Did You Know About This Super Rare 80s Radio Keyboard? | Casio CK-10

Casio CK-10 is a radio edition of the Casio PT-1 which is in turn a lamer version of the Casio VL-1. Did you know? Cool. I open it, bend it, play it, but do I break it? Who knows. I do! Will make a sample pack of all the bent sounds soon also :D So that will be fun!

Simon, if you make it playable with the radio, you could then play along with the mic from the previous video, and other FM transmitting devices.

If it's a 3 way toggle switch to go from Off/Keyboard/Radio it might just be send power to only ONE of those two options. Could be as easy as adding separat epower switches for each mode? Perhaps a blending circuit for the speaker so it doesn't overdrive the speaker? But I'm not much of a circuit bender. haha.

This is so close to my dream! I feel like the Casio MT-600 preset keyboard could be modded into the HT-700 synthesizer, or a better version. They MUST be identical inside, other than the programmer board! THEY MUST BE!!!! I'd gladly donate one of each keyboard if the Magpie shares interest in this quest. Just saying.

Ooh yeah they look so alike on pictures! Gonna check the 8bitguy video on the ht-700. I have personally avoided most of these “bigger” casios simply out of studio space 😆 but that would be a fascinating quest indeed! Hook up on discord maybe?

I don't know if it would be possible to add the programming jog wheel to an MT600 to make it into an HT700, plus you really must have the display to know what parameters you are changing. However, the MT600 DOES have the resonant analogue filter onboard and it is possible to tap into it and add external controls. Search for "modified MT600" by a channel called Rolandsh1000 (or something similar). The chap added some great mods to his MT600, and he also extensively modified his HT700 with some very impressive mods.

Heyyyy pal if you add a low power transmitter forked from the synth output (theres a million kits and assembled circuits out there to make it a permanent part of the instrument), you should be able to make a feedback loop with a send/return jack for added effects. A slow-modulated delay fed into the slightly mis-tuned radio could create magic. Add pitch shifter and it’s fractal magic. As usual, your end results here blew me away for having started with so little!

@@SimonTheMagpie yeah I’ve patched up radio feedback separately with both consumer FM transmitters and an old eico lab tube signal generator, and then receiver of choice through effects and sometimes an amp for stacking speaker-mic feedback too for making perverse drones. for a mono lofi instrument like the casio, i would guess that the simplest discrete transistor-based transmitter circuit might sound better when overloaded than one that uses IC’s etc and also might have more fun frequency drift, but i haven’t tested the theories out yet.

One possible gotcha in comparing the CK-10 to the VL-1 is that, if the chips are like a microcontroller of some sort, they might have different firmware. So doing the same thing electronically on one might not result in the same results.

I think they will be good for helping me control my breathing for singing or whatever that sound is that comes out when I open my mouth. Thanks for the inspirational videos! :D

I kept my original VL-1 as is (including its nifty little cream carrying case but all my other early casiotone range synths (seven of them as of today's count) have gone through the devilish S-Cat circuit bend treatment. As long as there's room for pots, switches and knobs, there's ibviousliy tons of possibilities ahead. On a practical side, the easiest way is to get rid of the audio amp and lourspeaker(s) to free some more space inside the casing.

I love all the quirky other variations of the VL-1, but could never understand why Casio removed features from the VL-1 when making them. They could have made a Super VL-1 with the CK-10 built in radio, plus added the VL-5's polyphony! Simon, maybe you can build the Super VL-1/ CK-10/ VL-5 that Casio should've offered back in 1981!

I've had a casio in my childhood which was clearly with same engine (monophonic, 4 voices) with 2 speakers, like CK 10, but had also some melodies built in. But of course my memory could be broken. I see that "CK" stands for the series with built in radios and sometimes cassettes.
