J Dilla's KICK DRUM FIST FIGHT - Deconstructing "Runnin' "
Have you ever heard a kick drum that’s so unique, so unpredictable, so… incredible, that you’ve wanted to fight someone? That might sound a little intense, but that’s exactly what happened when J Dilla was producing the song “Runnin’” by The Pharcyde in 1995.

J Dilla is the greatest producer of all time no question. the fact that 29 of the 31 tracks on Donuts was produced in the hospital with an SP-100 is just unbelievable to even imagine. That seals it for me.

@@vertical_parallelIt's not very sad , we were blessed with his gift for as long as we could AND MANY TREASURES HE LEFT US. It's obvious he was born on a MISSION 😊.

@@gabeeskridge8291 Nice spin on the story bro but yea It's still sad. Dude was 32 years old and was monster of creativity and dedication... as well as just an all around good dude. He had waaaay more to grow sonically and bless the world with his gifts.

totally @diggingthegreats, it's interesting and informative even if I know a lot of the background. You have a knack for putting into context, keeping it fresh, thanks dude! All the best from Morocco, Sean - www.youtube.com/@ketama047
As a fellow hip-hop channel owner and as a fan, I have to give you much respect on the content you make. The humor, the stories, the research. It's all super dialed in. Your success is well earned!
LABCABINCALIFORNIA album by The Pharcyde is criminally underrated. One of my favorite Hiphop albums ever recorded

@andyboi8283 Must not listen to alot of Hip-Hop. The emcees spitting bars are subpar. Two things come with a good Hip-Hop song. The Beat & The Rapper. Pharcyde lacks good Dope Rhyme Sayers. Nothing too amazing. You should try listening to Nas, Mos Def, Big Pun, or André 3000 (Outkast)

I think its a little wack to hate on them cause you can't catch the vibe of the flow. I'm also from out east and vibe a lot harder with cold winter energy. I'll sum it up with a line form the legend BIG JUS, "Straight up, for niggas that don't understand. Obviously, this wasn't made for you, so fuck you, but jus company flow lune tns and i'm out."@@phonymex3340

@@phonymex3340Very interesting your words. As knowledgeable as you are , you should know hip-hop has lanes in its artistry. You're stating the obvious , they have a unique feel. THEY WERE SUCCESSFUL IN WHAT THEY NATURALLY CREATED.

@gabeeskridge8291 oh yeah the vibe itself and melodies are carried out by the producer. JD does a very good job of doing that. But still, the lyricism is not your typical East Coast wordplay
Great storytelling as always! Sidenote: was suprised to read in Dilla Time that T3 was the one who "discovered" the Stan Getz & Luiz Bonfa loop used in "Runnin". Definitely deserves some credit for that! 🙌
I've been digging into hip-hop history for a while now, but you're contextualizing it in a way that's accessible and engaging. I appreciate you man. Keep it up!!
This channel is insane. I can't even wrap my mind around making a video like this. The work that goes into this is just incredible.
just got recommended this video.... used to hear runnin as a kid but i couldnt find it for almost 2 decades, and now not only have I found it but ive also found it dilla made yet another song I absolutely love
I've used KZread as my primary entertainment platform for something like 8 years, have subscribed to well over 100 channels. Yours is the first that made me think "Let me hit that notification bell. I'd hate to miss even _one_ upload"
I’m so glad we have someone technically breaking down Dillas work in such a professional series. I’m just now finishing his entire production discog, and I can’t wait to start trying to reprod some of these. Hope there’s many more to come!
Quickly becoming my favourite channel. Came across one of your videos a few months back and have been looking forward to new drops ever since. Keep up the great work. Big fan here in Dublin, Ireland.
My guy, this is great content. Your soulquarians video got me to subscribe but every video is mind blowing to me. I have a lot of respect for what you do here. Thanks for it.

this channel is just a gem. its incredible how much information, love and style you put into this videos. thank you very much for this, every video is just a banger
Dude…….so glad I found you. ❤ Loving your content so far, like your story telling style. Man, much love to Dilla. ❤
This channel is so dope 💯🔥 I love hearing the behind the scenes stories of what takes place during production.
This channel is special and your videos are only getting better. Thank you
It's amazing what a simple and even standard idea it is to turn off quantization and play in drums by hand, the way music had ALWAYS been made, but JD is the first guy to buck the trend of an entire genre and do it on a major release. That's not to take away from his brilliance, but it just takes one guy to go, "I I think I'd rather do it this way" for everyone to see the possibilities. You're doing a great job on this channel. I'm duly impressed.

