The live performance of "Sorceress" from Redrocks is awesome, and the keyboard guy is doing a great job. Also, he appears on the live in Sydney concert. You can try the song "A Fair Judgement", it's an epic one.

If keyboard guy is your guilty pleasure, check out Opeth - Sorceress live at the Red Rock, it’s his song so to say 😊 He’s playing his ass off during that one

Sorceress is one of their songs that somehow sounds heavier in their live version, which I of course appreciate. At least the one from the Red Rocks concert.

I laughed out loud at the first shot of Keyboard Guy. Also laughed toward the end when he was dramatically draped over the keyboard. I have to admit this sounded great.

It's interesting to hear Mikael's voice almost "breaking" into the way he used to scream back in the day, specifically at around the 14:11 to 14:19 mark - you can tell he wants to go there, but doesn't. Good for him, absolutely the correct move, but for die hard fans it's like the Roundhouse Tapes is right around the corner, it's right there. Great video Lauren! Bit late to the party myself, but always lovely to see Opeth being covered, especially live.

If you can find it somewhere, you have to check out the "making of" part of the live DVD (as it were) "Lamentations"... That documentary details the recording of both Damnation and Deliverance, and is a fantastic insight into how these guys just made it happen. Freaking laid back and awesome musicianship. And yeah, Åkerfeldt used to have a fantastically deep and powerful "growl", no dub or effects. I think it kinda took its toll on his voice eventually, so he tries to keep it at a minimum nowadays (the last 4 albums had no growling vocals whatsoever, and songs from these albums make up an increasingly larger part of any given live setlist of theirs).

Lady L, if you've never seen them Live, it is a must. Mikael is sooo funny talking with the audience. They always sound great. I've seen them play using Death vocals and I've seen them play not using Death vocals. Both shows... AWESOME!! Keep up the good work and we will always be here for you. 🤘👍🤘😎🎵🎶🎵 BTW, the Death vocal thing; it's not hard to learn or do if you use the proper technique. You use what's know as false vocal chords. I've learned how to do it. It's fun. I sometimes use it as a speaking voice; especially if somebody honks me off. It totally FREAKS people out; which, I have to say, is the fun bit. The look on their face when they first hear it, Priceless.😂😂😂😂

Yesssssaaaaa!!! I finally made it home after work. Immediatly took my earplugs. What a band, what a reaction ( just love your genuine style, but you knew that already 😀). I'm glad for you that you see and feel that they are live on stage just as good as they sound on album. One suggestion: from the same concert Sorceress. It was the opening song of this evening. You will see keyboardguy much more because of the intro. There will be no growls (unfortunately as far as I'm concerned 😄) But believe me it's a killer song. It's like a caterpillar easily crushes everything on its way (you'll understand this when you hear the song). A killer riff. All the good 🤘🤘🍺

I can do "the demon" as well. It took over a year of practice to "get it" and now I'm 2 years into it and am still improving. Some people find it easier but it did not come natural for me at all and I had to learn Mongolian throat singing first in order to work into it. It's very common in death metal and black metal genres so what he is doing is nothing unique. It uses false vocal folds and/or fry and you basically engage those to get the sound and then sing through it. I"m pretty good at imitating "Mikael Åkerfeldt" style growls. I also like immitating modern "Satyricon" style and "Dark Tranquillity" style and even "Obituary" for fun. It's fun to sound like different artists once you learn the technique and get better at it.

I prefer this live version over the studio version sometimes as well. I think it’s because the keyboard sounds in general are way more prominent. Also a lot of the groovier sections are played slightly slower than on the record, at least slower than they used to do it live.

I have no idea how he does it either! But I DO know that healthy (i.e. don't damage your vocal cords) "demon guy" vocals are much more about technique than physical exertion. That's why you don't see him physically looking like he's trying really hard.

His vocal technic deffinietely evolved . He used to have much deeper grunt , like here : kzread.info/dash/bejne/iY2VmMuQlczXZps.html Now it is a typical growl . You are right about that his vocal could be rerecorded . This video sounds too good to be true . Today it is much easier to make the "ideal video" where everything is leveled as good as possible. All of that is the reason why many people like the older videos, which are less ideal but show truer performance.

I know it might be an unpopular opinion, but I like Bass Guy more with the short(er) hair. He's not really the type for the long metal headbanging hairstyle and I kinda like it when there's the one guy in the band that stands out because he's not following The Look. Also from everything I learned watching voice teacher reactions on KZread, that death metal growling apparently isn't physically very taxing. It's totally normal to just stand there like a normal person and make these sounds. If you see someone doing it in a power stance with very strong facial expressions it's probably just done for the show.

I know Axe is so tight with tempos, but always his live versions are a little slower than original, I prefer Lopez live versions, even if they are a little faster than studio verisons. Lopez gave Opeth their best sound ever and never again has been matched. Sorry for my bad english.
