If you like pre-Dreadnoughts, look up images of the "Great White Fleet" Basically, it was President Theodore Roosevelt's way of flexing the US navy's muscles, preparing sailors for possible logistical challenges of a naval war against anyone (especially the Japanese) And it was 16 battleships. All pre-dreadnoughts. All painted with a crisp white hull and a deep tan/yellow superstructure.

Depends on how R the NG is. Used to play alot of battletrch and programmed the hitlocation tables in a small turbopascal program. Turns out TP used a fixed lookup table. 2nd or 3rd roll ( IIIRC ) was always a head hit and the 7th was always floating critical landing in the CT. By the 2nd match pattern recognition started to kick in something fierce.....

Battle of Cape Fear New York Evening Journal: Hearst Communications MDCCCXCIII, 14 November 1893 The Boise class Semi-Armored Cruiser Northampton, from the Pensacola Naval Base in Florida, was patrolling the Atlantic coast off the Carolinas when she was found by two Antinio Ulloa class Cruçeros de 3a Clas, the Pampero and Huelva. With her own experience in September in the First Battle of Tampa Bay from which she was still five men below full crew complement and the battle report from Pensacola at the Second Battle of Tampa Bay, the Skipper of Northampton knew he had to keep his stern to the enemy and their bows toward him. This would keep their two single 7.6” turrets mounted aft and amidships out of play. Therefore when he sighted the Spanish ships coming in from the south-east her turned Northampton north to hold open the range and force them to close on her directly. Northampton thus was able to fire first. The 4.2” guns on the Spanish ships not yet in range. With her angle Northampton was able to fire off her starboard quarter with three of her 5” guns. Huelva was closing first under smoke, coming bow in and denying herself her 7.6” guns. Even Northampton’s 3” guns began to fire. Northampton switched to high explosive shells as Huelva closed. Northampton took a minor hit and returned one. Huelva closed to within a half mile and began to line up her port torpedo tubes. Northampton tried to line up with her aft tube. Northampton however finally got a flooding hit on Huelva. Huelva finally launched her torpedoes. Northampton’s turn was timely as all three torpedoes missed. With them past Northampton centered her rudder to let Huelva come up on her starboard for a chance for her own torpedo launch, but Huelva was cutting to port to bring her starboard launcher to bear. This however brought her right behind Northampton’s aft torpedo tube. The aft torpedo when out, hit amidships, and detonated a magazine. Northampton turned to port, trying to bring her port tube to bear before Huelva could launch her starboard tubes. The torpedo went out and Huelva had to turn away hard. The angle of the hit meant that Northampton’s torpedo didn’t detonate. Huelva however was badly flooded and the hard turning had done her no good either. Huelva sank with 310 of her 320 man crew. Pampero was finally coming up. The habit of Spanish captains to try and hog the glory for themselves meaning she had not been able to coordinate the attack on Northampton with Huelva. Northampton was able to hit Pampero with 3” and 5” shells as she closed. Pampero launched torpedoes and again Northampton turned to avoid them. Northampton tried to turn back to bring her starboard tube in line but Pampero had sunk already with 303 of her 320 man crew. Northampton took 3 casualties in the battle and picked up 27 Spanish survivors.

Love having you back, glad you chose America this time. Maybe smaller faster firing 9 inchers on your capitol ships? Increased fire might be better than occasional hits with bigger guns? Your practice of well armored and many bulkheads are paying off vs. those Spanish ships with next to none. Also good to hear you swear like an American. Good hunting brother.

