Citizen has always had some hidden gems, and over the last few years they've started really killing it with their new releases, particularly with mechanical watches they somewhat neglected before.

Citizen doesn't get the credit they deserve. I own 5 and I have yet to encounter any of the notorious QC issues that Seiko is known for. Also, this dial is stunning. Absolutely love it.

Citizen doesn’t get the credit, cause most of their interesting watches are not being offered outside of Japan. And the watches they offer here in Europe are mostly non mechanical, big and pretty uninteresting. So yeah, I don’t think they deserve more credit.

I mean, I have 6 Seiko's with 0 QC issues so that's not saying much. This is a beautiful watch though and I can appreciate it without slagging off another brand

I really love Citizen, had only good experience with the models I own. But now I just want this one on my collection. It looks amazing.

I think Citizen is highly under-rated as a watch company. Seiko could learn a thing or two from them about build quality and QC. And their high-end paper dials are exquisite. This watch is a no-brainer for me. Definitely worth considering.

Seikos problem is that they have way to much products. They began to see that problem and started cutting off a lot of models. It's like Seiko has it's own favourites. There are watches like the Alpinist reinterpretation where they go crazy on the specs and the QC is on point. Then they have some other Prospex-models they don't care about. It's not even a thing about pricepoint. There are some 2000 dollar watches from Seiko with bad QC and models like their diver-reinterpretations are flawless. The Sumo has way better finishing than the normal turtle. I think it's good for them that they step up in price, reduce their catalouge and offer better products. They really understood their own faults from recent years.

I'm happy to see Citizen stepping up their game here. A lot of people have lost enthusiasm for Seiko in the last few years so it's great to have a quality alternative.

I've been looking at this recently so was great to see a fantastic, detailed review, thank you. It really helps to see those macro shots and especially to see it on wrist and you always do a fantastic job. I've always been a fan of Citizen and think they are overlooked/underrated a bit by the KZread community. Thanks for another great review, keep up the outstanding work.

Fair play for doing the video. I had covid earlier in the year, had a tickly cough with it, talking was a nuisance at times. Get better. Hope he are all doing fine.

Citizen is so underrated, I saw the dial and I really liked it but....then you showed the movement and the automatic rotor, what is that :O truely stunning!

Had some great citizen divers, and recently started looking at their other offerings. Picked up a titanium NJ2180 in blue and love it. Dial is very reminiscent of a Presage.

That Citizen is way nicer than I expected, even compared to the thumbnail image. The unique dial, hands and case finishing all add up to an impressive piece. The silver dial probably looks like the surface of the moon. 👍🏻

Just an pair of hours talking about this with a friend. Between 650 and 750 depend blue and white dial in Spain. Awesome

That's a beautiful dial. Reminds me of the Seiko cocktail series matcha limited edition from last year but in a different color and with a bit more color dynamics. Really well done.

Thanks for not dinging the 19mm lug width too much! I agree it fits great with the proportions and would see it worse as 18 or 20. This one is really cool.

What a fantastic dial. I must say some of the JDM models are fantastic.

Been eying this for a while and finally bit the bullet. 100% lives up to the hype. Great size as well (I was afraid it would be a little thick for my wrists). Might be my new daily driver as it dresses up and down well.

Definitely one gorgeous dial. I put this one in my 10 amazing watch dials video I released a couple of months ago.

I do love my Ginza. Interestingly, it also has 19mm lugs and an unsigned crown. The lug width doesn't really bother me too much as a 20mm straps sit in there just fine.

I feel your pain Jody, my voice has lowered two octaves as I've been under the weather too. Glad it didn't stop you from reviewing this watch though, a real beauty it is.

I never knew that 😳. I'm still learning. wowie. I think texture dial and metal fleck colours should be awsome next year.

I dig it. Great dial. Excellent dauphin hands, beautifully colored dial. You don't need a pattern to be pretty. I'd wear it constantly.

I just got this watch for Christmas and I am blown away. The quality to value ratio is amazing

In fairness, the Citizen Chronomasters, and the washi paper variants, have always had exceptional dials. But, they tend to be JDM models.

I have to say that if I hadn't seen the brand logo I'd have sworn it was a Seiko dial. Hands and indices have a very Sarb 35 look to them. Cracking looking watch and I even think the date window suits it. Looks an absolute strap monster as well, despite the 19mm.

It’s back in stock and I am pulling the trigger on it this time but I have to grab the black one on bracelet and switch it. What a stellar looking dial. I had to come back and check it again on the best Watch review channel on KZread, long time Jody ! Hope all is well brother !

I certainly was guessing more than $ 500, having a curved sapphire crystal, nice strap with a deployant clasp. The 19 mm lug with is slightly annoying but Citizen got the proportions right. More of these please Citizen!

