    1:21:00 random giant monsters destroying ecosystems would make those random events so much more impactful. A player sees a monster tearing through an area and reports back to town. Players in the town gather together to slay the monster to stop it's effect on the land management score to save their node. Or a neighboring node leads a world boss to your node for it to wreak havoc on the land which forces your nodes citizens to kill it. Things like this would be amazing to experience of made possible.

Not to mention you're at least getting the materials from player destroyed ecosystems but a monster doing it leaves the players with nothing.

    An experience I had with griefing that stuck with me was in SWTOR. There was a PVP zone you had to pass through to get to a story zone. There were about 4 people camping that zone and killing people. I tried running past them, sneaking past invisible and they kept finding and killing me. I was frustrated so I asked for help in general chat. Next thing I know I had 15+ volunteers to escort me and they all hunted down and PK’d the players camping that zone. It turned a bad experience into a pretty cool one being able to get support from strangers to turn the tables on those griefers. Idk what the best way to implement something like this into an actual system would be. But allowing players to recruit allies or set bounties to get revenge against flagged PKers could take the sting out of it a bit.

    I have the same reservations. I am an older player, this game looks awesome and I have been following it for a long time, but I am not fast enough or twitchy enough anymore to really deal with other players popping in and attacking me MMO's anymore. I just die almost every time it happens now. I play games to have an enjoyable time, and me out in the wilderness messing with the game mobs and gathering stuff minding my own, and pvp players rolling up and just just attacking me me out of the blue is no longer fun. I played lots of that kinda of game in Ultima Online, Rift, and many other games over the years, but I just can't anymore. Still gonna follow the game and see how it all turns out, though.

    I never understood why the "older, Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your diplomatic tone and realistic expectations, but this way of thinking is just so alien to me. Because I tend to be a decently casual, low-to-medium competitive player myself, so I run into tryhards who outplay people in 1v1s for fun constantly, and I just don't understand why anyone would have their enjoyment of a game reduced by those occurrences. I just don't care, because I know that I can just...go back where I was and keep doing what I was doing. Or go do something else in the game. Or join a group to play more safely in. (Admittedly that last one is my most likely option since I am big into group-play, so it's a little easier for me, but the foundational stance remains the same either way.)

    @@TheHadMatters As I stated, I am a solo lifeskiller. And as you stated, you are a somewhat competitive group player. We can't get inside each others heads and completely understand why we enjoy different aspects of the same game, but we should be able to at least understand the differences that are there. I play an MMORPG to explore, to harvest and craft, to mindlessly grind mobs for hours and sell the loot and collect everything I can. Other people are just a source of world immersion and economy to me. I love it but I understand that it would probably bore you to tears because you are playing that same game to be social, whether it be facing challenges with your friends in a PVE setting like a dungeon or challenging others in a PVP setting like in a hardcore section of the map. We just have different needs and goals that the game is meeting. That's kind of the beauty of MMORPGs, you know? The best ones know how to balance all the playstyles and have them compliment each other. Maybe I'm supplying you with your high tier meals or breeding your fast mounts while you are going into heavy PVP areas to get rare armor I can buy from you. Just because we are different doesn't mean we don't equally add value to the game's world.

I really I appreciate your commitment to creating a new PvX/PVP experience that's enjoyable and risky, but not aggravating, and believe you will accomplish this goal. **Also a note to the community, be sure to be respectful in your debates with other people - there's been a lot of "well then this game isn't for you then" snobby-ness that will turn a lot of people off that might not understand what PvX even is yet - honestly I'm not sure AoC will fully understand what it will look like until it is tested and adjusted. As a gatherer/crafter in many games this looks awesome! I have a couple questions about gathering though. To start the surveying tool, would you be able to focus your search for certain resources? Like you place the tool in the world, then either there's a gui that lets you search for specific gatherables, or maybe you can give the tool a piece of whatever you're looking for, say X amount of iron ore, to scan for that specifc kind of material. EDIT: This was kinda addressed in stream (hadnt finished when posted this comment) but not exactly. Second question is a little simpler. Since there's gatherables that are only available during certain seasons, will there be any gatherables tied to weather events? Like a magma ore that can only be mined during storms/rain cause it's cooled down, or maybe crystal nodes that only show up at night cause they'll glitter in the moonlight. Side note: one thing that I've always wished a game would have that I think would be cool to consider (although might be to hard to do?) would be turning one resource into another via interacting with it with skills. Ex: Someone uses a flame spell or smacks a tree with a torch and the tree burns, then allowing you to gather charcoal instead of logs from said tree. Or maybe a warrior could use a class/weapon skill like a giant slash with a war axe or something to break/cutdown trees (although probably gathering less resources from it for not using the appropriate tool.) Has anything similar been considered? I have seen it on other games but it's usually on smaller scales. Although I can also see it conflicting with processing professions. Likewise it'd be pretty badass if there was a dragon running around in a forest burning down all the trees and turning them into something different instead of just getting rid of them.

