The CRAZIEST Casio You've Never Heard Of

Музыка

Checking out the Casio VA-10. A one of a kind little lofi adventure machine that seems to have gone almost completely under the radar. Which is go bad cause otherwise they might have made a VA-20 and that would have been cool.

    Oh man, I remember reading a review of this guy on TableHooters. According to them, it's got a "1-band vocoder", as in just...a volume envelope follower? And that SOUNDS worthless but if you run some drums or even just like a 909 rimshot into that thing you've got a synth trigger like the oldschool house producers used! 90s Casio was an absolute blessing to the world, making stuff nobody asked for that nothing else will ever compare with.

    It's true: I have never heard of this. Effects and vocoder in a toy is crazy. I'd love to see what the pitch-follower thing does when it's fed into itself. The whole thing seems ripe for bending.

  • @thatawfulsound

    You can route the effects through themselves but the pitch follower won't do anything if you feed it back through itself. That is, it wont't play itself, but you could probably figure out a workaround with a mixer

    Hi dude, do you have any suggestions as to which Casio keyboards are worth buying in the sense of them being usable for sound design? I collect Yamaha toy keyboards for example, but only the ones with FM synthesis or other "unique" capablilties (e.g. Yamaha PSR-36, Yamaha VSS-200 etc.). Thanks

    @@frusci4an1e The Yamaha PSR-36 is one of my favourites. I also really like the PSS-480. As for Casio keyboards, the SK-1 is a cheap-n-cheerful little sampler. Very basic but has it's own unique sound. I retro-fit mine with a MIDI kit so I can sequence it. The CZ-101 is probably the most famous and "professional" of all the small Casios. It's become a bit pricey but it's a true synthesizer in every respect. It uses Phase Distortion synthesis which is similar to FM but different. More crunchy and gritty as opposed to FM's bright, bell-like tones. Most of the early MT line of Casio keyboards have some unique features. The "super drums" line have velocity sensitive drum pads and can be controlled by "sound sticks" which separate velocity sensitive drum sticks you can air-drum with. Of course the little VL-1 / VL-tone is also a true synthesizer with a very unique sound. The FZ, VZ, MT CZ and SK CASIO keyboards are all worth a look. Also, take a look at 8-BIT Keys' channel. He used to review and demo all of these old Casio and Yamaha machines. kzread.info

    Wow! The tracking of the mic is super nice and really unique as a feature for a toy. Super cool. The fx are also great. It's a perfect tool for your music for sure! Also the synth sounds are so nice, I have a couple of those toys with the same sounds and they are so cheesy but also really interesting for that exact cheesyness. Perfect for the music you do!

    I actually remember this as I was looking for a low priced keyboard with FX and a vocoder. The VA -10 showed up but the price of it was loads more than Reason 2.5 (back in 2002), and Reason's vocoder had quite a few multi-band settings, so I got Reason. I still wondered about the VA-10 tho. Show us more of it, Simon. 👍

    There's a "serious" version of that toy, made by Roland. It's called JD-Xi. Roughly same size, vocoder, analog synth, digital synth, all the famous TR-drum machines, Sequencer, Guitar input, filters etc. The main difference - it's not LoFi. ;) And has a lot more twistyknobs.

  • @keyhoarder

    @keyhoarder

    It's not. There are totally different species. I've had both Roland JD XI and Casio VA-10. Casio is not pro, it's not multitimbral, it's not analog, not velocity sensitive, don't have any menus, sequencer, any knobs. Even the keys are different in both size and quantity and Roland don't have speakers and it's not battery operated.