Many Grand Seiko do exactly the same and use the 19mm and 21mm While unpopular measures but certainly available

Jody: Hope you feel better soon. A lovely dial indeed. I would agree that it may be the best dial in 2022. I was surprised by the cost - I estimated $495 US, or a little less. What a beautiful dial!

I'm not a textured dial kinda guy but this watch is beautiful. Well done Citizen.

I love my Citizen Blue Angels! Very beautiful and surprisingly legible! The leather/nylon strap is great but takes time to break in.

Cool dial. For someone like myself who already has a Seiko Presage Cocktail Time SARY085, it would seem a little redundant to add one of these Citizens to the collection. I think the Presage Cocktail Times offer a bit more in case design, crown, case dimensions, etc.

As I've been window shopping their washi dial HAQ and others of their highest end (Chrono Master, the awkwardly named The Citizen) for the better part of the last couple years, I guessed a bit higher of a price for this stunner. Also as a big fan of Seiko's vintage 70s high end quartz, this too sings to me. Some real Morpho vibes. I really wish Citizen opened up more of these to the US! Though, I guess part of the fun of them is how physically rare and under the radar they are.

Nice to see Citizen getting some love although the Seiko is equally nice. Great video as always Jody!

Good analysis within the review. Agree with you about branding. This is on my Christmas list. I find your videos alyways worth a second look.

I aimed at between £600-700 which looking at how sterling is doing ain't far off , but i'd say i'd take this hi-beat beauty over what Seiko offers for an equivalent price plus in general Citizen qc by comparison isn't as much of an issue , but agree re: the signed crown & having varying lines but the main thing is the quality of the piece for the price .

Great review as always Jody. And thanks to Gary for providing the watch for review. I love the watch, the dial is stunning, but 38mm is too small for my liking. And then there is the lack of a signed crown too. And finally the cost is way above what I would pay (as is the Seko SBP259!). Keep 'em coming Jody.

Amazing watch Jody! Recently Citizen has started to focus more on "watch connoisseurs". Until then, it was almost 100% aimed at the average joe only.

Fabulous looking watch. Love the deployment strap and GS handset. Dial is great, being unique. Not sure on the engine. Looks good on wrist.

Always have time for Citizen pardon the pun. When a well executed dial such as this, looks 3D on a 2D device, you know it's pure quality. Pity about the unsigned crown, as that would have been the icing but that doesn't detract from a stunning timepiece.

Simple and elegant with an interesting colour palette, think Jackson Pollock lite. Impressive with a silly lug width, but I would forgive it that for that dial.

One of the only watches I’ve ever bought immediately at first sight. Amazing

Nice watch, nice video. FYI current Seiko Presage range at Melbourne Seiko Boutique is $650 to $6,400 AUD and everything in between. So this Citizen is in the lower to mid Seiko Presage range 👍

I've been a Citizen fan for a longtime....not the cluttered over stamped but the simple classic timeless dials ! The cluttered ones remind me of the Brietling Navitimer ...way to much numerals ! This one's very nice !

I’m personally a minimalist dial guy myself, own this one and a junghans chronoscope without the numerals. But if there is one watch which can pull off a crowded dial it has to be the navitimer, absolute classic!

Awesome dial much better than the Ginza in my opinion and the shirt you are wearing is awesome in a completely different way 👌

I like it. I also tiled the floor in my master bath with a tile that is almost identical to this dial

I've got an uncluttered Citizen BM8476. I love this watch and it gets lots of wrist time, lots of scratches on the mineral though and more than my other watches. I find it hard to connect with other Citizen watches and I don't know why. Nice looking watch in this video.

Hope you're feeling better, Jody. My thoughts and prayers be with you. So funny you chose this as I myself have been insearch of the infamous "perfect Grand Seiko alternative." For said reason I to have been eyeing up much of Citizen's catalogue, including of course, "The Citizen," a.k.a. the "Chronomaster" line, as well as Seiko, Orient, ect. I had it pegged between the high-$500's to low-$600's USD, and I remember thinking the same thing, "seems kind of high, for what amounts to a Miyota 9000 series. So I've narrowed it down to 2 different options at this point, and neither option are from a Japanese brand. Option #1, is the new AliExpress brand called Rmalti, w/ the "RM001." The nicest and supposedly well-made, Grand Seiko homage I have seen to date, and at a price roughly around $170 USD. Option #2, the Tissot, "Couturier" Powermatic 80, which is on sale on several site's for around $295 USD. I'm also considering the quartz for around $195 USD. From what I understand, both well made, and well finished options, for the price. Honestly, I'm really considering the quartz, white dial. Keep up the great work

Love it. I was expecting at least $800 Aussie. It’s all in the dial I guess, and probably fair enough. I think Citizen case finishing is excellent on the whole.

