I made a corral many years ago from oil field pipe. (Bartlesville, OK) The posts were 2-7/8 tubing and the rails were 2-3/8. Rather than create saddles on the rails, I cut a bunch of one foot 2-7/8 pieces (w/chop saw) in the shop then split them in half by creating saddles. The 2-3/8 rails were flush cut to the approximate length. The 2-3/8 fit inside the 2-7/8 saddle pieces and it made the fitting and welding a lot easier. Saved a lot of measuring and grinding.

When building pens, I use spring loaded latches installed on the gate in the same manner. You can get by without using the catch on the post side if the pipe is a good diameter say 3 1/2" or 4 1/2". I smash a small piece of pipe into an oval for clearance up and down, cap inside with 1/8" to keep hornets out, recess it in upright, weld around outer portion, and grind flat to the big pipe. Saves money by not buying catch side and leaves it looking super clean. Love your vids, I always learn something useful!

I'm surprised you don't use the green laser tape measures. I use them anytime I need to fabricate fence panels, or anything that needs to sit in-between 2 objects. They are insanely efficient, reliable, and eliminate the need for a 2nd hand for measurements in most cases. They're especially nice on really long runs where a tape will bend/ bow and not give you a dead nuts measurement. Maybe one day you can try them out, the future is here :D

Great work! I’m an amateur and usually only work on my own stuff and love learning other techniques. On those long gates and single strap hinges, I’ve had several of them crack and break welds under the weight and working pressure. I like to add a second strap welded to the side of the tubing part of the hinge and the gate post. Helps add an lot more strength, especially on the longer gates.

Nice work. Love your attention to detail. The slam latches are great for cattle corrals. If you throw the gate hard enough, it will skip past the latch - which can be helpful when working cattle. Curious why you hung the last gate lower than fence height, which essentially makes the entire fence that height.

We are based in the UK & would have pre-fabricated all of these sections/panels & sent them away for galvanising (& possibly powder coating) in bolt together/portal format, rather than weld the whole installation on site! What coating is the client going to put on this metal work? those gate hinges seemed tight enough in the video, give them a couple of months of exposure to rain & oxygen & they are going to get even tighter. ive never seen panel work in a residential or commercial way done like this before. very interesting. Cheers, Louis

One additional method, to put ing brackets on brick is to use the kit we’re you drill a hole and put a plastic socket in to the brick to-accept the screw . I find they don’t crack the brick or cement block because the plastic gives a little and wedges the screw in place.

Great video Austin. Something to consider; the slam latch was placed under the horizontal rail of the gate which should be fine; however, the welded wire panel was added to the gate later requiring the person operating the gate to have to reach over the rail/panel to grab the slam latch handle. Placement of the latch above the horizontal pipe member would result in use of the latch to be more user friendly since doesn't have the pipe or panel as an obstacle to reaching the latch handle. Just something to consider for future slam latch installs. Thanks Again, Austin!
