    Happy Saturday my glorious friends, this livestream was a bit longer than expected but there was a lot to cover. I wanted to make sure to encourage everyone to comment your thoughts here on the youtubes, as well as on our forums and reddit with what was discussed, I'm sure I sound like a broken record, but the feedback is very important. Lastly, I would like to point out that while the open seas will be open-pvp zones, there are still alternate methods of traveling between the two continents, including flight paths between coastal nodes, air ships between metropolises-ai and also a scientific node's vassal network's teleportation options (should that network extend across the seas or to nodes on islands), although none of these methods will allow the transit of materials or gatherables. Additionally, there will be healthy amounts of sea content within the coastlines of the continents that does not fall into the "open sea" area. It is important that the open seas represent the rewards and opportunity that cross continental trade provides, but also the riches of treasure that the seas offer, all come with risk and danger... Ashes will always double down on the core philosophy of risk vs reward. Hope you enjoy much love to you all.

    I'm sorry but that still doesn't explain why you decided to make the open seas open-PvP zones and I also don't understand why didn't you announce this sooner, since you said this was decided "several months ago". I'm really not feeling this change, because I can assure you that me and a lot of other people will abuse the hell out of the ocean players, I don't see how this makes the game better. Also, since the "official reason" for making the open seas open-PvP zones is the great rewards that zone holds, when can we expect rewarding places in land to also become open-PvP zones? I can't wait to gank the hell out of "PvE" players without the gatekeep of needing a ship.

    As far as I understand it, the flagging system is an anti-grief mechanic. Why is it necessary to allow griefing to make the Open Sea more dangerous/risky? Are there no other ways to make stuff more difficult/risky than allow for abuse? And where is the risk for the griefer when attacking a non-PvP player (these are the only players that the removal of the frlagging system adds to the pool of potential targets) on the OpenSea? You are basically presenting the griefers with awards without any risk. Not even other PvPers in the form of Bounty hunters... I do not understand the thought process.

    Remember: you are the only one to be blamed about your own expectations. No one has nothing to do about your expectation. This is one of the major problems in communities. I know, we get hyped, it looks super cool... but bear in mind there will be things we dont like and then people will start to trash it out on youtube and others will watch and be manipulated to think the same way and then we get a big bunch of kiddos crying. I really think AoC will be incredible. The passion these guys show are outstanding, but I keep in mind there will be things i wont like and make my expectations lower, so i can be positive and surprised when I play. If you expect too much, you can end up being sad.

    Three reasons from this update that add to my excitement: 1: Systems come first and graphics compliment the systems. Not the other way around 2: Without risk, what’s the point of getting a reward? Open seas being international pvp waters is a cool idea. I have my worries about the overall pvp system but I like the way Intrepid thinks. Who’s going to take the name “Blackbeard” first and name their ship “Queen Anne’s Revenge”? 3: Fast travel in many games has completely ruined world immersion. Intrepid seems to understand this, and the fact that they are ok with some players feeling like they won’t be able to play ashes because of a lack of convenience” features,” makes me respect this team and what they are trying to accomplish. To make a truly phenomenal game you can’t appeal to everyone.

  • @vekokrava1423

    @vekokrava1423

    If they are a lot of conveniences it would not appeal to everyone as well, so yea... Every game is like that. There is no reason to mention it because those that want convenience only have some issues, they either are spoiled or they treat games as a business model, wanting to rush everything. If however they don't have time to play game, then it is not problem for many of us, it is their problem and I think they should not play MMOs.

    @@Xyshina I have seen multiple of them. It's not so much about me believing their pipeline is inefficient, but rather scope and reworks pushing this game further into Star Citizen territory month by month. There also hasn't exactly been a precedent for a persistent, open-world sandbox of this scale in the first place. Other "attempts" have been either too low-budget like Darkfall and Mortal Online, outright scams like Chronicles of Elyria or still rooted too firmly in their themepark ancestry like Archeage (less so on initial release), maybe BDO and NW if you would even count them. Fact of the matter is 90% of what we've seen so far is disconnected from each other element (or just a concept) and combining everything into a coherent, whole game is gonna take a massive amount of work, which isn't actually going to decrease if they keep on expanding their release plans at an equivalent rate.

Every video update is something new and we've seen most of the systems in the game. This is leaps and bounds ahead of anything of this kind of scope and they've been insanely transparent.

