Depersonalization Symptoms | Derealization Symptoms | Are They Trauma Symptoms or Anxiety Symptoms?
In this video, I share whether depersonalization/derealization symptoms are trauma symptoms or anxiety symptoms. Several people teach that depersonalization and derealization are anxiety symptoms and in this video I share whether or or not that is accurate. Make sure to subscribe, like, comment, and share.

5shiftsmasterclass.coachjorda...
Welcome. My name is Jordan Hardgrave. I once suffered from debilitating trauma, depersonalization/derealization, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, health anxiety, social anxiety, existential anxiety, and many more things that wasted many years of my life. I was tired, frustrated, and gave up hope that I could ever find healing. To be honest, I didn’t even know I was traumatized. My symptoms became a part of who I was. They became “normal”. Many years ago, after throwing together all the tools I could find online (most of which didn’t help), I accidentally stumbled upon a body-based method that brought me permanent healing. I figured, “If I apply all these tools at the same time surely one will work”. Little did I know at the time that hidden within the dozens of tools that didn’t work, I had discovered body-based tools that DID work, which skyrocketed my results and got me to being 100% symptom free.
When I was suffering I made a commitment that if I ever could become symptom free (I never thought I actually would, lol), that I would spend the rest of my life helping others heal. I spent tens of thousands of hours and dollars studying under the top trauma and mental health experts in the world, as well as constantly perfecting my method until it would bring rapid results no matter how long someone had been suffering. I based my method off evidence-based tools as well as the work and understanding of experts such as Dr. Steven Porges, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, Dr. Peter A Levine, and Dr. Joseph LeDoux just to name a few.
Yes, here I am. Like Forest Gump fulfilling his promise to Bubba that he would become a shrimp boat captain, I am at your service. :) I created the Trauma Free Academy as a resource to help you find the healing you have been searching for but have only been met with confusion. I don’t want you to have to make the many mistakes I made that wasted so much of my life. I want to show you how to get to the root of your symptoms instead of managing them for years but never getting to 100%. If you’re ready to go on this journey with me, follow me. Also, I have created tons of paid resources as well if you’re wanting more specific and personalized help. Here is what we have to offer:

    As someone that suffered through dpdr I feel this is a very big factor in why people kill themselves. If I didn't find jordans channel and bought his course idk that I would be here anymore. My therapist didn't even have a clue of what I was talking about. I felt alone and scared out of my mind. I did not want to kill myself but I absolutely did NOT want to continue living with dpdr. And if I didn't find that hope I just might have ended my life. It is HORRIFIC!!!! ITS THE WORST THING SOMEONE CAN LIVE WITH!!!!!! I'm forever grateful for getting through and overcoming dpdr. My message to anyone going through this is PLEASE DONT EVER GIVE UP!!!! You will feel real again!!!!

    I’m going to kill myself. No one understands. How can people not realize how horrible this is and how come not even doctors know what this? This is why I’m killing myself. I’m mad at humans for not giving a fuck about something so debilitating. Let’s be honest, there is no cure, this is how it’s going to be for the rest of my life. And I don’t want to do it anymore.

    I’ve suffered from GAD & Health Anxiety for 27+ years, the past 3 years I have severely struggled with DPDR 24/7 so I know first hand how uncomfortable it feels.. I’m at a stage where my symptoms are decreasing but mentally I’m struggling with brain fog, memory issues and even worrying that I have brain issues causing my dissociation, not being able to speak properly etc.. DPDR is real and is so scary to live with 🖤

    Existential anxiety accompanied by DP/DR is by far the worst “experience” a human being can go through. Thank you Jordan for enlightening us on the scientific reasoning behind this symptom. The biggest help for me recovering was understanding what was actually happening. It’s an excruciatingly slow and gradual recovery process but looking back at the past few months, I am so thankful I’m not where I used to be!

