Blue had an Eevee that did eventually evolve into an Umbreon. As for the generation difference, it could've been whilst the stuff of Generation 2 had happened. Like remember how Blue was the Gym Leader of the last Kanto Gym? Yeah... It could've been in memory after the events.

This video made me think of something interesting. Blue claims, in the Pokémon Tower, that he caught a Cubone. Yet he has an empty slot in his party. This makes me lean more toward you killing Blue's Raticate. Here's why: whenever you catch a Pokémon if you have space in your party, the Pokémon will remain in your party. However, if there's no space, they get automatically sent to your box. I know you all know this, but it raises the question: why doesn't Blue have his Cubone on him if he has a free slot in his party? If he's coming down from Pokémon Tower, he should have the Cubone on him and not an empty slot. Furthermore, how _could_ that have happened. You can't just send Mons to your PC at will. I think that what could have caused this to happen could have been Blue burying his Raticate. Rather than lugging his dead Pokémon around (which isn't that big, but can you imagine if it were something like an Onix?) he kept it in its Pokéball until it was time to bury it. On the way up the tower, Blue encountered a Cubone and captured it. Including the dead Raticate, Blue had 6 Pokémon on him, so the Cubone got sent to his PC. Blue then buried his Raticate, leaving him with one open slot and no Cubone in his party as he descended the tower. I'm not saying this theory is definitively true. I'm also not saying it's definitively untrue. That's what I like about this theory. It's open to interpretation. If you don't like it, you don't have to accept it because it's not actually confirmed, nor do I think it's even able to be confirmed. Unless we saw Blue's Raticate at the end with him, or something like that, there'd be a way to confirm. But there really isn't any way to confirm that his Raticate is still alive. However, that doesn't automatically mean that it's _not_ alive. We really can't say definitively either way. However, there is still enough supporting evidence to make this theory entirely plausible. So if you do like the theory, you can accept it and make it a part of your experience. It's open to interpretation and you get to do that any way you like. And that's what I like about this theory.

But then he would have caught it before Raticate got a grave, and do you really think the trainers put them in their graves alone, that there's no one assigning them and helping them? Also he mentions earlier that he has caught 40 Pokemon and where are they? All in the box. He could also have left the tower in between.

Because ghost type pokemon cant effect normal types either, allowing him to effectively go through the tower virtually unscathed. Besides, why bench the pokemon completely when you could just not use it in that area? It's not like you have to use your entire team for every battle.

Courtney Davis well, in the anime trainers use their whole team. In this case Raticate had no use and could better be switched out for an other pokemon, Raticate is not a very strong pokemon later so Blue might wanted to change his raticate for an stronger pokemon

... Why does Red have to be the one who did it? Pokemon kill and eat each other in the wild, so it could totally have been a wild encounter gone wrong. Maybe Team Rocket did it. What I think is most likely is that while training and feeling frustrated at Raticate's lacking performance, he pushed it too hard and refused to withdraw it when it was too weak. Another trainer might have accidentally killed it, trusting that his/her opponent would know when to bring his Pokemon back into its ball. This not only doesn't insinuate Red is a killer, it also heavily contributes to Blue's tendency to only care about strength and ignore the feelings of Pokemon. Having it be an accident is a perfectly logical explanation for why only Raticate dies.