Citizen is one of those fantastic companies: mostly underrated, despite constantly pulling out innovative ideas. They are the LG of watches.

Since movements mean little to me, I'm looking "up". That dial and the measurements are worth every penny.

That's a beautiful watch. I'd have a hard time paying that for a Citizen, which I know is silly. But I'm glad to see them stepping up their game. Feel better soon, J.

Honestly I usually agree. I haven't seen many Citizens I found tempting.... but if I could afford to, this one might just do it. Sadly, my current most expensive watch was a little under half the cost of this one, and that was a stretch for me. lol

I Fink U Freeky and I like it a lot. The tiny strap is probably too small for my wrist, but nicest dial I have ever seen on a Citizen.

Yup gotta say your spot on again Jody and could well be a very nice gift for my best mate’s big birthday. That’s IF the UK pound ever goes back up in value!! Feel well very soon mate off myself today not feeling too good either (a bit crook even) 😉

Looks like it should have a "GS" on the dial - especially with that handset. And as with Seiko and GS, they (and you) are spending on the dial. I thought it was some sort of paper at first - I think it's really interesting that they can create this effect with metal.

That case and dial looks just like a Grand Seiko. Wow!

Amazing watch I am a proud owner of, no real weak point. I sold my NB1050-59L after buying this one ! The metal bracelet with duratect treatment can be ordered from the brand, it fits this wath since it's the same case

It is hard to tell on camera how it really looks, I find that in person the dials can look very different. The nicest dials I have seen are Grand Seiko but it is way out of my price range. They are fun to look at.

Awesome dial! Citizen is getting better in value for money compared to Seiko imo. Please review the Citizen Tsuyosa! It's an automatic, sapphire crystal Rolex OP inspired watch for 300 usd.

Not sure if I would buy one or not? It's a very attractive and well done watch, but I have a couple Cocktail Times and other dress/casual watches that already don't get worn nearly enough. It does appear that Citizen has figured out that the 8000 series movements, even the ones with hacking and hand winding weren't really cutting the mustard with enthusiasts and 9000 series movements were required. 👍

I saw this watch and it was love at first sight, but being a broke University student I can't buy this but surely one day, I'll own this.

Zelos' latest field watch has some very beautiful dials. Wondering if it will be on a future JOMW.

This watch caught my attention some time ago. Initially I wanted Tissot PRX but then I found this one. Both are at the same price range. I still can't decide which one should I get, but I'm slightly leaning towards Citizen. Thanks for rewiev Jody, there aren't many detailed rewievs of this watch on youtube.

I guessed it would come in at about $250, but that's probably because I'm still living in the 90's. Beautiful dial, for sure.

I am a Citizen fan, and a Presage fan and that is beautiful. Just a bit small for my wrist size, 40mm would of been perfect.

Awesome looking watch! Citizens been on a roll lately while Seikos been rather stagnant...

I own the NB1050-59A, which has a white dial with a slight silvery complexion. The stock bracelet was useless (male end links, two micro adjusts and 19mm as well), but after putting it on a Strapcode superfine mesh bracelet, it exudes more of a vintage King Seiko vibe. Very simple and elegant piece. Citizen also offers black and blue dial variants of the NB1050 line--these are great alternatives to the SARB for those who are interested.

I own the black dial as well. One of the best bang per buck watch out there. Crazy specs for the money and I like the bracelet. I am a bracelet guy so the 19mm doesnt matter to me - it wont leave the bracelet. The male endlinks are a plus in my book, because a 38mm is a small watch and it makes it wear better on my wrist (that obviously depends on wrist size). It has solid links and endlinks, it is sized with pins and collars (which imo is superior to just pins and equally easy to size in this case due to the collar being on the middle links and not on the outter), a milled clasp, etc. It could have more micro adjustments holes or at least half links for sure. And the clasp could be better finished on the inner part - upon close inspection you can see the harsh finishing on the inside of the scissored milled parts (a small sandpaper can fix it rather easily tho). But still it is a great bracelet for a watch that costs less than 500 bucks.

1:22 - - I got that Blue Angels model a couple months ago ⌚🤙. Only cost me 35 years of service with the same employer 🧐😆.

Nice video, thanks for that, Jody! Another King Seiko hommage, no better than the others, but the most expensive on the market. Is it agein "all about the dial"? Would like to see a comparison , e.g. with the Escapement Time or the Chameri. After all, Citizen made an amazing watch, but at a high cost.

Very true. But would've been better without date window. And yeah Citizen's odd lug width is a pain.

Looks lovely, but id go with the Seiko Presage Blue Moon. Would really have to see both in the flesh.