    Yea, I feel same, every design he made is made with precise logic behind immersion, which is nice considering what previous MMOs since 2010 did, take for example gw2 - full PvE game, no open world PvP at all, boring events that get repetitive after 2 times, everyone is just running around map like chickens doing nothing smart, gathering is also such a bad design in gw2 and in other games too, I remember I could not get those items like claws or totems because it needed like 250 of those for 10 lvls of crafting or less, and I managed to farm on farming spot like 50 of them for 30mins, it was not how I used to farm in WoW, for example skinning, you go in spot - farm 1h get full bags and craft for 100 lvls, it was much more casual, but end game skinning was much more hardcore, you needed to complete instanced content in order to get materials, and you were not always lucky to get them. But main turnoff for me in gw2 was no open world PvP like in classic WoW... AoC has everything that MMO needs for immersion, GJ Steven!

Too often you see games that just try to cater to every type of player, but what ends up happening is every aspect ends up watered down and boring. Blizzard is the epitome of trying to be for everyone, which makes its games appealing to no one except a small minority. I think we can all agree that their games of recent have been lacking a lot of depth, simply because they have to water everything down to make those games accessible to as wide of an audience as possible. Some things in life - especially in game development - require an approach that isn't tailored to every single person's interests.

    Concerning Caravan's, what could be pretty cool, imo, is having a "train" of wagons, which would mean multiple caravans banding together to travel as one. It does create a big sack of gold running around, but the obvious benefit is that the protectors of each one can help each other out to hopefully ensure their protection. There might be groups or guilds of players notorious for lurking around a specific caravan's path or two at some dangerous to travel through chokepoints, and going alone against those bigger groups of bandits is always ill advised. You will likely only find so many people to escort you, as I imagine escorts cost you a bit of money, so banding together with other caravans may be interesting.

    I think seasons needs to change every 4 weeks rather than 1-2. I don't want to feel rushed every week to farm materials or do seasonal content. If this could be tested in Alpha 2 that would be great. As for the new map changes, if the map triples in size then it only makes sense that the server will feel 1/3 as full. I guess we will see in Alpha 2 how it feels, but in my mind it seems like server caps should be increased. Great job though! Looking forward to Alpha 2!

    Yeah, they could maybe even make it larger. But right now it fits nicely with player's count. If they plan to have 10000 people on 750+450 km2, then that makes population density of 8.3 people on 1 km2. Which is about 1 person per 100 metres. And 100 metres is usually a normal mid view distance. So that's good. Now considering the fact that most players will be around key-point areas, nodes, main quests, points of interests basically, then we can roughly increase this number by a tenfold. So you'd likely see around 1-20 players depending the area you are in.

    Thanks for another great development update. Also, thank you for being so genuine in front of a live audience. It's truly a rare thing with a game company of your size and ambition to be this open and communicative. It really makes me feel like video games can be an opportunity for bottom up social organization/community building in and outside of the game (I know you're not 'the bottom' but being willing to share so much with the fans and potential players empowers them to organize themselves!), rather than a more corporate approach that keeps the players at the complete mercy of the company.

That's a different server, though, it's not the same. Any characters we create before launch won't be usable at launch, as far as we are currently aware. With the oceans being larger it will be nice to see how the different ship types play out, having a super fast ship to outrun the larger pirate ships will be exhilarating! I know I've seen some people saying how they dislike open pvp areas and I usually do, but with all the ways that Steven has mentioned being a way to avoid entering those areas it should be fine. Our testing will reveal how it will all work, as we haven't seen naval combat yet so we don't know how fun or stressful it will be yet. Love all the other new information this week as well!

    I really can't get overly hyped as much as I like some of Steven's ideas. He gets into those "they always sound great on paper" ideas. For instance, the tone of the sentence "You have to travel an hour to get across the map" changes drastically from hour 50 to hour 500 when you're trying to help a friend with content. lol. And PVP/PVE balance and content almost always comes at the expense of the other so as hard as they try and incorporate both they end up with diminished communities a few months in. I truly hope he pulls it together in a surprising and refreshing way. I'm reserving too much judgement until the last stretch before launch when we can see these systems actually come together.