"If anyone killed it, Blue killed it." I know you threw that line in there as a joke, but it actually coincides with a theory I've had for a long time. I don't think the player killed Blue's Raticate; I think Blue killed it. Not like, he strangled it or anything, but this is my theory... You can lose the first battle to him and the second one is optional, but in the Cerulean City fight, you HAVE to beat him to advance the story. During that fight, his Pokemon are Pidgeotto, Abra, Rattata, and the first stage of whatever starter he has. When you defeat him, his ego is crushed because he hates losing to you. He looks over his team. His starter will be stronger when it evolves (which it's about to; he might've been waiting for it to learn a specific move), Abra still has two more stages to go (and will get to the second very soon), and Pidgeotto was probably his best Pokemon during the fight. That left Rattata, who he felt the most disappointment towards because he's realizing that it isn't a good member of his team, but he's already put work into training it. Because of this, Blue devises a plan; using unjust methods to force his Raticate to evolve. Why is it level 16 when Rattata evolves at level 20? Because Blue is an impatient jerk; he wants to be the very best by yesterday. On the SS Anne, he challenges the player again, but you're forced to beat him to progress. His Raticate has become sick from the methods that Blue has used on it, further coursing through the rat's body from the act battling. Blue uses a Revive (he's Professor Oak's grandson; he probably has a lot of money) or other methods to unfaint his Raticate so not to show the Pokemon Center nurse what he's secretly done. When you enter Pokemon Tower, Blue instantly turns to them as they approach him, like he's startled. However, he keeps up his cocky attitude like nothing's wrong. But wait, didn't he say that he just caught a Cubone? Well, that would make sense, IF IT WAS IN HIS PARTY. He has five Pokemon, not six; Pokemon only get transferred to the PC if your party is full. So what happened? Determined to make his training on Raticate mean something, he'd taken it to Lavender Town, which is full of Ghost-types; if he could teach Raticate to somehow manage to hit them with Normal-type moves, he's already be on the road to becoming a godly trainer. However Raticate fails, badly. The Ghost types can't hit him either, but Blue is fed up. He realizes that there are Cubone in the Tower, and commands his Raticate to fight them to prove that he's irreplaceable. Raticate is tired and sick, but obeys his ruthless trainer. He barely manages to get the Cubone down to low health, which Blue then captures, saying that a Raticate up to his standards should be on the ranks of at level 25 by now, but fails to defeat these level 15/17 Cubone. Blue has given up on him, and Raticate, exhausted from the toxins coursing through its veins and battling stress, dies. After it's all said and done, you enter the Tower and converse with Blue, who puts up his jerk attitude from before; he won't admit that one of his Pokemon has died, because he believes that he's better than you at everything, even with taking care of his Pokemon. He refuses to have his reputation shattered just because of a "useless Raticate". You find it curious how the Cubone he claimed to have caught isn't on his team, along with his Raticate being missing, but think little of it for now, too annoyed by Blue's ego. And you never notice the Raticate's corpse that'd been hidden behind one of the tombstones. Rest in Peace, Raticate.

My personal opinion: You did a fantastic job of explaining your opinion, but I still think there's a high chance the protagonist (who I will refer to as Red) killed Blue's Raticate. Let's start with the beginning of the battle. Where was Blue at the time? On a ship. A high-class ship, where most passengers were not serious Pokemon Trainers. Blue was there to speak with the captain, whom he'd heard had the HM for Cut; he wasn't expecting to get into any battles, and certainly wasn't expecting Red to turn up. Why, then, would he bother carrying several healing items with him? He probably had a few on hand, just to be on the safe side, but not enough to revive his whole team after losing. So, upon encountering Red, Blue challenges him and loses. All of Blue's Pokemon at this point in time are fainted. He pushes past Red, presumably headed for the Pokemon Center. While there _was_ a lady on board who could heal Pokemon, it's likely Blue had no idea she was there. Again, he came to see the captain, not to mingle with passengers. The problem was that the SS Anne had a large number of passengers. In the crowded environment, Blue couldn't quickly exit the ship, so he decided to use what little healing items he'd brought with him in the meantime. He was able to revive all of his Pokemon except Raticate; he probably prioritized the rest of his team over it, since he considered it weak like you said. When at last Blue reached the Vermillion Pokemon Center, it was too late. The rest of his Pokemon had made it thanks to his items, but his Raticate had passed away. He went to the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town to put it to rest, where he once again ran into Red. Blue was surprised to see Red at a cemetery, but at the same time didn't want Red to know he'd lost a team member. He may have tried to defuse the situation with a joke, thus his comment: "What brings you here? Your Pokemon don't look dead!". After this, Blue and Red get in another battle. Why would Blue have challenged Red when he was grieving over his Raticate's loss and knew he could lose another Pokemon to his rival? Well, consider Blue's personality. I personally can imagine him dealing with grief through anger. Is it really a stretch to say he would take out his anger on his rival? No. In fact, that's exactly what he would do. Still upset over his Raticate, he decided to take it out on the person who had killed it. His Pokemon made it through after his loss here - and I guess every other loss except St. Anne - because he was able to quickly and easily reach a Pokemon Center, since he didn't have to push through a crowd first. This is just what I think, though. With theories like this there really isn't a right or wrong answer :)

This video was exceptional and I haven't seen any other KZreadr cover this theory to a point that they can prove without a shadow of adoubt in my mind that you did not kill the Raticate. Thank you for making this video and disproving this theory, I always hated it because it had little evidence but I couldn't find a way to disprove it so I commend you on your efforts.

