Imagine how this was my introduction to Opeth, back in 2009. Described to me as the masters of progressive death metal, a band that I should definitely try, I firstly was a bit reluctant because I was not a lot into growling and heavy stuff. One day, I finally decided to take my first steps into Opeth, I went to the store and bought their fresh new release, Watershed. I was expecting harshness, distortions, disharmonies and then... Coil. I immediately fell in live with their music, in all their phases. Well, I had exactly the same reaction you had here, while the female singer came in. Then, Heir apparent came in. Watershed, what a trip! By the way, it became (and also is nowadays) my all time favourite album. I higly recommend you Hessian peel and Hex Omega (so you will complete the Watershed album), and also one of the most beautiful, melancholic, and decadent songs I've ever heard: Isolation years, the song which closes the Ghost Reveries recording, of which Coil is the perfect liason, starting the new album in the same atmosphere. Beautiful and heart touching!

Oh man, you’ve been on a roll lately Lauren, your face when the female vocalist came in was golden, and then when without missing a beat you whispered “is that him?” I bursted out laughing so hard 😂. Coil is such a great mellowpeth song, beautiful guitar playing and great bass lines, and the contrast of heir apparent which is definitely one of their heavier songs is incredible. Heir Apparent is a lot to take in on your first listen, but once your ears adjust to it, you realize how great of a song it truly is, and you already picked up on how insane Axe’s drumming is in this song, he was a great replacement for Martin Lopez. I still support you doing Godhead’s Lament or Moonlapse Vertigo next, but I did see some comments who would like you to do something from their first two albums (to bid you farewell not withstanding of course) and for such songs I would recommend either The Apostle in Triumph (1st album) or The Night and the Silent Water (2nd). Both songs are a good mix of heavy and light, not as overpowering as Heir Apparent for example, so you’d be able to breathe again with either of those songs.

Watershed is many people's favorite Opeth album (Mine is Blackwater Park) and for good reason. These two track opening shows off everything Oldpeth stood for. Coil being so soulful and soothing and then Heir Apparent hitting you like a freight train. That opening cord is so evil. You can watch the live version from the Garden of Titans where they perform Cusp of eternity and then Heir Apparent right after. Red lights fill the arena the moment Heir Apparent starts and like you said, it's just epic.

Especially fond of their debute Mask of Air that is an all time high for me. Their latest Technatura seems to be most popular with many fans though. About Soen I'd say they were more Tool:ish in the beginning and more Opeth:ish later on. (A bit strange, considering they host former Opeth drummer Lopez, that they got closer to Opeth with time. Often you're closer to the "heritage" (no pun) in the beginning and freeing yourself more along the road. But then again there's an old band called Arena who host the former drummer of the even older band Marillion, and they kept playing "early Marillion" style....) (And when are we gonna see a Meshuggah reaction here? 😁)

@@progperljungman8218 Cool! I will check out Vulkan, haven't heard of them. Thank you for the suggestion! You are right about Soen, they started with Toolish influence in their first album and gradually shifted towards Opeth style later. Some of their riffs in Lykaia sounds more Opethy to me than the newer works of Opeth themselves. 😅 Glad that you caught the Meshuggah reference! We can definitely suggest Meshuggah for a new band reaction 😄. But I am not really sure about it because a lot of people find Jens' vocal grating and monotonous :( I know people who love Opeth and Gojira but couldn't get into Meshuggah because of the vocals. I think his vocal suits perfectly with all the music they create and I find Meshuggah's songs to be really meditative! 😁 Also, I would recommend you to checkout Leprous if you haven't already. In my opinion, they are one of the best modern prog metal bands out there, and their drummer (Baard) is considered one of the best in the modern prog scene. They had some Opeth influences in their first album and just like Opeth, they changed their sound (moving from heavy in their initial albums to somewhat poppy and softer sound in their later albums) but not as drastic as Opeth. I would recommend checking out their second (Bilateral) or third album (Coal) and their latest album (Aphelion) to see the variety. I hope you enjoy their songs!

@@futurebreedmachine9302 Yeah!... Saw Leprous first time when Tall Poppy Syndrome was fresh 😁 Wouldn't say Opeth did a narrower turn musucally though. Depends on what you count as distant styles from each other. Opeth are more consistently prog - though less metal - while Leprous are exploring more pop-territory.

I know what you mean about the off notes. Mikael likes to play dissonant music. A great example of this would be "Patterns in the Ivy" from the Blackwater Park album. The song is about 2 minutes long and it's just keyboard and acoustic guitar and it sounds like they're playing two different songs, but it works. I know how much you like keyboard so you should check it out on your own time. It's a lovely, short instrumental song. Love your show, Lady L 👍😎👍🤘

Well, there is not such a thing as wrong note. Even theory wise. Theory doesn't limit your choice of notes and is just a language to explain things. I know Mikael isn't theory guy and just writes what sounds good to him, but he does have some theory in his head even if he doesn't know the words for them. Or maybe he has own words. I don't know about other band members musical background. Drummers definitely know what they are doing rhythmically and keyboardists probably know the theory to some degree and maybe bassist too. And Mikael also probably knows some stuff even if he hadn't studied it. Well, that's all guesses and doesn't matter as long as Mikael keeps writing great music.

@@morlokkurak4763 A minor = A C E and G# = G# C D#. You can take those notes anywhere and any order and have some notes more than once. Often the bass note is played at the bottom note, but not necessarily. They of course sound different depending where how do you choose to play them, but if you want to play some certain Opeth song for example then it's better to go close or exactly like original. Did I even answer what you were after? :)

The “off” sound that you’re talking about is called “dissonance” and you’re right Opeth’s music is full of it in, both in their melodies and harmonies. I can’t say for sure the “signature sound” that you’re talking about but I know that they incorporate a number of “off” or “exotic” sounding scales that really allow them to do some really unusual stuff with dissonant tones and other harmonies that you’re just not used to hearing.

Wow, i ´ve been waiting for this reaction for a long time and boy, you didn´t dissapoint me!!! The moment the female voice starts and you said "Is that him?" was priceless, and only we who had watch all your Opeth reactions can measure how great and ultra funny that was!!! If you could saw my face at that moment, you would saw the biggest smile i´ve made in a long time. Opeth is my all time favourite band and i listened all their records thousand of times, but your reactions made me reconsider how good is Watershed, the last Opeth album that is a perfect 10. It is not the fastest one, but hell, it is the heaviest. At that point, nobody could think that it was going to be the last truly Opeth's metal album and the last time we were going to hear the demon :( (well, thecnichally, the last time will be in Hex Omega, the only song you didn´t react on this album). Anyways, i think now you must check their first two albums, specially the second, Morningrise (of which you reacted to To Bid You Farewell, which is the only mellow song in that record). You will find in that album a very different flavor of demon to complete The Demon Journey. And, bass, if you love bass, Morningrise delivers in spades. Again, it was an awesome reaction, you are great!!!