    Hey Ashes team, I have a few things to mention and hopefully it helps. A few of these might be answered already but I have been adding these as the video played out. Player character weight: Not the weight that they can carry, but the weight that you feel when your character moves through the game. A good example of this is a Monster Hunter character moving through terrain with a slight heft in the animation due to their weapon and gear. Animation and sound play a huge part in how a character moves through an environment. Will we see this depth for players while moving through the world? or are we gonna get the "floaty" fast paced movement system that WoW uses. Caravan limitations/Situations: Where can caravans travel? are they road only? Can caravans travel on boats? Can caravans be used as shields from combat or are they going to be brittle? With that question are they going to have weak spots and strong points and upgradable defences? Will caravans have interactive seating or standing points for defensible positions? Where do caravans go when they reach their destination? Are they visible to everyone when they are not being interacted with? or are they invisible to everyone else but the player? What interactive situations do caravans become at risk and what situations are they safe from pirating/bandit? (Personal vs World questing) Sound Design: I have noticed that game sound design can be a daunting task and has been limited in past games. With Unreals fantastic sound design implementations, will we "see" a more diverse sound environment for each area in respect to player interactivity? (ex.Will we have a more subtle UI with less noisy notification systems and less immersive breaking UI sound elements to distract form the current environment the player is within?) (Maybe limiting the UI sound cue notification until you reach a city as if receiving the latest news while in town rather than out in the wild.) Will there be sound dampening effects through terrain? (ex. Hearing a waterfall through trees as being muffled or hearing the waterfall but the volume is just lowered. These can be very different) Villain: The greatest heroes are compelled by an even greater Villain. With how previous MMORPG's, we have witnessed poor representation of what villains could be because of a lack of current world interactivity. Why does the villain make us hate them? What history do we as players have with the villain in question? How can we as the players be influenced by the actions of the villain? These have never been implemented in any MMORPG other than Guild Wars 2. The scarlet witch scenario where the home base of the hero is destroyed by her actions in a season. Some of the actions influenced the terrain and altered the creatures you encounter. This was so influential in the game that it is one of the most memorable villains I can remember in an MMORPG. Will there be a prevelant story for players to invest in to keep them morally involved as well as personally involved in fighting the villain. New World failed at this task, because they focused on open world mechanics over story. The whole story was told to me through the commercials and not in the game. in fact I had ne investment in the story because I new the plot from the commercials. Hopefully the writing team on your end has the understanding that a good story is 90% about the villain. The protagonist, the other 10%, is for the reader to relate to and become attached to, so when we discover the villains story we can be more invested in the interaction of them both. Give the players something they can attach to for the villain to take away either permanently or temporarily. Then have your end game content after that. Is this something you have discussed or have been looking at for a story in the world you are creating? Also, can players become villains? Purchased Packages: My only big concern is the cost of your packages. If I am subscribing to the game. (15$ a month) why are these packages over $100 for these cosmetics? Do these have unique perks? will they have advantages from a design perspective? Do the mounts and caravans come with tactical defences? why am I paying $350 for a package if on day 1 of your release you will have 4million+ subscribers paying $15 each month. the math is overwhelmingly in your favour for cost. So why sell these at such high prices? If these are purely aesthetic and possibly achievable in the future, why have such a huge cost for these items? if you sold these for $40 and gave everyone the opportunity to purchase the full package at this cost. You are not losing money, in fact, you are getting more money because everyone is able to purchase these unique monthly packages. Thats 4mill subscribers who just spent $40 plus the sub.. and you have now made even more than the potential 1000 whales who decided to buy the $350 package for that month. The value of your subscribers should always be put first. They are your long term investors. Get rid of the superficial cost and let it be more available. Provide your subs with what they need to enjoy the games mechanics. Reward your subs for being a part of the team for length amounts of time. (1 year, 2 year, 3 year, etc..) Provide those seasonal outfits and event rewards in-game for subs. Give us the option to acquire the gear in game that is better than anything we could spend actual money on. This is also why you shouldn't have expensive packages, you make all in game aesthetics less valued by purchasing the aesthetic that looks better than the in game gear. Nodes Advancement/Destruction: What can cause a node to be attacked? World events? Enemy types that attack in hordes? Players attacking the cities? are they instanced events that are scheduled (like New World) or open world and run by spontaneous player scheduling? player negligence for running node upkeep? What separates player and system responsibility for Node advancement and destruction? (ex. player base is reduced for a certain amount of time in 1 node area, due to events, and node loses a town or city because of this. Or players consistently passing through a node area due to missions but not settling there but sees growth of town due to "traffic.") Neglected node areas; will. they have increased enemy influence? (a reason for players to eventually go there) Can Nodes suffer from afflictions? what sort of upkeep do Nodes require to stay sustainable? Can players choose to not have a metropolis or will the system auto create it? Will players lose their house and house progress if node is destroyed? Will villains affect nodes? Can there be evil influenced player cities? Faction/Guilds: What sort of influence can guilds have on a node? Does having the largest guild mean you have to be the mayor of a node? Do factions have certain perks based on faction missions? is there a focus for advantage that factions can choose to pursue? or is it just dependant on the players to choose individual benefits within a faction? Do factions have a limit to how many can join? Do factions own houses? (FFXIV style?) Will housing areas be instanced or open world? thanks for taking the time to read this. cheers,