How Blue's Raticate Died ↓ Your rival's Raticate sustained serious injuries from the battle…but, because of crowding and confusion on the luxury liner, he was unable to make it to a Pokémon Center in time and the Raticate passed away. The real reason your rival is in Lavender Town to begin with is to lay his deceased friend to rest

Another thing you forgot to mention that's kinda related to the video: battles can actually be life-threatening to a Pokémon's health; in the episode _Pika and Goliath!_ Pikachu is hit in the face at point-blank range with a Hyper Beam from a Raichu, and falls into a coma, which causes Ash to again think about evolving Pikachu, since there are some moves like Hyper Beam that pikachu can't learn

Infinity War without context

This was made before Game Theory covered it, but what proves this theory false is that Blue's Rattata and Raticate are two different Pokemon. The Raticate you "kill" is level 16, and Rattata doesn't evolve until level 20. This confirms that Blue does in fact release Pokemon he doesn't want anymore or stores them in his PC. There's nothing special about that Raticate, nothing to indicate that it's any different from Pokemon you yourself would store or release because they're no longer useful.

Blue is troubled but he isnt an asshole like that, it's possible his pokemon just evolved at an earlier level. It's not the only time it's happened in the games, or even just in gen one. Lance, who is described as a great and KIND trainer who cares for his pokemon has multiple dragonite that are underleveled, and we all know you can't just go out and catch dragonite.

there is very little that is unkind about giving a pokemon to the professor which is what the PC actually does, and as far as releasing it goes, that isn't exactly unkind either unless he released it in some environment it isn't suited for like a cave. He's also shown in all the canons to be more of a team valor mindset than a team instinct one (to use relatable terms) and neither of those are exactly team rocket level bad or anything. :/

in the anime and the manga, the pokemon sent to the professors through the PC are taken care of at the lab. they don't "rot in the PC" like a lot of people seem to think. I think sometimes pokemon fans just like being dark for the sake of it.

He put it in the PC with his other Pokemon. Before the battle on the SS Anne he even says he had caught 40 kinds of Pokemon up to that point, indicating he had a lot of Pokemon in the PC. He just put his Raticate in the PC with the others.

Here's something interesting... ever notice how you meet Blue an Silph Co., very close to where you fight Giovanni? What was Blue doing there? He certainly wasn't fighting Giovanni as his Pokémon were fully healed and so were Giovanni's. I can understand his not caring much about what Team Rocket does, but why would be go to Silph Co. for no reason? You can't catch Pokémon there, and if he was looking for free items, well, he didn't do a very good job considering how many items you could find there.

The pokeballs slowly heal the pokemon, as blue sent out raticate he dropped the pokeball and he just pushed the raticate behind him when it fainted and it didnt get healed. Pokemon can bleed but when theyre in the pokeballs they don't bleed so the raticate bled out and died. just a theory

I've seen several videos try to debunk this theory, but you have actually got the best evidence that it's not true, you mentioned how Blue should act and the biggest thing everyone kept forgetting about..... the effing PC, seriously, you mentioned it and I'm like "you actually could highly be correct, just like how Blue wants the best team and tries out each Pokémon, I do the exact same, once I fully evolve a Pokémon and see that it's not the best, I just shove it into the PC as well, well, now I'd probably set it free instead, but still, most people put those Pokémon in the PC as well"

*cough cough* look at the level. Raticate on SS Anne is level 16. He caught a wild one, as Rattata evolves at level 20. This indicates that Blue CAN and DOES switch Pokemon in and out of the PC.

When blue had a rattata, it wasn't high enough level to evolve into raticate, so he just caught the raticate in the wild, but no one knows what happened to his raticate

As Bulbapedia beautifully sums it up: Green and Blue are the only main Pokémon Adventures characters whose names were changed for the English translation. This is due to the complexity of Generation I’s game releases, where in Japan, Red Version was paired with Green Version (leaving Blue as the third), and in the rest of the world Red was paired with Blue (while there was no Green). Since she was not Red’s rival, the translators did not see it fitting that she have her name be that of Red’s "rival version". This name change is present in both the VIZ Media and Chuang Yi translations. Later,Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen would be released as remakes of the original Pokémon Red and Blue/Green, and unlike the original games, the remakes would feature a playable female character which Green is based on. A panel in the original VIZ printing of Volume 3 forgets to make this change, however. When the Pokémon League scoreboard is shown, Red’s rival is identified as “GREEN” and Green is identified as “BLUE”. This error was still present in the compilation volume The Best of Pokémon Adventures: Red, but was corrected for the 2009 second edition.

another piece of info to support what you and I believe is your battle near nugget bridge, Blue says "I've already caught over 40 kinds of pokemon" and most of those are probably in his pc or released

I now agree. Not about the PC, though. I believe that he RELEASED Raticate. However, I believe when Blue asked why you were there, I believe he MEANT it. I think that he was sneaking around or something, and then you come along and he doesn't know why YOU are in there.

in my opinion Gary cares for his raticate as much as he cares for his other pokemon, for those of you who have not played the gen 1 games recently he cares very little for them, constantly calling them weak and blaming them for his own losses instead of himself.