    Thank you so much! I went through multiple major traumas and prolonged stress over a period of years and was never able to fully recover between these events. I emerged a completely different person with repetitive thinking, overwhelming fear, insomnia and have ultimately gotten into a freeze state where I’ve become detached or disassociated from my body, relationships and environment. I was once the most vibrant, social, interactive and organized person and I’m distressed by my current state. I’ve been in therapy at different times over the course of my lifetime but never was DP/DR mentioned. Today is the first I’m hearing of this and it really resonates. Understanding this may be the first step on my path to recovery!!

    I'm so comforted after watching this video. I can't believe I'm not the only one who will literally smack myself because of how numb and out of body I feel. And the sandwich thing, oh my gawd I will stop eating because it'll trigger me, just like you said, your tounge gets numb and if I push on and keep eating, I'll fall into a DPDR anxiety. When I was younger I had health anxiety as well. I had anxiety at early ages because of bullying. And not to mention the way you explain how your reality alters, I had therapy and they told me it was anxiety and PTSD all combined, then I was told BPD was mixed all in it. I appreciate you being here and posting this video for everyone, it's just here for free and I'm so greatful.

    I’m living proof that it is not anxiety based just as you described. Prior to dp and dr I never experienced sever anxiety. Saying it’s anxiety based can add more stress to the situation. However I would say some methods for battling anxiety can help. Just know that if you are going through this you WILL get out of it. I had it bad for what seemed like an eternity (actually 2 years). All I have to say is it is a real eye opening experience and the perspective on life that you gain afterwards is like no other. It is a new appreciation for life, emotions, etc. that many others won’t understand.

    Thank you: now I finally know what’s happening to me. I’ve been searching and searching trying to figure out what’s going on with me. I feel so detached and had a psychosis of sorts and now deal with absolute terror and detachment for the last year. I feel like I’m going absolutely INSANE. I have never been suicidal but this has made me want to die. I have two absolutely precious small children and they are MY LIFE. I have no reason to kill myself. But because of my trauma and now THIS disassociating of reality and panic attacks all day long, I’m dealing with I don’t know what to do to get better. I hear all the time I just have anxiety, and here’s a prescription. This is not.. It’s miserable. Thank you for finally making sense to my brain that isn’t making much sense at all anymore. 😖

    GREAT VIDEO, gonna pass this to my family. Sometimes it’s hard to explain to them. I went through a lot of traumatizing events and my brain checked out! 1 yr and half of these horrible sensations! And finally I’ve noticed that my brain is shutting off this mode. Once in a while it will hit me or especially at night but I feel like I’m starting to see the light. I totally understood when you said “ppl will connect this to anxiety” and you know how anxiety feels and you know it’s not just anxiety....but they don’t get it no matter how much you explain it. Thank you for not making me alone through this journey ❤️

    It’s taken some time for me to try to figure this out and I think I am in denial that I am experiencing or have this mental disorder that is crippling my life. When just the thought that this could happen to me is overwhelming and making it worse. Sometimes it hits me like a freight train and I feel so panicked and dissociated that it’s the worst feeling ever just complete fear beyond belief. I’m my body eventually relaxes and I can begin to think straight again and it dissipates slowly... what a weird thing this is. It feels a lot like a response to a panic attack. It’s hard to describe. Thank you so much for this video. Anyone who says weed can't traumatize you is dense. Once you want to "exit" your high the fight/flight response kicks in. Well there is no way to fight the high, no amount of thinking or trying to feel normal again will work. The flight response in useless in that situation too because no matter where you go to in the physical world you will still be high. The freeze response is the only one left. As far as your nervous system knows the weed you just smoked is a tiger trying to kill you and no matter what you're not getting away from it and so DPDR ensues. Hope this explanation helps.