When I was a kid my cousin died and left us his equipment, we had a Korg keyboard workstation but the loop didn’t work it was a malfunction. We had to play the drums and every sound for like 3 minutes, we had to count bars in our heads for the chorus 😂😂😂😂
Dude - I've only watched a few of your videos do far, but your channel is so dope 👌🏻. Thank you & big respect from the UK.
Recently came across this channel and wow I love it. The guy knows his stuff and presents it very well. Amazing ♥️
Thank you so much for the history rundown - I've been listening to this track a ton after I discovered it for the first time around 3 years ago, but never knew the story behind the crew. It's one of my top songs of all time and means a lot to me, so listening to it now will be wild knowing the story behind everything
God bless you, sir. I just can't overstate how much I love this era of music and how much I love you talking about it
Dude, these videos are absolutely incredible. I discovered your channel about 4 hours ago and have just been flying through your content since. Extensively researched, authoritatively presented, and edited in a way that makes the pieces flow beautifully, this really is a goldmine of musical knowledge. You clearly know the subject inside out, and it shows in your confident yet comfortable demeanour. Might I also add, when you chuck in a bit of DJing, such as the Beegees mix in the James Brown video... sheeeeeesh! Keep at it man, you've got a new sub here for sure!
Another awesome episode Brandon! Love learning more about Dilla. Keep it up.🤙
I love the videos man! My new favourite channel!

I was hoping you were going to do a video on runnin and you never disappoint
Your videos are my most amazing find of channels. Not only do you work through my life of music interest. Fillin the gaps I’ve never understood. And the editing quality is world class. Then when you bring the bass out and plays phat beats. You just slam it. It makes you the authority of modern soul historian.
Thanks for this. Ever since this track came out I always felt something was "off" but couldn't figure out what. It wasn't off, it was just the Dilla swing! 🔥
Once again sir. Job well done. Love the video and since oh humor.

Thank you so much for this content. I'm so into it.
Runnin’ is my top song of all time❤️ thank you for this video!
I've been trying to cover this song on drums and that kick pattern is not easy! It's awesome to see it mapped out like this. I also didn't know this was a Dilla Beat, but wow, to me this thing solidifies him as a legend even more. The drums on this beat are crazy.
you're so god damn funny dog, usually i find humor in similar videos a little forced but nah i kept giggling my ass off. not to mention how good the info in these are. please never stop :)
Man, hell yeah, I'm glad someone is gassing up this track for the here and now. I haven't even watched yet but lowkey I thought you meant how the drum kicks swing has that thump that just sounds like it's trading back and forth, didn't know that there was a real fight on it tho! 👀
Love the vid had no idea about the story behind this track. Keep up the good work, love it

these videos are the highest quality a video can get, everything is just perfect
Nice vid man
Please do more j dilla videos he’s one of the greats ❤
Your content is gold 🪙 Never pressed that KZread bell so fast in my life. Could I make a request for a future episode. Del The Funky Homosapiens crew The hieroglyphics which members led to an iconic song with Souls of Mischief - 93'till infinity. I believe you could do them justice, since they are highly influential yet there isn't much found on them regarding their overal story. I know you have a smorgasbord to choose from, so I won't hold my breath, but would be so interesting to hear more about them through your highly educational format. Peace
A classic album and a classic song! I didn't know this history tho! Thanks for the lesson 💯 RIP Dilla!!
I subbed when you only had below 1000 subscribers. Nah man the content is too good he's going to blow up give it a couple of weeks I said to myself. Here we are 100k !! Concrats well deserved & great content as always

Love it. I read this part in the book and wish someone can explain it and you delivered ❤
This fight was documented in the book Dilla Time. Great book.
Yo shoutout u for making great content!
Amazing video, you should do one covering Black Star's Little Brother. The microchops in that record are something out of this world and proves that J Dilla is the greatest to ever do it.
Great stuff, you spend more time analyzing these tracks than J Dilla and the other producers even put into making them :)
Great video
i love your videos so much
Great channel
I love the Pharcyde. Could you do a video breaking down all the borrowed clips they've used and all the other artists that borrowed the Pharcyde's style?! That would be awesome!
Yo very good story with some serious gems!
Love this!
Damn bro, dilla startin fights cause his beats are THAT GOOD?! i didnt think my opinion of him could get any better, man was i wrong. Thanks for the awesome video man!
