market! This also explains the use of the newer Bronze Cloths for the protagonists, which were the action figures they had available at the time.
As you should have noticed, we brazilians are hardcore fans of Saint Seiya, the show is very popular here. And well, this is one of the most incredible videos I ever watched concerning this subject. I am very surprised and impressed with your investigation and determination. Thank you for creating such amazing content.

Wow!!! Been a fan of Saint Saiya, known as Caballeros del Zodiaco. What a fantastic documentary. Wow, I'm speechless. Incredible work. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I've been a fan of this franchise since 1994, when it aired in Mexico. I was only 4 years old, but for some reason, maybe the VHS, toys, and multiple merchandise made me fall in love with anime. This series is so close to my heart, this was an incredible discovery. I saw this clip on Twitter and other saint Seiya creators told us to watch this documentary. What could have been of saint Seiya in the US. When I turn 13, I moved to the USA, and what was my surprise when I saw the knights of the zodiac action figures at target. Made my dad bought me seiya, figure that I still have. Excited about the movie, anyways. Thank you for sharing your findings and for never giving up. You truly found gold!! 🔥🙌🏼 Best vibes, and blessing. Waiting on part two. ✌🏼

I'm Brazilian and I have a Saint Seiya tattoo on my right arm. I didn't do it when I was 14, when the series premiered here, I did it when I was 34, to keep forever the memory of the anime that saved my life when I was bullied for being autistic and trans (even without knowing it at the time). All I thought about was killing myself, until this wonderful door opened and I was able to escape suffering and even make friends. Even the name I chose was influenced by the series. I will never be grateful enough, but I will strive until my last day to be as noble and kind as this anime taught me a man should be.

The answer why Knights of the Zodiac are so popular in Brazil are a series of factors, Brazilians love Japanese series, it was different from anything that had gone before, the outstanding script and soundtrack, and we didn't have many options.
I grew up with Saint Seiya but I’m 13 now..I always loved old school because I find it better
That moment when you try to find one Americanized version of a Japanese show, only to find a different Americanized version of that same Japanese show. Whatever you get out of this, it's gonna be interesting, at any rate.
This was so lost media what I didn't even knew something like this existed at all lmao
That reveal at the end was INCREDIBLE!! I did NOT see that coming and I can only imagine how absolutely mind-blowing it must have been for you
Great job on the research and documentary :) There is another Saint Seiya lost media regarded as a holy grail by the community for the few that are aware of it. At a French convention in 1995, upon seeing a fan made trailer by Jérôme Alquié for the Hades arc, the late Shingo Araki (lead artist of the Saint Seiya anime) mentioned there is actually an existing trailer that was shown internally at Toei Animation at the time for the Hades Chapter, the last part of the manga. Chances are it was just existing footage pieced together but still. The production for that arc was cancelled due to declining rating before finally being adapted a decade later. Yet, fans still wonder to this day how that arc could have looked pre digital era and that answer might lie in that lost trailer.
This was a gigantic professional piece of work. As an all life fan of this outstanding manga/anime, thank you. In my country, Argentina, we met Saint Seiya ("Los Caballeros del Zodiaco"), arrived at first trough brazilian channel "Rede Manchete", and later trough local channels "ATC" and "Magic Kids" (an argentine 24 hours kids content channel, like Cartoon Network). It was ground breaking, had a huge both commercial and culture impact. People of all ages talking about it. Even the animated OVAs and movies where premiered in cinemas and later in VHS. Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya where like the Holy Trinity of anime for us. They opened the gates for a whole wave of anime during 90's and 2000's.

I was 6 years old! the series was a cultural and mass phenomenon. There were no cuts to the violence or blood, the drawing was displayed completely UNCUT! Crazy isn't it? Our mothers fought in stores to buy anime toys! hahahahaha! In your documentary, we saw how disastrous the dubbing was. Here the Brazilian dubbing was the highlight. Due to the wonderful work of the voice actors in Saint Seiya, voice acting has become something that is greatly admired and appreciated! It was the same voice actors for almost 30 years! Saint Seiya still remains strong in the hearts of Brazilians! There are many stories that Saint Seiya has given us!
Saint Seiya walked in the footsteps of Fist of the North Star (Hokuto no Ken) two great series that maked generations and i still think HNK deserves more attention from West
I’m a UK English speaking person, I loved Saint Seiya I know a lot of people are not a fan of the series for reasons but at least I’m one of those people who loves it. Both the manga and the anime of this series. I viewed it as an inspirational anime of the 80s and my favourite 80s Shonen anime of all time.
Yes it's sad that Saint Seiya was treated so badly in North America. Ah that last clip you show us is so cool :) Hope to see second part soon :)
I'm so early that it's only in 360p... 😳 Looking forward to digging in!
I'm halfway through the video. I had to pause it. with literally tears on my eyes. I'm latino and a hard SAINT SEIYA fan. and till this date. it breaks my heart just seeing how this anime didn't get treat properly in North America 💔 it's a cult in the rest of the world. We can just imagine how even bigger SAINT SEIYA would be now in days if this wouldn't have been the case in the US and Canada. it would definitely be bigger than Dragon Ball. I thank you for making this video. thank you!

You can thank Cartoon Network for that, honestly I don't think the dub was that bad. CN totally squandered what they had by choosing to air the dub on their new not-very-good and short-lived entertainment block called SVES(Saturday Video Entertainment System) instead of Toonami(which was where other English dubs like Sailor Moon and DBZ had gotten immense ratings)and KOTZ stuck out like a sore thumb next to everything else on the block(as it was the oldest show on there)and didn't really fit in(as it mostly aired alongside western cartoons like Batman the animated series), and it when CN moved it to late nights at 12:30 it clashed badly alongside the uncut dubs of other anime that it was airing after like Witch Hunter Robin. If CN had just put the damn thing on Toonami it could've had at least a modicum of success.