Third Battle of Tampa Bay New York Evening Journal: Hearst Communications MDCCCXCIV: 18 January 1894 The Delaware, lead of her class of battleship, and the T-Class class Torpedo Boat T5, from the Miami Naval Base in Florida, joined the Boise class Semi-Armored Cruiser Northampton, from the Pensacola Naval Base in Florida, to cover Tampa Bay which has apparently become Spain’s favorite target. The Armada Real Española sent a stronger squadron this time, the Nuestra Señora class Cruçero de 1a Clas Maria Juan and five Antinio Ulloa class Cruçeros de 3a Clas, the Churruca, General Lezo, Diana, Tornado, and Castilla. Maria Juan was small however and armed with just two 7.3” single turrets. The real threat lay in the torpedo broadsides of the five Cruçeros de 3a Clas. On spotting funnel smoke of half a dozen warships, based on their apparent speed, to the south-west, Delaware ordered Northampton to fall in behind her and for T5 to charge the enemy, with the crew to abandon the ship after they launched torpedoes. T5 finally found the enemy ships and signaled back a report of their composition. The Diana was screen Maria Juan with Churruca and Tornado. General Lezo was holding back with Castilla. T5 found Maria Juan relatively uncovered, and as Diana, Churruca, and Tornado tried to hit T5 the torpedo boat closed on the small Spanish Cruçero de 1a Clas. Maria Juan attempted to torpedo T5, but she was too nimble for that to happen. Once past Maria Juan’s torpedo T5 launched her own. Her staggered launch caught Maria Juan twice, both on the main belt. T5 however had loitered too long, failing to break away cleanly. The forward torpedo from Maria Juan hit, but was a dud. Two torpedoes from Diana however caught T5 and exploded, ripping the aft of the ship off. Nine of T5’s 14 man crew jumped off the boat while her skipper lined the boat up to ram the General Lezo. T5 sank while inflicting 1 casualty on General Lezo and 14 on Maria Juan which was flooded amidships with two engines disabled. Diana and her division were now pinned, needing to stay between Delaware and Northampton and their flagship Maria Juan as her crew tried to effect repairs. General Lezo tried to check what damage the ram had done. Delaware edged closer, firing first on Maria Juan, then splitting her fire and putting the 5” guns on the ships of Diana’s division, first targeting Diana. Delaware swept past and turned around, getting a 5” hit on Diana and moving away from General Lezo and Castilla. As she swept around again Tornado became the 5” target. Finally Delaware put all guns on Diana. Finally Delaware got flooding hits fore and aft on Diana. Another hit amidships and Diana was flooding everywhere. Diana sank with 294 of her 320 man crew. Delaware turned her fire on Tornado, getting flooding hits in three compartments. The water pressure breached the bulkheads on Tornado and she sank with 298 of her 320 man crew. Churruca was the next target, with only light damage so far and 3 casualties. Delaware got a flooding hit right in the engineering spaces under the funnels. With engines falling silent Churruca lost pumping power and the flooding spread through the ship. Churruca sank with 303 of her 320 man crew. With General Lezo still effecting repairs and Castilla tied to her, Maria Juan was now uncovered, though she signaled to the two Cruçeros to move and assist her. Delaware circled in, trying to get Maria Juan between her and General Lezo. Delaware was still missing with her 12” guns, but her 5” were hitting and Maria Juan was already heavily damaged, and under pressure from Delaware her flooding was getting worse. Maria Juan managed to get a 7.2” hit back on Delaware. More hits came in, and Delaware was having to turn away from Maria Juan to avoid Castilla and General Lezo. Finally Northampton came into range and her 6” shells put the finishing touch on Maria Juan who sank with 216 of her 231 man crew. Delaware and Northampton turned away from General Lezo and Castilla, drawing them off the battle area and allowing light ships from Tampa Bay to run in and pick up the nine survivors of T5. The chase finally ended after Northampton and Castilla exchanged torpedo hits though Northampton’s were duds, with Delaware having taken 50 casualties and Northampton 48. Castilla got away with 3 reported casualties and General Lezo with one. They were also able to retrieve the 80 survivors of their lost ships.

