🚆 Delivering petrol in changing weather conditions (Cab Ride Switzerland | Weil a. R. - Niederglatt)
Another year is coming to an end, once again a perfect opportunity to say a few words. Thank you, dear viewers, for enjoying and liking the rides we create. Thank you for your comments, thoughtful questions and your continuous support. This year, 24 new videos have been released. They feature new routes, new rolling stock, new lines and even a historic and two night rides. Have you seen them all? We didn't quite hit 30k subscribers, but hopefully very soon. Spread the word and if you haven't already, consider subscribing! It is free, it is a great motivation and most importantly, you get to see beautiful new cab rides regularly.
We won't let this year go without a special cab ride! Welcome aboard this freight train from Weil am Rhein in Germany to Niederglatt in Switzerland. It came a long way from northeastern Germany to the Swiss border, where we will take the train and drive it to its destination. Loaded with petrol, or gasoline for my American viewers, it will be put into storage tanks and then distributed further from there. We start off under German signalisation and rules, a quick stop in Basel-Muttenz marshalling yard to change the locomotive to Swiss systems and then continue further. We are used to weather changes, however sun, clouds, rain and snow in just one trip is not the standard. It also is a bit of a challenge for us, since rain and snow affect the adhesion ("grip") of the train. That is part of our job and what we are trained for. Please sit back and enjoy the diverse trip at a slower pace.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year! I hope to see you again in 2022 with many new trips and things to see. Wishing you all the best!

All the characteristic TRAXX noises: stepping up through the notches on the inverter starting off with a heavy load, and that creaking and groaning as you go over pointwork that sounds like Darth Vader is behind you in the cab
One of the most scenic gasoline runs I have ever seen.
Another amazing journey to watch, certainly interesting with the changing weather conditions throughout
I'm a train and I approve this video! Choo choo!
Great videos - all of them. Thanx for sharing.
That little animation when driving next to the famous beer brewery is just perfect haha
Best wishes to you for Christmas and the new year. Looking forward to more amazing cab rides in the future. Mike.

Eisenbahn-Emotionen!
Enjoyed the ride along and especially observing system that your railway uses for conducting rail operations in a wide varieties elevational changes even on a short delivery run. Nice!!!

It is actually very easy for the ears. The camera just picks up the sound very well.
nice 👍
Really enjoyed the ride through into Switzerland and seeing the other-side of life there, backs of houses and factories, industrial sidings and rails leading into factory sites. It would have been interesting to see what speed the train was doing at various times, given the cargo I doubt if it was very fast. Excellent, the nearest to a holiday I have had this last 18 months.

The sound of the turbine, or whatever that noise is, would drive me nuts. It was extremely loud when you first started but dissipated when you changed whatever it was you changed early in your route. The graffiti in Switzerland of all places is appalling. The number of turnouts, i.e., moving from one track to another, was done at amazing speed. In my day in the long ago with the Southern Pacific, we didn't take turnouts that quickly. Good stuff. Nice to see a run not so full of long tunnels. lol. Rangierbahnhof is huge!

Would be nice to see this in a sort of Chapters setup. That way people can remember where they left off, or find a section they missed, and go right to it. Volodymyr has it timetabled already; just note the start and end points for that section in the chapters and include start and end timestamps.
Merci euch „Piloten“!
This was a very good video and I really enjoy the freight ones since the lower speed gives additional time to enjoy the view as it passes. When you were almost to your destination, I heard the in-cab system say "afb, afb" and wondered why it was doing this? AFB is usually set up before leaving your original point, were you, by chance, turning it off so you would have control of the train as it went into the sidings.
@RailwayEmotions
You didn't include a timestamp, so I don't know what moment you're talking about. We are free to turn the AFB on and off, we have control over the train either way. AFB is just a help and does not operate automatically.
😎👍

Good! Do you have a cabride Basel - Pratteln - Olten please?
Thank you for your excellent videos. On thing I noticed was that in Switzerland a lot of railway crossing gates have chains hanging down from them. You can see an example in this video at 1:27:08. Does anyone know what they are for?

Hi, I really enjoy your videos, and I don't think I've missed one this year. Could I ask a question though please? At the start of this video it said that the braking ratio was 60%. What does that mean?
@RailwayEmotions
A figure that tells how fast a train can come to a stop. Modern passenger trains have between 135 - 180%, freight trains can have as low as 50%. Braking ratio therefore defines the vmax for the whole train and for all segments of the route.

@@RailwayEmotions Many thanks for that.
Second curious question. What's involved when you 'change the locomotive to Swiss systems' at the marshalling yard in Basel? Clearly it's not just a question of pressing a few buttons!
@RailwayEmotions
Shutting down the locomotive, changing the pantograph and the train protection systems and then testing the now active system. Systems usually have to be checked at least once a day and since they weren't in use, we're doing it right after transitioning.

@@RailwayEmotions So from Weil a.R. up to the stop at the marshalling yard, the line is equipped with PZB? Interesting bit of hybrid track then, combining the Swiss signals with the German protection system. Sections like that must be a real headache for rail designers.
Happy New Year from California. Thank you for sharing a fine video. Could we have a translation of the audio warnings for signals and other conditions? Or point to a website for us language impaired types, thank you.😉

@@RailwayEmotions Thank you, very informitive. However, I was imprecise. What I was after is the, I think DB, vocal alerts. There are a series when the engine is reset for the SBB territory in Basel yard. I have heard the same alerts with a female voice in cab videos on the Austrian railways(I think). Thank you again for your time.
@RailwayEmotions
@Ted Moreland No, your question was precise and my answer is referring to just that. They are basically just spoken confirmations after the driver has acknowledged a signal, or transitions the train protection system to another country. In Switzerland, it is beeps, on (most) German locomotives it is a voice confirming the action.

@@RailwayEmotions Hey, thanks for your reply. I am not really a railway professional (yet) but a railfan who likes to get information about trains. I don't really know a lot about the DB class 185 but now, I will have to research on it to satiate my curiosity. I have always liked the TRAXX family of locomotives for their body design but I don't know a lot about their internal mechanics and specifications.
Thank you for you videos. I have a question. In the U.S. trains run with an Engineer and Conductor, is it the same for rail system?
@RailwayEmotions
No, there is only a driver in the cab.
@delurkor
On Amtrak, depending on the service there may only be a single engineer(driver) in the cab. Of course you still have the crew in the passenger cars. I do not know if any U.S. feight railroads run single person crews, but i would not be surprised.
@brrob8108
@@delurkor Every train in the UK is single manned , except nuclear and military traffic, and many do not have crew in the passenger cars. The driver does everything.
It seems to me that in DB-SBB transition zone there is some other (hybrid? french?) signalling system, because it looks really different to DB in the beginning and swiss afterwards. Also, should the train driver be officially certified in both countries? Do special trainings and exams exist?
@RailwayEmotions
There is no system in between, these are all DB and SBB signals. Of course a driver has to have certification from both countries.

Thanks for another great trip. A question if I may (I'm sure its been asked before!). What is the English translation of the warning message you receive when passing a restrictive signal?
