Ben's Watch Club tends to cover affordable watches like Seiko, Timex, Casio, Citizen, MVMT, Vincero, Bulova, Orient, Hamilton, and more. We rarely feature luxury watches like Rolex, Patek Philippe, Breitling, Tag Heuer, Tudor, Grand Seiko, Cartier, Omega, Audemars Piguet, or Hublot due to their price.

@@andreabilardi508 I seriously doubt that. But if that's what you think, don't buy one. I've got almost a dozen, going back at almost 30 years, as new as last year, and every few years between. Never had an issue with a citizen watch, ever. So... You can assume, or take the word of someone who actually owns them. Up to you, I don't have a dog in the fight. So far, the top comments on the matter, seem to be agreeing with me. So again, there's that...

As a Citizen owner, I’ve always liked and been more than satisfied with their watches. They do exactly what they were built to do and exactly what I bought them for. That’s what I like in a watch. Well built and precise. In summary, Citizen watches are great, but they’re not meant for everyone.

Well built and precise is also why I have mine. Got it 10 years ago and its never missed a beat after wearing it pretty much every day, and the hand alignment is still perfect as far as I can see. I got it with the intention of never having to buy another watch, and seems to be doing well so far.

My first watch was the Citizen Blue Angels watch and it’s one of my favs - even years later. It radio syncs nightly and I have never had to change a battery. My biggest complaints are the 23mm band I night glow. A 22mm or 24 mm band would have been ideal. I also feel the night glow could be improved.

My dad bought me a citizen watch at the airport when I was 12. It was digital/analog and also told the temperature. I couldn’t believe my luck! Over the years new watches came and went and for around 30 years the citizen watch sat in my drawer untouched. A few weeks back I found it again and put a new battery in it. One of the great things about Citizen is that they seem to have more sapphire crystals at lower prices than other companies, at least from what I've seen. Ben has, hands down, the best watch channel, however is missing the mark on Citizen. Like a lot of other Japanese brands, Citizen keeps the good stuff for their domestic market. They also focus more on the higher end and even has GS competitor called Campanola . Citizen is also one of the few watch companies that maintains control over their entire production process and develops their own movements. Even third party sales of Miyotas are not particularly cheap. Citizen is a dyed in the wool watch company and always has been. I hate so say it but Casio is primarily a calculator company that also makes keyboards and sometimes watches but never mechanical ones. Take that Ben. pew pew.

My first watch was the Citizen Blue Angel watch and I still love it years later. I have never had to change the battery and it radio syncs so the time is always correct. The two major complaints I have are the 23mm band and the night glow. A 22 or 24mm band and a better lume would give it a solid 10 for under $500 US dollars.

Funny thing about watch rankings is that they're based on personal views. They're not like computer builds that can be arranged according to objective measurements. If Ben thinks Citizen belongs to B rank, that's fine. I do appreciate the second look though. I own a Citizen Avion and promaster divers myself which I both adore and would put at A rank along with the rest.

Good video, Ben. I have owned quit a few Citizen eco-drive watches, and they have all been solid performers. I currently have one in my collection that I've owned for 11 years, with no issues except minor scratches and an a mineral crystal gouge. But the watch has always run fine and keep good time. I have another, the Calabria, perpetual time in gold and stainless, with a black dial and gold indices (that's one you should check out; 40mm with a short lug to lug-wears beautiful on my 6.25 inch wrist). I've owned that one for 7 years, and it still runs great. I just picked up a World-timer, GMT echo-drive, which is more of a tool watch, also very sweet. I think that there is room for improvement. I would like to see them start using more sapphire crystal placement on there models over $150.00 USD. If companies like San Martin can do it so can Citizen, Casio and Seiko. Which is another point. In all reality, I don't see a vast difference in the quality of a Citizen over a Seiko, or a Casio for that matter. I think it depends on the particular model of the brand your looking at, as with all things. Some will appeal to you and some will not. But overall, I think the big 3 Japanese watch companies are all pretty comparable, depending on the models your comparing. Some are great, and some suck. I feel the same about most Swiss and Chinese brands as well. Best regards, Mike

I've recently got an NY-0040 and must say it's placed me firmly in the Citizen fanboy camp whilst completely agreeing with your criticisms regarding their range. Most of their watches are indeed too large and their designs are indeed a little bland when viewed as a whole. I do however strongly urge you to get your hands on a black dial NY-0040, it's possibly the best automatic diver you can get in the sub £200 price point. It's ISO rated to 20atm with genuine Special Forces heritage with the Marina Militare (who internally tested the watch successfully to 500m) and looks so good in the flesh with that inky dial.

I have been very happy with the automatic Citizen C7 re-issue I bought (NH8390-20L). It's pretty much the perfect watch for me. The shiny dark blue dial (comes in some other colors as well) is absolutely gorgeous, it tells the time, day and date, and it works both in casual and formal occasions. It was my first automatic, so I was a bit afraid it would not keep the time very well, but so far it has been very accurate. The normal price for it in my country is 279€, which is not bad at all, but I got it for 199€, which is an absolute steal for such a good watch. It looks more expensive than it is, and the one in white and gold and a brown strap also looks very fancy, if that's more your style. The downsides would be no sapphire glass and only 5 ATM, but I'll probably just get some Casio for all my sports and outdoors needs.

The build quality, engineering and selection of Citizen watches is pretty much unmatched by any of its competitors on the affordable end of the market. In particular, their affordable dive watch range is excellent - 200m divers, both eco drive and autos for under 200 quid. The NY00 selection look good on small wrists (like mine) and were even used by the Italian Navy for 10 years. Quality watches!