    I had it from some out of body trip that didn't make sense, this was caused by a full non stop time loop, even my consciousness and awareness got stuck in repeat, those around me where saying the same thing over and over, everything physical repeated, a good loop forward and backwards, even when I remembered it happening before It would hurt and that would get over ran by it all over again, my spirit is the best way to describe it which was my consciousness broke it, and it was not easy, I forced my self out of that loop, I don't know how... but then a even worse thing happened while in spirit, which involved a very deep story, time here was frozen, I went to the sky in short, and some how after a very long time of being there and seeing some odd things I came back and was so convinced I was never going to be back in human life again, that earth was gone, my life was gone everything I knew, well that is far from the worse thing that I had figured out... but as I luckily got back into this amazing body, every since then to age 17 I was in shock, non stop DP and plus... randomly, I figured out how to stop it, I joined the army and never had it happen again, well minor times recently now that I try to dig it all back up and understand it, make sense of it. Never last longer than a few moments, it's normal to feel this too, if I drink to much or if something odd like my body reacts to laughing gas at the dentist my awareness goes super human and a depressing relaxing drug triggers something beyond what doctors or science claims to understand. I didn't know what it was when I had it bad, I was a teen, until recently I was also confused of it it was anxiety or panic attacks or something else, it did make me constantly paranoid that I might have a mental illness maybe like schizophrenia, but it's not. I found out by many people that I have Asperger's this is one reason that it's there, but mostly due to the traumatic event that I had when I was 13... I still don't know what this was... or how to explain it... to me it does mean something. I have figured out what value system is, I define everything in life that I know and learn cores of things all based on all of this. It might be good and bad together, but the good thing is this DP is programmable, and if we look at it closer we can figure out that understanding it helps us get closer to solving things like pain or how wounds operate. I have hints on these also, but I won't go into detail there, I should write a book about all this like you did... though Maybe when I am older. I have been prepping a meta physics book for the last 6 years, I wont release it or finish even till I have physical evidence to describe every bit of it, I am close, but I might rest on this till I am 50 or older, currently 32 near your age with interesting 12 years of experience in the harshest environment of the US army, though I haven't had a harsh DP attack since I was 17...

  • @coachjordanhardgrave

    @coachjordanhardgrave

    3 жыл бұрын

    It depends on which phase of trauma you are in. I lay all this out in my dpdr course at dprecovery.com. There is state 1 mild stress, state 2 high stress, state 3 moderate trauma, and state 4 severe trauma. In state 3 moderate trauma one may alternate between fight or flight symptoms and freeze symptoms such as dpdr, but if they become completely overwhelmed and enter state 4 severe trauma (complete numbness and dissociation), fight or flight symptoms shut off. But dpdr are always produced from the parasympathetic nervous system and are not produced by the sympathetic nervous system. So, in state three moderate trauma one is experiencing fight or flight symptoms (anxiety) AND DPDR, not DPDR FROM anxiety. That’s a very important distinction. 🤙🏻

  • @phillango4207

    @phillango4207

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@coachjordanhardgrave thank you very much for that explanation. I take from that, that I am in state 3 as I have dpdr AND anxiety which fluctuate day on day to varying severity. The overwhelm point after years of health anxiety and deep rumination on a lot of issues was a panic attack I had 6 years ago when hungover which when the attack had ended dpdr immediately followed and has been with me since. Caffeine and high sugar foods make the anxiety and dpdr a lot worse so I have now quit both. I stopped drinking alcohol 4 years ago for the same reason. Exercise eases symptoms but not to a point where I ever feel like I did before the panic attack. I have overcome dpdr once before as a teenager when a bad weed experience set it all off but 9 months later I completely recovered after understanding how it was fuelled. This time round it seems insurmountable!

    Hi Jordan!! So, I find my DPDR & anxiety s so much worse when I’m sitting around at home because of lockdown. Do you know why this is?? When I’m at school and keeping myself busy, I barely feel the anxiety or DPDR. Distracting myself from the Anxiety helps a lot, but when I’m at home I find I worry about it more, and question find myself questioning reality more often.

    I feel like this for Months now... I'm an HSP too so I dont know if that just makes everything worse... I hate these extreme existential thoughts because I used to believe in God and now i dont even know in what to believe in even though Im going to a bible school right now and want to grow in faith. I am so scared because I used to be so empathetic and enjoyed so many little things in life but now everything feels so useless? I lost my meaning of what to live for and the end goal because I cant believe in the afterlife or heaven etc. And I always feel so lonely because i dont see many christians suffer from severe DPDR or taking mental health seriously in church. Life seems so pointless rn and I dont want that anymore. I have a wonderful family and husband but feel so disconnected from them and it hurts so much. Maybe someone here feels the same.