With the first point, raticate could have been hurt a lot worse than the other Pokemon.

+Andreas Hoeg Easy. A wounded limb or exhaustion could make a Pokemon unable to battle just as much as a cut to the stomach or a gash to the head. For all you know, you could have given it a concussion. Also, I didn't say that the other Pokemon were fine, just maybe they were more lucky than raticate

Umm, Pokémon is not that deep. You could have 1 hp and get hit with a super effective solar beam. And you could have been Lv.1 with the one who hyperbeamed you at Lv.100. Your Pokémon would still be perfectly fine. You could have finished Gary's RATTATA IN YELLOW/ RATTICATE IN BLUE/RED/GREEN with a not very effective move. Plus, he came in the Pokémon Tower to catch some Ghost Types and complete the dang Pokédex. Watch the video for EVEN MORE details. Like: "I wouldn't call someone who killed my Pokémon "Pal""

Blue's raticate is LV 16 raticate evolves at LV 20 so he must have caught it in the wild

I've always headcannoned that where Red chose to take his time raising the pokemon he wanted, Blue opted to take the path of least resistance. Sure, he went out of his way to catch 'em all just like Red, but Blue wanted to become the strongest trainer in the world as quickly as possible. He started out using his Raticate because Raticate actually can be pretty powerful in the early game, but later switched to more powerful pokemon once Raticate started going obsolete. As for the rest of the pokemon on his team, I imagine after getting Bill to show him his collection of rare pokemon, he used the Pokedex's Area function to specifically seek out the ones that would evolve into the most powerful pokemon in Kanto, starting with Abra which he caught just before encountering Red on Nugget Bridge.

I have a theory. Maybe blue trade his raticate for another Pokémon(depending on your starter). He knows that he can trade because he has a alakazam, a Pokémon that he can have only by trading.

Am I the only one who puts down their volume when they hear the lavender town song 😳😳😳

I can't stand Lavender Town's theme playing because it gives me a headache on the sound (electronic sound?) (I don't know how to explain it) they use to make the music. And every time it plays, my ear starts to ring. I'm pretty sure other people experiences this too.

Not me I just never listened to it because I played leaf green when I was 8 and the music just always creeped me out so much that I couldn't go to the town without turnoff my sounds. Infact The entire town creeped be out so I rarly even went there after I beat the part of the story requiring you to go there

When the game came out, suicide rates in children in Japan skyrocketed and it was put down to the high pitches of lavender town...

So basically Pokemon Nerds are in conclusion that made them got farther away from the fact that might be he was totally fine sitting on blue's pc or He just released Raticate for specific reasons like ash's pidgeot.

What if it was Blue himself, who killed his Raticate? I mean, if you look at its level, he shouldn't have been able to evolve from Ratata to Raticate yet. I think, since Blue's only goal was to be the world's strongest Pokémontrainer (and it is known that he didn't treat his Pokémon very well), he pushed his Raticate too hard, forcing him to evolve too early and later maybe pushed him even further to keep up with the strength of the other teammembers, what caused him to die of the immense pressure and stress. It's just a thought, but in my opinion it would make sense. :D

I think he trade raticate for execute

It seems that a certain channel with 6M + subs did a theory on this using the same nickname for your rival and came to the conclusion that was nowhere near as good as yours. (It was a different Raticate? How do you explain the first one? What about the empty slot on his team? Where can you catch a low level Raticate?) Seriously, MatPat's theory annoys me with all of the flaws, but yours is a very good explanation.

The funny thing about the rival battle is that they did do that in Sun and Moon. If you lost to your rival, your rival will be the victor and you will continue on your journey (his Raichu... unless you are prepared, is a really tough Pokémon to beat in the start)

well you don't kill his rattacate rattata evolvse at lv 20 not 16 so this indicates that he most likley caught rattcait in the wild and put rattata in the pc then caught a stronger pokemon and put ratacait in the pc as well its a theory you might want to consider (I ca'nt spell today)

Yes I know I'm like 3 years late but here's what I think... I think Blue went to Pokemon Tower to catch Cubone to try and complete the pokedex like he says in origins "While I was working on my Pokedex" So...not saying I'm right but just a little side note.

You killed it and Blue didn't care about it being dead haha.

Straight after 10 second I say you didn't kill his Raticate cuz when his raticate evolves when it's lvl 20 HIS RATICATE IS LVL 16 HIS OLD RATATTA WAS LVL 15 SO YOU DIDN"T KILL IT

Another one could be that blue always kept aside a spare Pokémon so he wasn't killed by a wild Pokémon and it would make sense because he only had five on the SS Anne so his 6th slot could be Raticate
