Lyrics:
I watched you change
Into a fly
I looked away
You were on fire
And I watched a change in you
It's like you never had wings
Now you feel so alive
I've watched you change
I took you home
Set you on the glass
I pulled off your wings
Then I laughed
And I watched a change in you
It's like you never had wings
Now you feel so alive
I've watched you change
It's like you never had wings
I look at the cross
Then I look away
Give you the gun
Blow me away
And I watched a change in you
It's like you never had wings
Now you feel so alive
I've watched you change
Now you feel alive
You feel alive
You feel alive
I've watched you change
It's like you never had wings
You've changed
You've changed
You've changed
Into a fly

The song is simply about watching a loved one (whether it be a romantic partner, friend, or family member) change negatively and how it's one of the most heartbreaking things you'll ever see in your life.

This Hispanic guy at my high school drove me home one day randomly and he was jamming this in his car. I asked him the next day what it was called and I would play it on repeat while going to bed for a week straight. As a black adolescent, I wasn’t use to this style of music fell in love and started listening to nickelback, creed, 9 inch nails etc. good times! I miss the 90s

You’re not wrong
When I first met my boyfriend in 2011 he said "for some reason this song reminds me of you, the line about the angel wings, but I don't mean it in a bad way" 12 almost 13 years later and everything we went through and I listen back to it now, he wasn't wrong when he said those words to me, he just didnt know it yet, but sadly, I already knew he wasn't wrong because I was secretly struggling with a tremendous heroin addiction that only got worse over the next two years living with him and his family and when it finally came to light, I already destroyed everything around us. But he still stuck with me, even with a few more years of addiction, lies, mistakes and struggles. Im finally doing good now, just celebrated 8 years in my program to stay clean and blessed to say he is still here sticking with me by my side to this day❤ and have also seen deftones in concert together 😊

My friend loved this song. Was the first person to show it to me. He passed last month from suicide. Ive been really listening to the lyrics the past couple weeks and can now see how deeply this song related to his life. “I watched you change, its like you never had wings” couldnt be more true. Slowly depression takes over a person until before you know it, theyre consumed. I wish I would have stayed in touch with this person. I hope theyre in a better place. 24 is way too young to die. I haven’t felt the same since their passing. RIP friend. Life is cruel.

There music is a timeless classic where generations to come will hear their songs played somewhere and will be awoken with a sense of individuality
For me this song reminds me of myself over the years of mental illness, and the hopelessness of seeing my own downfall through my own reflection through the mirror and unable to do anything about it. I remember riding the metro bus home from school one day back in the year 2000. I was 15 and we were living in a hotel at the time and there was a Kmart across the street. I got bored and walked over, looked through some CDs, and walked out with White Pony. When I got back I sat out on the balcony with my Discman and listened to the whole album start to finish. That day I became a Deftones fan for life, and now over 23 years later I still listen to White Pony from beginning to end sometimes just to get a little bit of that feeling from the first time I heard it!

Loved this song ever since I watched Queen of the Damned as a kid ❤
Have to confess, to be a teenager in the year White Pony came out is one of the best things i remember coming of age. AND the music video is like a swan song for its generation. A ferawell party to the old state of world, like, you had it, and now its time to leave it behind and things have to move further. Lyrics and melody just gives me that feeling of bittersweet impassive last moment with something that is gone and it ends with break away. This vibe to me is heavily felt in the record and it came out on the wave of very special moment in gen x history : Matrix, Fight Club, Lost Highway, Eyes Wide Shut. The time of social dystopian exposition, edgy fashion, , internet, anime, electronic music, heroin chic, rebellion, occultism, consumerism complex, cynicism of wealth, escape from banal and emotional deplete. You really felt the change (bum tss) and this was first time i heard a heavy band sound exactly how i felt, like i was a part of something fresh, advanced, creative.

Deftones is, in terms of term of chino's vocals are about pathos/the emotion conveyed, so whenever and where ever people honestly display emotion you will find a good or potentially explosive (if not both) dating environment. haha. the internet just makes things distant and intangible, but that's kind of like romance, so maybe you're on to something.
Why can’t I get enough of this

I’m so sorry. I’m going through it with my mom. It really sucks. It sucks that they have to want help. And acknowledge that they need it. It’s something I wouldn’t wish on anybody.
I remember discovering this song at the age of 14 all the way back in 2014 and falling in love with it belting it out learning how to play it on guitar. The funny thing is my brother had witnessed its cultural significance in real time when he was my age and acted like I was reviving something that annoyed him I guess because he heard it a million times. Just like Driven Under by Seether, Cold by Crossfade, I Hate Everything About You...etc this song is one of the greats. It has and will continue to stand the test of time like those other songs and so many more. Its just a remnant from an era long gone, its unfortunate but thankfully my brain allows me to imagine
I have had this playing in my head on a loop for the last 3 months. It helps.

Prodigy Jones Of course you heard this on the radio. Stations have to play old stuff like this because there aren't any new hits like this anymore. Bands like this and music like this used to be everyday. Now they are regulated to one specific station given a specific time slot. Where are the NEW hard music hits? Honestly, the last new hard music hit I remember was System's BYOB. These songs weren't niche songs back in the early 2000s, they were real hits that could be heard everywhere by everyone. Not just rockers dug this kind of music, everyone used to be into it. Outside of metalcore and industrial, I really don't hear any new hard bands anymore. It is very interesting to me how those heavier melodic sounds have disappeared from the mainstream.
The first time I heard this song was watching Dragon Ball Z: Cooler’s Revenge, and I haven’t stopped listening to it since 🙏🏾