Second Battle of Tampa Bay New York Evening Journal: Hearst Communications MDCCCXCIII, 22 October 1893 The Boise class Semi-Armored Cruiser Pensacola from the Miami Naval Base in Florida again encountered two Antinio Ulloa class Cruçeros de 3a Clas, the Isabel II and Penísula off the Gulf coast of Florida. It was a clear day with only a little haze on the water but a chop in the waves when Isabel II and Penísula closed on Pensacola. Pensacola turned to receive them with her port broadside, knowing her guns were shorter in range. With their superior speed the Spanish controlled the range and pace of the battle. However their torpedoes were short ranged, and they needed to close to less than half of a nautical mile to get into range. When Penísula closed Pensacola turned away, hoping to make a smaller torpedo target. Pensacola took a hit high amidships but kept fighting and returned a hit in turn. Feeling Penísula coming into range Pensacola turned harder to port, but she was wallowing in the sea. Penísula launched three torpedoes from her port underwater tubes at Pensacola. Two hit forward, one exploding and ripping off her bow while the second was a dud. Pensacola lost another dozen men to the two casualties she had already suffered. Pensacola launched back with her one starboard underwater torpedo tube, catching Penísula hard amidships. The hit set off the Spaniard’s shell magazine, launching gun mounts and turrets into the air. Penísula sank with 304 of her 320 man crew. Isabel II was coming up from astern, as yet untouched, while Pensacola already had damage. Pensacola caught Isabel II with a 5” hit through her main belt. Pensacola was again trying to avoid torpedoes by turning away, but Isabel II timed her launch well. One torpedo went off course but two hit under the main tower, one dud and one exploding. Pensacola now had 25 casualties and was still reloading her starboard tube. Once she had she launched one torpedo that hit Isabel II forward but was a dud. This felt like a death knell for Pensacola. Isabel II had bad flooding in all but her bow compartment but she was still afloat and getting ready for another torpedo strike. Pensacola was fully flooded in four compartments forward. Then Isabel II got a hit amidships and Pensacola lost two engineering spaces. With Pensacola wallowing around Isabel II launched torpedoes again. All three hit but two were duds. Pensacola took damage on her main belt, but while now she had six compartments fully flooded, no more opened up. Her list however had silenced her guns, and her starboard torpedo tube was still reloading. Isabel II kept trying to hit Pensacola but was doing little more damage. Finally Pensacola launched her next torpedo. Isabel II took the hit on her main belt, and the torpedo explosion and Isabel II took more flooding, but stabilized it. Isabel II launched more torpedoes at Pensacola, again hitting her main belt but not opening anymore compartments. Pensacola was wallowing around to starboard with the last momentum she carried, hoping to line up her forward torpedo tube when Isabel II, having put all her efforts into winning the battle, finally lost to the sea, and flooded out, taking 307 of her 320 man crew to the bottom. Pensacola had taken 57 casualties in all, and picked up 29 Spanish survivors as an ocean going tug came out to take her back into port. Though her casualties were relatively minor, her damage is extensive, and she will be months under repair.

It's critical when building a pre-1900 invasion fleet, to look at the $/ton of each of your designs ... And look for ways to reduce rather than increase the price. Once you have achieved the 100k threshold, you can add more nimble and combat-effective ships to run interference while your NI ships evacuate the battle zone. This is why I always design my first NI class with the main armament facing aft.

5:16 See how the torpedo is running at almost 90° to the enemy, because you are ahead, thus having a short travel time (no need to catch up) and a wide target (turning won't help them)? THAT is a well applied torpedo attack. One of the tactics I like to use, if the situation allows it: Approach an enemy capital ship from the frontal aspect, on both sides, so turning away won't help much. Then, as I am running on roughly parallel courses to both sides of the capital ship --- basically a pincer movement --- and launch (hopefully) before we pass side by side (albeit at some distance). 5:19 NOW you made the Peninsula very, *very* ,98upset! Instead of just launching projectiles at you, they are throwing the turrets themselves at you. And the kitchen sink. 9:21 Well, flooding already flooded compartments is just "bouncing the rubble" and does nothing much. 20:06 Pulling a Glowworm, I see ... 32:54 Hood did not expect a shell slipped in between the cracks (or below the belt). You can always have an unlucky impact, especially if the armour plate is already buckled or damaged; then there is spalling ...