    Feels like altering a resource in the wild with a player skill (Like shooting a fireball and burning a tree for charcoal or something) might be a little much for them to be thinking about this early on. Easiest thing will always be altering it at a crafting table or something. Definitely like your idea though! I hope its something they would be interested in adding once the game is more in a finished state.

    I will be impressed if you guys manage to pull off this ecological event system for harvesting. overhunting predators, which causes more prey to flourish? Rotating crops and being mindful of your impacts on an area's resource spawn? A lot of developers talk a big game when it comes to mechanics like these, but they either don't get implemented, or the execution is downright poor. If this kind of thing makes it into the game, this could be wildly cool. All-in-all, everything spoken about in this video sounds very promising. As a farmer and a PvPer, I love what I'm hearing. Keep up the good work!

    Group gathering sounds interesting! Personally I think it shouldn't necessarily be mandatory, whether the necessity for a 2-person saw could be circumvented by experience, or that it increases yield/decreases harvest time. Reason being, I like to gather materials as a kinda zoned out downtime after a hard day's raiding or PvP. It's nice to have that chilled alone time in what is otherwise a very busy game. Looking forward to seeing how it's implemented!

    Bigger rewards require more investment, not a big deal just go for the things you can. Though chances are high that resources like that will be the fodder of guilds anyway. Group play is always going to trump solo play when it comes to a game built from the ground up to encourage it.

  • @GavC-137

    @GavC-137

    @@bobtower66 yeah, I agree 100%. It's all about balance - a group prerequisite adds a layer of difficulty that relies on something outside of player skill, and that's a good thing. But to lock certain elements of the game behind a group requirement will occasionally lock out the more casual players. I don't suppose that in itself is a bad thing, but if it happens regularly in various aspects of the game, it will feel gatekeepy. Obv's it's an mmo, and that's to be expected - but in something such as gathering, which i've never seen any game ever require multiplayer to gather, could potentially remove the last stronghold of single player activity. Don't get me wrong - in principle, I like the idea (and the fact that AoC is pushing the boundaries of expectation and that is setting it apart from every other game ever) but I just hope that the group gathering principle doesn't lock content from solo-play. In years gone by, I enjoyed "flower picking" as a Nelf druid scribe - it was something I could just do without hassle once I had had enough of dungeoning.

  • @bobtower66

    @bobtower66

    @@GavC-137 main reason it requires a group to harvest large timbers or a guild to protect a cave to extract a rare ore is because the game is trying to set up the need for cooperation amongst players and scarcity of resources. The game has a clear defined set of goals on the systems the developer's are interested in. They are going for a flavour of old school gaming I haven't seen since the 90s when I use to play mudds. To say it's gatekeeping when it's the game they want to make and the game the players who have invested in were sold on seems a bit disingenuous. They have never once advertised this as single player friendly. There are activities you can do solo but a majority of the content they have shown like sieges, dungeons and the like is going to require groups. Solo games are great but this isn't one of those.

I have played Wow, EQ2, BDO, ESO, Eve Online, GW2, New World, Lost Ark, and many other MMORPGs. Come to think of it, I got a PHD in MMORPGs. By adding the best these games and others had to offer I feel that you will create something special. Please spend the time nailing down combat, crafting, gathering, raiding, group dinamics and the economy. I am a big fan of watching Star Citizen’s development but after 10 years I would like to have had more game loops in that game. Mounts and underwater combat like GW2 have is incredibly fun and I love the direction you are going with that to take it to the next level. Rift and GW2 random spawn events made the World come to life by bringing players together and not just having players run from theme park locations to locations all the time bypassing many thing like in other games. I cannot wait till Alpha 2 is ready to roll out. I really look forward to going back to my EQ2 days were grouping up and raiding was extreamly fun. From the looks of all the classes I just might be able to bring back those EQ2 Skirge the Dirge days in Ashes.