In November 2022 I purchased my first Citizen watch, the Citizen Promaster Land Titanium. It is a JDM watch so I hard to import into the US, but it was worth it. Case diameter 39mm, sapphire crystal, blue dial, titanium bracelet, Eco Drive (I prefer automatic watches but decided to give it a try). The hands alligns nicely with the Arabic numerals and indices. This happened to be a model that has the radio controlled settings that only properly work in Japan, but there are a couple of work-arounds to use it in the US, and you can still set it manually which I orefer using. So far the accuracy is superb, and I'm very happy with the overall design. My only disappointment was that the week after ordering the watch in blue, I found the model with a green dial that I would have much preferred. I've considered selling the blue and using the proceeds to order the green, but I admit I do like the blue. Probably my biggest complaint about Citizen is that many of their watches have case diameters well over 40mm, which is too large for my small wrist. My other gripe is that too many of the dials are really busy with all the displays the have. I prefer a dial that's simple. The Promaster Land fit the bill. Ordering and having it shipped (I found this one at a shop in Spain) to the US ran $425 USD, which I found very competitive for what you get with this watch.

My late father's Eco-Drive (Calibre 8700) has been going for over 15 years non-stop. Whilst some Citizens do have failures in their recharging over time, that one has been solid as has most of mine. Definitely more reliable than my Tough Solar Casios. VFM I would say Citizen is excellent. During the time Eco-Drive dropped, we used to get many Seikos in for replacement "capacitors" as the Kinetic models would fail to hold charge after only a couple of years. I believe things have improved since then, but with the massive Citizen range, reasonable materials for the price and interesting movements (1000th of a second stopwatches way cheaper than a Tag!), I still rate them well. Their titanium models in particular are pretty hardy. I also have the BN0110-06E Super Titanium with thickened sapphire glass Royal Marines Commando one with a Kevlar band. Still going strong. 300M WR, 5 year warranty, good lume and shock resistance. I am no longer in the watch game but would recommend Citizen - as long as you are comfortable with mass produced watches having potential QC issues as you have seen. Just return it until you are happy.

God damn some of those comments were rude. Those people need to calm down, its just a silly watch tier video.

I have CITIZEN Promaster Diver BN0158-18X (green dial) and they are great quality just out of the box. Alignment, precise of manufacturing, feel of crown, real ISO certification, luminescene on level of much more expensive watches... Real deal breaker for that price! Definitely best price / value watch I've had. Really love them.

I have a solar citizen chrongograph, and in what it does, it is very good. Everything is perfectly aligned, seconds hand hits the markers 100% clean, which seems to be an issue in multiple watches novadays. Solar is great - you can leave the watch in a closet for few months, where it completely dies, but just few minutes in the sun light will make it come back to live. Mine has around 6 or 7 years now, works no problems, keeps great time and date.

Wow, I really like that Citizen, very classy piece. While I agree 38-42mm is better suited to a larger range of wrist sizes, your wrists are tiny, which amplifies the issue. Won't list all the models, but one standout model is the Nighthawk BJ7000-52E, head & shoulders above anything in the Casio Lineage range.

I feel the same about Citizen watches but I do own one, Citizen NH 8350-83L. It’s a beautiful 40mm blue sunburst dial watch that’s versatile for any occasion. It’s not that expensive and honestly a decent looking watch. If anyone wants to own a Citizen, I recommend that.

I totally agree that most Citizen watches are over 41mm. I have been searching to buy one myself but I have a very skinny wrist. I found 2 JDM models within the 38-39mm range. It is the PMD56(Eco-drive) and NB1050(Automatic). I would love to see you do a review on these watches as I am still making a decision to get one myself :)

I'm getting the NB watch. It looks fab, better than a Sarb, slimmer, and more accurate, better finishing

Citizen Eco-Drive watches are among the best value watches available, you just have to wait and buy them when they are on discount. The quality is really excellent and you don't have to bother with changing batteries, ever. So I would say for quartz watches, Citizen ranks in the S tier. Full disclosure: my two daily drivers are both Citizen Eco-Drive titanium and sapphire watches. And I love them.

I'm mostly interested in the field watch collection / Eco drives, how they look / perform & etc, but they're definitely not cheap. Idk if tier B is correct, but for sure they're not S tier in the affordable watch rankings. I'd say they could be an S, if we're talking about practicality price-to-performance. definitely more worth it than Seikos...

My Citizen BM8180-03E Eco Drive has served me well since 2-3 years ago, strap sucks, but I knew it before buying it. Replaced it with a Black Silicone Straps and it sits comfortably on my small wrist.

Citizen NY0040 or NY0085 should be enough of a proof that Citizen belongs in the A. Great true divers for smaller wrists despite the 42 mm (bezel is less + short lug to lug). Also, BM8180 should be right down your alley with its 37 mm. Overall the build quality is above both Casio and Seiko but I get that the design language is not for everyone.

I got Citizen AT8185-71E. It's black so it's a neutral/safe color. One can't ever go wrong with black & it's stunning! Especially during the day. Very satisfied with the purchase as I've never seen the design/layout in any other watch Limited Edition Exclusive SUPER TITANIUM™ HAKUTO-R - www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/product/AT8185-71E.html?cgid=exclusives#prefn1=bandType&prefv1=Bracelet&prefn2=gender&prefv2=Mens&start=7

Citizen make great watches for the price... They also make a good amount of "too big and bulky" versions as well. I think you had them in the right tier though. They have some work to do to get moved up.