    Is it normal to be experiencing emotional numbness as well with DPDR? I’ve always felt physically numb, but last year things really went downhill for me and I lost complete sense of emotions, I can’t feel happiness, anger, sadness, frustration, fear, nothing, I’ve been like this for 10 months and it’s tormenting, is it another symptom of DPDR, or is it something else? The only thing I’m able to feel is light anxiety in my gut and around my body, but I can’t mentally/psychologically “feel” the emotions, it’s like my brain is refusing to feel emotionally but my body still reacts to situations.

    I’ve been having dpdr ever since December 2020 and now it’s February 2021 and I’m still not recover yet. It’s so scary. I feel like I’m alone in my mind. I feel like my body is not my body and I’m soo out of it. Everytime I think about it, it triggers me and I get so scared. I kept on having a thought that I’m gonna die soon because of this. I’m just so scared.. I get panic attacks and I tried to do certain things to stop thinking about it but it’s not helping me. Then I go to sleep at night with anxiety which is so bad. I just want to feel normal again. 😔

    Had a narcissistic sociopath of a dad and his mom and my grandmother was the same. Because of them I've let people abuse me all my life. And the catalist was my parents divorceing, my other grandma getting cancer and my uncle threatening to kill us if they divorced ( all this happened at the same time) wile me and my mom stayed at his house cause we had to. I was there when he strangled my mom and came after her with a knife. And then, I coped with years of weed, alcohol and toxic relationships. And guess what? I'm strong, kind, determined, and I absolutely love myself. It's been 4 years for me :) but I'm gonna hit the ground.

    Jordan, I bought your programme and the progressive muscle relaxation techniques you outlined didn't really help unfortunately. I have tritchotellomania (linked with OCD), intense earworms, visual snow and other visual symptoms linked with hppd. I have problems with obsessively monitoring my breathing and my eyes (thinking about the way I blink) and the progressive muscle relaxation you espouse (every 5 minutes) made me worry more about my bodyily actions. Have you any other advice for people who suffer from dp/dr?

  • @coachjordanhardgrave

    @coachjordanhardgrave

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey, Conor. I hope you are well. I don't teach to do progressive muscle relaxation every 5 minutes. Progressive muscle relaxation is a powerful exercise to relax one's body and also build the felt sense, but it's good to do it only a few times a day, even once a day. What I do teach is to relax muscle tension for 1-3 seconds several times during your day to keep your parasympathetic nervous system online to prevent sympathetic nervous system dominance. Your focus should be on life, your goals, personal development (external), while occasionally shifting internal (felt sense awareness of body) and relaxing your tightened muscles for a few moments, then returning back external. If you were doing PMR every 5 minutes then that's why you were obsessive about your body. Self regulation should only take 1-3 seconds so thus there isn't time to obsess. Take care!

    Mine is 100% tied to my heightened times of anxiety. I only experience it when my panic attacks are more frequent. My doctor and therapist agree. I love your channel and takes but I think this is a bit of a dangerous take. Telling someone this DP state is anything other than a symptom of anxiety (which most all docs agree) can make them think they’ve actually gone crazy. Which in fact, escalates their DP and anxiety. Again - like your channel and I think you do so much good but i feel this is a not at all helpful video for those of us who suffer.

    I think after re-watching this. Its just a vocabulary difference. Its severe anxiety yes but it stems from fight or flight which is in essence what anxiety is rooted in. I agree “just anxiety” in no way can describe the feeling. It’s horrific. But its a severe symptom of prolonged anxiety. I have also had anxiety for 22 years and talked to and researched MANY authors and docs. Prolonged anxiety has a new slew of symptoms. Your nervous system is essentially exhausted. Again - keep. up the GREAT WORK!