    I do have a suggestion for lumbering trees. When you chop down a tree I would recommend a secondary lumbering skill with like a saw to gather lumber from a chopped tree. It doesn't make sense to get 3 or 4 lumber from 1 tree. If the tree is on the ground it would make more sense to get 3 or 4 lumber from a section of the chopped tree... so maybe have scattered lumber branches , trunks etc ( that provide different amount of wood and lumber) after the tree has been chopped so that you can gather would be my idea so there's not too many chopped trees.... the lumber would fill a lumber satchel etc that has a hard cap that would prevent deforestation... yes deforestation is good but not to an extreme... You shouldnt be able to carry all the lumber from 1 tree in your satchel or device.Yes trees grow back but this would allow you to increase the amount of time a tree takes to grow back. Overall 1 tree should have more worth than a few lumber. It should have worth of having 20 to 30 lumber in total that requires processing that requires the same amount of time that it takes to aquire 20 to 30 lumber from chopping down the same amount of trees...to finish this off I would recommend a lumbermill to process wood for different necessities that are required for it.

  • @lluunitic

    @lluunitic

    Also chopping down 1 tree can provide more than just lumber. Let's say you chop down a tree... if you chop this tree down not only will it provide lumber but also maybe a maple tree will drop branches that provide maple syrup and apples scattered throughout where it landed. These items are scattered about so it would provide competition by the players as you said : risk. Imagine players pvping for lumber syrup, apples, cherries, and anything 1 tree provides. A tree has alot of worth and it should provide worth.

    I think the corruption system sounds great. The games that have opt out PvP don’t force their player base to become complete players in the game. The idea of having skirmishes over farming areas of world bosses sounds like a lot of fun if it is done well. I hope that unlike other games except Elder Scrolls online (that has some outnumbered PvP) Ashes won’t just be a numbers game in PvP. I hope a small group can outplay and win against larger groups if they play well.

(If that is something you have dabble with yet) I hear that it is easy to implement but can't find any developers talking about just how easy or maybe hard it is to actually work with. Thanks for being a company that is transparent enough that I feel comfortable just asking.

    Lot of good stuff. I specially like ability to offencively use gathering. In addition, I think surveying or max experience could provide ability to select the correct stones to mine, thus skipping the useless ones. However, I think the system should not create situation where you don't want your friend with you to gather resources or you need them to max out the profession first. That could happen, if there is limited set of nodes and person would get different amount of results from a single node, i.e., only experienced gatherer can join, because otherwise materials are lost. Instead, I would suggest that experienced player would create benefits for others, but every additional gatherer would always be beneficial. Even in a single case, the experienced player could tell which nodes you need to mine and the novice miner would mine what is told, but would provide the same amount of materials per node (but probably would be slower, thus worse alone than experienced player).

    Hope they line up the axe chops with where the tree actually breaks, and that the falling tree interacts with still standing trees, here it just passed right on through... would be very cool to have the axe chops actually take chunks out of the tree as a bit of a progress indicator and a nice indicator of which direction it will fall. Falling trees should probably also have the chance to break into multiple parts, make them seem more weighty and less bouncy

I have a question, since social interaction and multiplayer activities are essential to player experience in Ashes of Creation, what are the available communication systems that will be available between players in the open world? So what I’m saying is their animations are great for their dragons and for the future I hope you take inspiration from them. Also rdr2 horse as most know are the best in video games to date and for horse like mounts that have similar movement I hope animation and controls is handled similar to that aswell. Last thing is century is a very fast paced game so I hope borrowing from that while not making dragons so fast paced could be cool

    How would you combat someone "PVE griefing" your area? For example, you are grinding a rotation in a camp and someone comes in and starts over-grinding you and splitting the camp making it inefficient to grind. You kill them because it is your spot and they keep coming back and just not flagging to death grief you. So in that instance, the person that dies to the flag has zero penalties? I understand the penalties for the one making the killing but if they have no benefit then it is still griefing by the PVEr. Are there going to respawn timers? Ways to grind up your Karma and is there a way to protect your grind spot or do you give it up? Do we expect people to wait in line for a spot?

    One of the things brought up in this gathering update that seems pretty critical to economic balance and gathering speed was land management. As more resources are harvested quickly within a period, they will regenerate slower. If that is the case, will the Mayors of nodes be able to set limits on gathering within their node for specific resources to make land management more efficient? If a player chooses not to follow the land management rules set by the elected mayors (through the various node election processes) would they possibly build corruption and receive a bounty?

The only complaint I have about the gathering system is I would like to see axe indents in the trees as they are being chopped same goes for mining it would be cool to see cracks in the stone before the shatter.
