Did Fame And Money Cause Time To Pass THE PHARCYDE By? Stunted Growth Music

Today’s feature is a rap group that had an unsuspected uprising in hip hop in that they didn’t set out to become stars but when they did it was exactly what led to their demise. They also didn’t set out to produce a classic hip hop album on their first try that is considered one of the best hip hop albums of the 90s. They just wanted to be around music and not wind up bums on the street when they knew they had the talent to be more. Their songs “Runnin” and “Passing me by” are considered golden age hip hop standouts that represent the group at its peak and in prime form. I feel if you ask The Pharcyde if they had the chance to do anything different throughout their career together, and what would those thing be, they’d all scream hell yea and just about everything. As far as a pure hip hop group the Pharcyde had everything. Did The Pharcyde let stardom pass them by? What happened?

Imani, Fatlip and Slimkid Tre are reunited and performing under the alias The Farside formerly The Pharcyde because Bootie Brown legally owns the group name. Bootie Brown didn't want to be apart of reunion while rest of the group members are doing a 30th Anniversary tour for "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde".

Nah, Bizarre Ryde 2 the Pharcyde was the one. Labcabincalifornia wasn’t nearly as cohesive, and Fatlip was already on the way out and not on it as much. And Dilla had like 3 songs or something-most of the songs just didn’t have that same kind of vibrant energy and humor that the first album had. That said, if they could combine that fun energy of the first album with caliber of Dilla beats featured on the two singles … THAT album would have been a classic for sure! But most hip hop heads would say Bizarre Ryde is a classic; even the grumpy, New York gatekeepers loved that album.

In addition, The Pharcyde wanted their music to evolve for their next album; they stayed in New York for a while and wanted Q-Tip to produce labincalifornia But Tip was too busy to produce due to his work with Nas Illmatic and Mobb Deep The infamous. So he referred J Dilla to be their main producer which gave them a different sound compared to their first album. I think if Tip produced labincalifornia they might have more a commercial success. Remember the Pharcyde was on the cover of Midnight Marauders; so since they were tight with Tribe they wanted to be legit artists for Hip Hop. Personally I like their second album.

After Fatlip and Slimkid Tre left the group, Imani and Bootie Brown continued putting out music together as The Pharcyde. The group reformed for Rock the Bells in 2008, but it was short-lived due to the same personal differences. Fatlip and Slimkid would tour as Bizarre Ride, while Imani and Bootie Brown would tour under The Pharcyde. Recently, the group put their issues aside, and reformed as The Far Side, but without Bootie Brown as he doesn't want to engage with the music industry at the moment. Fatlip, Slimkid and Imani put a song out with K-Natural (who had toured with the Bizarre Ride) called Slhick Tawlk in May. Really great to hear them back on a record together after all this time, and the song makes light of some of their issues over the years with some light jabs at themselves.

People weren't ready for this version of Pharcyde and as a result, I feel they missed the true genius of this album. We were expecting classic teenage antics pharcyde and what we got was grown men with real problems over hardcore Hip-Hop beats. Devil Music will always be the realest song they have recorded. Imo both albums were equally good but for much different reasons.

My sister was the producer’s , John Martinez aka J swift’s girlfriend throughout the entire making of Labcabincalifornia album. She lived with John in his Hollywood Hills home that was minimally or barely furnished. I believe there were more instruments , albums and studio equipment than anything else. She would tell me how the guys disagreed with each other and John over things which is to be expected because this is a group and not a solo thing everyone has their own creative ideas. But, overall she said it was a fun house it was a fun environment and it was fun for her to be a part of witnessing the formulation of everything coming together and all the creativity in the room. My sister conveyed to me the pressure and stress that John was under from the record label. John had a particular vision for this album and for the group as a whole. John did not, and to this day still has not really been allowed the opportunity to show just how talented and gifted he is. He is/was definitely under rated. The pressure and stress was too much for him and unfortunately what started out as something done occasionally to help one stay up and create, slowly and surely turned into a full blown addiction, rendering him broke, destitute and homeless. I felt really bad for John after learning about his situation after seeing him in a documentary that showcased him and probably some others (I don’t really recall others I specifically remember John because I was hurt by what I witnessed.) I hope he’s happy and doing much better. I think I heard they were trying to deport him back to Spain. I don’t know if that’s happened or not. He’s a good dude. Too bad his sister’s career never took off like it should have. God bless the Martinez family!

They were so creative, they already did everyting in 10 words, that big musicians today are creating albums around. They are the star trek of modern science fiction movies

If Bootie Brown continues to not willing to reunite with the Pharcyde and refuses to let other members use the name "Pharcyde", then Fatlip, Imani & Slimkid3 should reach out to WestCoast Alternate Hip-Hop artist Murs to fill the void of Bootie Brown and name the album "The Far Side of Murs".

Excellent video. The Pharcyde may not have had the longest career, but there is something admirable about a group being able to influence an entire genre with only two albums. It would be great if you did a video on underground acts like Clouddead, People Under the Stairs, Little Brother, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Dark Time Sunshine, Blueprint, or even Oddisee.
