Appreciation shd be done as per time/ era..eg KL Saigal sahib was considered one of the best during those days of 40s.Even Rafi sahib was keen to sing with him..same is case of KL De & jorabai,kanan devi..Lata ji came later & became the best..when we talk about suraiya,in fact we are talking of that time..Noor jehan is another example where even Lataji became her fan & sehgal's fan..

Vaah vaah,Sharmaji.I am very much happy to enjoy such a classic presentation.Suraiyaji is my favourite singer.Thank you, sir ji.

Suraiya is not an underrated singer or actor. She herself went into oblivion. She will always be number one singer who acted equally excellently... it is difficult to describe her voice ... A talent of.Punjab.

Thank you Peeyushji for your excellent comments on the Songs of Suraiya. Suraiya! I had not heard her name at any time in my younger days. I knew only Lata. In the late 1980s, I bought a cassette on the songs of Suraiya. I decided to listen to it. I heard a few songs. It was only later that I realized there was something unusual about the songs of Suraiya. The more I listened, the more I wanted to listen to her songs. Now, after listening to almost all her songs, I have this to say. Her voice is full of life and feelings and it penetrates our hearts. Some of her songs bubble with life and others can bring tears to our eyes. When you listen to Suraiya, even the weather changes its mood. The lyricists and the musicians were geniuses in their right. Their compositions were masterpieces. Best of all they had the most beautiful voice to sing those songs. The sweetness of honey and nectar, the softness of the breeze, freshness of the morning and the laughter of the birds fill the songs of Suraiya. To match her songs, was her exquisitely beautiful face. Her beauty was stunning. She was extraordinarily beautiful and she possessed a voice that could melt the heart. No wonder she was the most beautiful with the sweetest voice. More than anything, she was one of the kindest persons in the world. Her good deeds are legends. She called her home ''Krishna Mahal''. Now who can beat that.

वाह, वाह क्या बात है शर्मा जी वास्तव में बचपन की यादें ताज़ा कर दी। इन गानों के समय मेरी किशोर अवस्था थी। उस समय हमारे समाज में आपसी भाईचारा, परस्पर सौहार्द, संस्कृति व संस्कार उच्च और आदर्श रूप में थे। संगीतकार कड़ी मेहनत से संगीत तैयार करते थे। कहीं भी जाति पाति का भेदभाव व संकीर्णता भरे विचार थे। आज न वो कर्णप्रिय संगीत रहा न ही वो शालीनता से भरा माहौल। सुरैया जी के इतना मनमोहक गीतों का संग्रह प्रस्तुत करने पर हार्दिक धन्यवाद।

I got a chance to watch 1948 ChitraLekha - Music was awesome. Thank You, Sharmaji - For putting this post for old music lovers I heard Surayia in 1947'Anmol Gadi. What a difference a year or two makes (in her voice) from songs in the playlist from your post. Also she was put against much senior Noorjahan gems in that movie too -:)

Emotions seem to be getting better of reason. Indeed large number of old songs are incredibly melodious. Most of these were composed in late fifties sixties, and early 70s. Thereafter fewer great songs emerged. Among old, there were dud songs also. Thank Suraiya for contributing to those. No wonder with the advent of geniuses like Lata, Asha and some other superb voices, she disappeared like a drop of water on hot pan.

आप कमाल की वो बातें बताते हैं जो आजकल की जनरेशन की समझ से बाहर है। पंडित हुसन लाल जी को मैं १९६६ में मिला जब वो अम्रतसर आए थे , उन्होंने राग जोग कौस गाकर इतना बढ़िया सुनाया जिसके सुर आजतक मेरे कानो में गूंजते हैं। पूरा कमरा उनकी आवाज की गमक और तानों से गूंज उठा था। ऐसे महान संगीतकार बार बार जन्म नहीं लेते। उनका काम रहती दुनिया तक अमर है। आपने जो जो कहा १०० प्रतिशत सही कहा है। उनकी धुनों की नकले होती रही, यह हमने भी देखा। फिल्म आंसू, अफसाना, काफिला, छोटी भाभी, अदलेजहागीर, चांद, अप्सरा, मीना बाजार, शगुन, आधी रात, प्यार की मंजिल, आदि अनेक फिल्मों के गीत बहुत लाजवाब है।

Perhaps H B did not have a finger on the pulse of the masses. Can't expect an average cinema goer to have knowledge of classical music..

Finger on the pulse was very much there as they had massive hits from 1946 onward. They also did not stick to pure classical. They were giving music that was mix of Punjabi folk plus classical

talking about chemistry -What about self chemistry. By that I meant when actor playing their own sung song on the screen. e.g. NoorJahan in Anmol Gadi , and Surinder also in Anmol Gadi and many others like Kishore Kumar so many items picturised on him - That's whole different ball game -:)

I have not seen any heroine as beautiful as Suraiya! My only and only heroine whom I have been seeing and listening since 1949. She was an enigma and so also the mesmerising music of Husnlal Bhagatram. You should have included Naushad or better take one more episode with Naushad's music.

HusnLal Bhagat Ram was a name of its time / era with popularity level ,same as later music directors like SJ,OP Nayyar,SD Burman sahib..No doubt that Badi Behan & Shama Parwana were examples of HB hits..🎉🎉

Some of these compositions look like they are in the Naushad mould. The use of dholak beat, is purely Naushadian. It's surprising that you are giving the credit to Husnlal-Bhagatram instead of Naushad. This is like distorting history. Shama Parwana is one of my most favorite albums. Beqarar Hain Koyee is one of my most favorite duets. I think all the Udan Kha Thola songs were not supposed to be sung by Lata. Something happened behind the scene. Mera Salam Le Ja was released earlier which might have affected Husnlal-Bhagatram a lot. Looking forward to listening to a presentation on Naushad-Suraiya.

surely your views. I can not be biased. Naushad never had Punjabi ang in dholak or tabla. Only when Ghulam Mohammed joined him, Naushad got the Rajasthani ang that he had learnt under Khemchand Prakash, but not executed. His beat in Rattan was aped after Master Ghulam Haider. Husnlal Bhagatram took nothing from Naushad, they were masters in their own right, titled Pundit (which Naushad was never considered)

Yet another joke. Suraiya was less than average singer who got chances to sing since she was a star. With the advent of geniuses like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle etc., she disappeared like a drop of water on hot pan. Enjoy nostalgia but understand quality. You can also enjoy "Highlighted" tag since you are echoing the originator's viewpoint.
