Austin Ross

Austin Ross

I want to be your in-between guy. Your friend and first "in," on your way to making rig welding or pipeline welding your career. You know how to weld. Now, you just need the secrets.

Hi, I'm Austin. A family man, rig welder, and pipeliner. Eleven years ago I didn't know squat about pipeline and what it took to be a pipeline welder. Since then I have learned how to not only live this lifestyle but how to succeed in it. Here I will teach you what I know in hopes that it will save you a lot of time, money, and hardship.

I believe truly finding success in this industry means you have to learn not only your skill, but how to make the lifestyle work for you and your family. No more going in blind and learning the hard way. I will lay it all out for you ahead of time so you will feel prepared and educated.

At Jeffboat they would pump air into the barge tanks, or tow boat tanks, get up to a certain pressure, then spray it down with soapy water. If you moved up to certified 1'st. class welder itwm was automatic 2'nd shift. I liked 1'st shift, so, I stayed tacking, 3'rd class, and would get an automatic half my time at 2'nd class. I don't remenber the rod size, but, flat welding, with the thick rods, was basically just dragging the rod. It did make a pretty weld. If your machine was set correctly, the slag would generally just lift off on it's own. Also, the autimatic machine welders could lay down a extra wide beautiful weld. They ran off fed spools of wire. I really felt for the 1'st class welders who had to weld jnside a sidebox, or hull, stern. Your basically inside a metal box part of a barge, or tow boat, sometimes only one hatch, which you put a blower on top of, but still, the darn smoke would get so thick you could cut it with a knife. Also, part of the reason I never upgraded to 1'st class. Welding outside in fresh air isn't so bad. You get inside a steel box, it's a different animal. After 10 hour's, blow your nose on a rag, and you know what I mean.

Was so cool to get to meet you and thank you for including me in your video @Austin Ross. Was a super cool opportunity to talk to you and see the rig and even film for the video! Peanut and Danny and Corey are amazing teachers, I’m learning a lot. If anybody is interested in the school in the comments, take it from me as a full time combo pipe student. It’s the best school around the area. It’s so easy to get funding why wouldn’t you go if you’re interested in the field. The instructors and the facility is top notch. And the simulator I helped build is pretty dang awesome if I do say so myself. Check out American welding labs you won’t regret it, thanks again Austin super cool to be included in one of your videos!

I really like your video, but had trouble seeing (video too dark) the 7018 re-striking part. Guess if weld stopped to restart the 7018 tip has to be electrically "clean" for contact. Would like to hear how it was cleaned for restarting. Thanks for video!!

I have worked in a steel shop in Tulsa for around 30 years. I have worked with a lot of Tulsa Welding school graduates. NONE of them were welders. Or weld inspectors which is a class they offer that adds many $1000 to your tuition. The amount of dept I hear from these guys lately blows my mind. I strongly recommend skipping Tulsa Welding school…

So true, I find that not to many people want to teach . I'm not sure if it's because of a time crunch or they just can't be bothered. So I pick up what I can and teach what I learn when I can. Great vidya ave a good weekend.✌

I've already stepped up to do my duty. Went to college for Networking and Cybersecurity then changed majors in June 2020. I'm in a fabrication shop here in North Carolina. Learned how to run a cnc plasma and now Im the plasma guy at work, but I still feel like a rookie next to a former emergency nuclear repair welder, a former underwater welder and cell phone tower welder and a 25 year plasma/ press brake operator, even after 2.5 years with them. They're an extension of my family by now though.

I am one of the first students that they have had at there first location before they had the piping course, it was just structural one of the things that I have learned. Don’t be scared to reach out to other Welder and call places and see if they have test take the test. If you don’t pass least you gave it. Your best shot I’ve been doing pipeline, and I have started my own business on the side. I’m happy that I was in from being on the road. I was able to come over there to the welding competition and see everybody welding meet you and the other welders.

I really enjoyed this outstanding video. I worked 18 years on heavy equipment and 24 years in heavy industrial maintenance. I am always trying to engage young people to get into some type of trade. The two problems i see with the youth are that they are scared to move away from home, and they have no concept of what a trade is. It is like trying to explain color to a blind person. There is a lot of talk about the next generations not wanting to work. I dont care what generation you belong to, at the end of the day it all boils down to the facts of life, it takes money to live, and it takes some means of generating income to make it in life. At some point in life, the generations have to wake up and get a move on. By having a solid foundation in some trade, you will always have employment. I would recommend schooling in at least 3 related trades.

This was an awesome video Austin. Changed my mindset on teaching competition within the school system . Too many teach that you have to win at any cost. Instead they need to teach bettering yourself by learning from others while competing and learning better methods not being the BADDEST out there. The interview of the instructor was great . Thanks for sharing with us, keep up the great videos and the work you do. Fred.

exactly I see welding jobs posting regularly but the pay is 20 to 25 an hour which doesn't cover everyday life costs. I see the same thing in Trucking schools claiming you can make 6 fig salary those are few and far between. colleges did the same BS pushing for grads to enter college and go in debt. how about companies hire at 20 hr and train that makes more sense.

  • @rigo8823
    @rigo882320 сағат бұрын

$25 a hr is the new $15 a hour now. Schools can keep pushing welders but, it’s not going to change economy. Young men don’t have the same work ethic like guys 20 years ago.

Haven’t watched this yet, but in my few years in the trades, 25+, unless you have an outfit paying the tab, ALWAYS apprentice over school. Better to get paid for learning instead of paying to learn. Plus, when you learn laying in the mud instead of standing at the jig, you don’t have helpers with LITERALLY miles of experience more than you watching you lay dog turds on a joint because you’ve never struck a spark with the sun in your eyes before…

I would love to find out who is needing help. We have allot of later work coming up but could use some now work. Most things I see out there are 26 to 35 and hour. There is no way I can run my truck on that. I can't afford to run my truck under 75 an hour and that is pushing it. They talk about everyone needing welders but no one wants to pay for a welder. Most jobs we do are bid jobs and we have had to lower our labor rates up to 60% for some people just to land jobs. When your trying to do a job even for 5k a week, after you pay for fuel, oxy and acetylene, grinding discs, wheels and such, rods, equipment. There isn't much left and people only want to pay 30 an hour. It doesn't work. But that's what we are facing.

As someone who has outclassed most old heads I come across I can both admit most people my age are lazy AF. BUT the pay is 70% why retention is dropping of the few who are joining. Shop work outside of aerospace (top 10% shop weld work) is topping out at $25/hr Anything more than that they want 3+yrs with the company. Only that doesn't even cover living expenses properly, and since retail work and ups are starting to pass that rate it's starting to become an incentive to LEAVE the industry.