I would like to present this design to the Admiralty Design Committee for the 1930 design contract contest for new Battleships. Note: Write this down, because I might forget some parts when the time arrives, so you'll remember the specifics. Year: About 1925-1930 (it depends of when the hull drops) Name: Washington Class Number of Planned Units: 2 Hull: The Modernized Dreadnought V (maybe IV, I don't remember which one, it's the biggest one before the Modern Battleship) Displacement: Max it out. I don't remember how much was it. 0% Draft 2% Beam Max Design Speed: From 28 to 32 knots (at construction. Could be increased if possible) Main Tower: Advanced Fire control Station IV, I think it is (the one that isn't the massive Pagoda Style, the one that resembles the USS Texas, with the tripod mast installed and visible. NOT REPLACABLE WITH OTHER TOWERS) Funnel: 1x Advanced Funnel with Watchtower put right after the Main Tower (maybe add a second smaller funnel aft of the first one if it doesnt reach the needed Engine Efficiency) Secondary tower: Advanced Tower V Main Armament: 4x3 16"/45 guns (ABXY confuguration), Max AP ratio Casemate Armament: 10x1 6"/40 guns (for Anti Ship role), Increased HE AP Type: Capped Ballistic (the highest available at the time) HE Type: Incendiary (designed to destroy smaller ships and transports) Propellant: Tube Powder (the highest available) Bursting Charge: TNT (the highest available) Secondary Armament: 6x2 5"/38 guns (four turrets around the Main Tower, the remaining two between the Secondary Tower and X Turret's Barbette) AA Battery (or Anti Transport Battery, if you want): 4x4 + 6x2 1.6"/60 guns (you'll find a way to put them in place) Torpedoes (if possible): As many underwater tubes as possible, 21" warhead, Standard Propulsion (these are the ship's secret weapon if she encounters foes that cannot eliminate only with her guns, such as those German BBs you encountered in the last episode of the campaign) Propulsion: Turbo Electric Drive (or Geared II, if necessary, but only if it's really necessary) at construction, Forced Boilers (I thought that maybe we needed it to reach the needed speed. If it's too much efficiency, it only benefits to us in range) Citadel: Turtleback at construction Rudder: Balanced, moved by Electro Hydro I at construction (can be improved in refits if possible) Anti Torpedo: Level III (not better because of weight issues) Barbette: Level IV (if not available, the highest available) Main Belt: At least 14" Main Deck: At least 3" Extended Belt: At least 30% of the Main Belt Extended Deck: At least 30% of the Main Deck The rest is yours to choose. I trust your ability. This will be my new flagship (always if she passes the competition in the Design Committee, There will surely be more design concurring, but I've pretty much faith in what I designed). What do you think? I wait your opinion and how it confronts to the other contestant designs for the contract.

Looks decent. Two tweaks I would make: 1) Replace the casemate guns with 5", so that the secondary battery is of uniform caliber. 2) Up the HE shells to High-Capacity (Incendiary is useless for anything other than blowing up transports and lighting fires.).

Okay, I've been meaning to point this out, Brother Munroe - It's not even unrealistic what you're doing with naming ships after Patreon supporters, or having them suggest names, whatever, at least for the US and its navy. I mean, you are supposed to be the Secretary of the Navy, essentially, are you not? As I understand it, the Secretary of the Navy has special dispensation to deviate from the normal naming conventions for the various classes of ships for various reasons, one of them actually being to recognize individuals like Carl Vinson, a US Representative who never joined the military, never set foot on a battlefield, but basically was instrumental in providing funding to the US Navy through his legislative efforts. In return, they named an aircraft carrier after him. An *AIRCRAFT CARRIER*. So, Brother, you are not even being 'capitalistic', really - You're simply carrying on a proud tradition of recognizing those who are helping to keep (your fictitional version of) the US Navy 'funded' and 'operational', so to speak ;p

  • @BrotherMunro

And the research is even worse when playing as them. Btw, I notice that you as well as Stealth has this tendency to push in hard. Is this mostly for KZread benefit ? No, no..., this game does not have a flood of conquests before 1900 starting in 1890, the economic simulation is very bad for that - and that is why it is utopian to play it after 1920... At most 1-2 smaller states can be captured, but only in peacetime - ...and we can't influence that either. ...and it's especially painful that we can't be the John Arbuthnot Fishers of our fleet - increasing crew quality and hit accuracy above the level of AI - as the coffers are so poor, even in America.