@@jacksonteller3973 Na, they took out Seiji Yokoyama's OST, that's one thing that doesn't fly.
Great job releasing this on Seiyas birthday There's a lot of mention of Power Rangers in this episode, would you consider doing an episode on lost media from that, like say the original Bioman pilot?
As a lifelong Saint Seiya fan from Mexico, I just want you to know that your work is excepcional and I can’t wait for part 2! It’s always a good day to learn something new or secret about Saint Seiya!
You're like a detective and your tenacity is inspirational.
About the success of SS KoZ in Latin America. This show is imprinted in me, my first memories of television is with this show. I Grew up wishing to have the expensive toys of the show. One day, the kids were playing soccer at the street, a woman threw the saint seya toys of her kids into the street and ran with her car over those expensive action figures, she had just been converted a Jehovah's Witness. It was such a traumatic experience, lol. It was '98 I was four years old
I remember Saint Seiya being marketed as Knights of the Zodiac... I wish I'd gotten into it when I was younger

I actually think KOTZ is a better title then SS, because the series is about more than just Seiya so putting him alone in the title feels like it kinda does a disservice to the other Knights IMO.

Those last seconds were mind-blowing!!! Congratulations!
Una verdadera arqueóloga y detective. Me he quedado pegado con este documental y estoy pendiente de su segunda parte. Ray Mona, verdaderamente posees el Séptimo Sentido.
Saint Seiya is an absolute Masterpiece! Huge fan of the mangas, animes and myth cloths over here! Thanks Ray mona for your dedication! The latín american community is blown away right now, you are trending
You did an amazing job on the Toon Makers Sailor Moon documentary and I'm so excited for what you are bringing into my life!!! Thank you so much for all that you do!
Looks Saint Seiya & Sailor Moon are more alike in some prospects than most of us thought.
This video is worth every single minute. The end really surprised me. Can't wait for part 2.
I'm in love with your channel! You're a great storyteller, I was completely hooked! 90s-born brazilian and Saint Seiya fan since childhood ~ it's a shame americans could not engage with this beloved series at the time, but it's never too late!

HOLY F$%&! I didn't know about Guardians of the Cosmos... You have my attention. Saint Seiya was one of the first anime I've ever watched, back in the early 90's when it was broadcasted in Argentina. This video is really awesome!
Okay, I came out of this more psyched for part 2....what a journey...
While I only watched Saint Seiya up until the Asgard arc back then despite being from Latin America, I'm still very much aware of how big that show is there (as well as Europe), its status as one of the first international anime hits and it not clicking in North America in comparison. So kudos for this video and the extra subtitle options. A fun fact that I do recall vividly about Saint Seiya's LATAM Spanish dub is the voice actor overlap with other classic anime. Such as both Seiya and Shiryu sharing the same VA with Yamcha (the former voices him in the first 60 episodes and the latter took over halfway through the Red Ribbon Arc onwards. Each instead became their own knights here), Hyoga with Vegeta and, as a cool connection with the previous TOTL videos, Athena with Minako / Sailor Venus. Saint Seiya is so iconic here that we typically get almost any spinoff, game or movie that gets released.

@@Tomatrix He means for the Latin America dubbing actors's crew. In the Dragon Ball dub both Jesus Barrero (Seiya) and Ricardo Mendoza (Shiryu) voiced Yamcha, and René García (Hyoga) voiced Vegeta. Until this day even after three decades and despite having many other succesful and important characters dubbing animes, the dubbing crew are still recognized by the characters on Saint Seiya as they're most important work, ever.

This was an amazing documentary. The lost media At the end blew my mind and I’m sure it took the SS community by surprise. Cannot wait for the next part
You're leaving us on a cliffhanger?!?!?
I have watched with utmost interest your previous documentaries about Saban Moon as it, along with Saint Seiya (Caballeros del Zodiaco here), were the series I most watched in the early 90's here in latam. But Saint Seiya is closer to my heart as I've been on this fandom for over 30 years. When you mentioned that if not for the american fans of Sailor Moon pressuring to get the original animation completely released, you would have gotten instead a reimagined version in the form of the live action adaptation Team Angel, I saw so many parallels to what happened to Saint Seiya with the butchered version you got, and the pilot of Startorm that we knew Kurumada didn't find faithful to the source. Sadly as you mention it here, the uncaring treatment this great anime got killed any form of american success as it should have been: it's themes are universal and can resonate with anyone. Thank you very much for such amazing periodistic effort uncovering the ins and outs of the approaches to japanese media of the american entertainment of that time, I'll be eagerly waiting for the next part.
Really interesting documentary, thank you from Italy! Just a small side-note: in the original manga all Saints are half-brothers and children of Mitsumasa, but in the original anime this was changed and any reference to it was cut. This is one of many differences between the original anime and manga made partially because of different target audiences and partially due to the unusually short time between the release of the manga and the beginning of the anime adaptation.
When the pilot popped into my feedback in Facebook I immediately suspected your channel had something to do with it and it somehow made me squeak in joy! It has always intrigued me how little popularity Saint Seiya has had in the USA while it is hugely popular in Latin American countries. My father used to watch it during his teen/young adult years and he introduced me to the anime (and the sort of cringy op made in Spain, lol) Your research for lost media always manages to amaze me, great work!
Well that's a cliffhanger. It's crazy to see shit like that and know its not some modern mockup or pastiche of what such a show could have looked like. It's the real deal that's been in a dustbin for decade. Wild.
Super awesome, great job! Thanks for the cameo 🤭 17:00
