I was actually there. I'm in the video. It was such a surreal experience. A whole bunch of deftones fans mixed in with some extras. And during a break while filming in the gym they played change (in the house of flies). It was such an honor to be there the band was totally cool with everyone, was talking to Abe most of the time he is so down to earth. Awesome time. This was filmed in la/valley college. Chino hates this song because the record label demanded them to release a "catchy / short" song to promote the white pony album. because all the other songs were too slow and long according to them . So an spiteful Chino took the slowest, longest song of the album (pink maggit), made the tempo faster, added distortion and some rapping with the first stupid crap that came to his mind, just to "show those mfers how easy it is to make a hit single". the result was Back to School, and the label loved it.

I love how they made this song just to prove how easy it is to make a single just by changing a few things off the fly yet it's still an awesome song. What I'd recommend is occupying yourself with activites that make you happy. The world was a way different place when this dropped. Pretty sure it preceded 9/11 even. But yeah people get all nostalgic about the past but really I think if you went back for too long you'd end up missing the high speed Internet (well to be fair HSI was just starting to come out back then) and the iPhones, KZread etc. We have a lot of really cool things. I grew up down the street from the drummer Abe. I was 15 obsessed with Deftones had a sticker on my old bronco and he drove past pulled me over in his fancy caddy and gave me an autograph. Almost shit myself, it made my whole world! Thank you for the music and formative memories 💝

Yeah it's amazing to think back then there was no such thing as the GoPro, which revolutionized filming for sports. I am pretty sure back in the day the camera dude was also on a skateboard or something anyway to act as a dolly system to ensure the shot stays smooth and fluid.

Actually he himself is dressed as most socal gangs used to dress back in the 90's but he nor the baned were affiliated with any gang and the look basically was common at the time

I miss Chino voice, ofc he stated that he didn't have really had much of vocal training, but I love his vocal fry as well as his low and somewhat gentle, sensual register that he used. ✌️

When the label added this song to "White Pony," it may have been a commercial decision but it ended up making a great album even better. It gives the album a kind of arc, starting out with "Back To School," which is rousing and fun, and then going through all the mood swings of the album before ending with a "reprise" of the "first" song ("Pink Maggit"), except this time it is more like a dirge, as if the band has been worn out and exhausted and this is their last, cathartic transmission before collapse. It was a brilliant addition to the album, but it wasn't an artistic decision, it was a crass commercial decision on the record company's part that ended up working artistically as a happy accident. Which goes to show you that art is bigger than artists and that there is nothing sacred about the artists vision--great art involves a lot of luck and randomness.

When this album came out I was in one of the darkest moments of my life, my mom committed suicide for her deep depresión when I was 11 years old in the year of 94, I was severely depressed because of this and I started drinking and taking drugs, Deftones and their music helped me cope those times full of darkness.

I feel like Generation X and Millennials had the most awesome youth, as they had the most awesome rock bands of all time, like Korn, Nirvana, Deftones and many more, and i feel jealous of that (not in a bad way, is just that i wish i could had experience those bands when they were at their prime). There aren't many bands left that are this awesome and this powerful, and most importantly, that don't transmit that energy on stage. Don't get me wrong, there are new rock bands that are fucking awesome, but bands like Deftones appear once, and i don't believe that an era like that will repeat again, at least musically speaking, and it's such a shame. What's only left is to enjoy them as long as they remain. PD: Sorry if i misspelled something. English is not my main language XD

I love that this song is a satire, and even though can pass such a relatable vibe to someone that is a highschooler, even with the song not beaing one of their best ones probably the worst on the album

this was the high school experience i always wanted when i was growing up & i always wish i'd been born just a few years earlier bc by the time i got to an age of more independence, this era was pretty much already bygone. all i ever wanted was to find some metal buddies and rock out but i came too late ): fans of metal & its sub-genres are few & far between in my generation now

Damn that sucks. All my mates were metal buddies but I was 17 when this dropped so I was bang on the money for this time. Music of my generation for sure. Nu metal blew up and everyone had dreadies and baggy as pants. It’s pretty awesome to think at one point all of this kind of music was considered popular/cool and playing all over mtv and the radio. @@elduderino4579 I was born in 86 and in 8th or 9th grade. People diss the nu metal era and while there were a few cheesy bands there was a lot of good shit too. Def had the jncos, wallet chains, duncan yoyos, skateboards, metal ball necklaces, and often stayed up all night playin GTA 1 on the OG Playstation. Good time to be a kid in the pre social-media era🤘

Early 2000s were probably the last good years. I know you may say Nu metal sucks but it was the last music genre that affected society in fashion, attitudes, pop culture, etc. it's referred to as the "last great music tribe"

I listened to this religiously back in 2001...helped me cope after my dad died, a few months short of graduation.

I remember i was maybe 9 or 10 when my mate showed me this after his older brother showed it to him, thinking Chino was the coolest man in the world

I remember back at the time when KZread wasn't a thing yet, I was going to an internet cafe in Paris to watch some music videos and to listen to some music. It took some time to download but this must have been one of the very first videos I ever checked online. Great memory :)

Every time I'm in High school walking from class to class I put some Deftones on and it's the best feeling in the world. You feel like the world ain't shit and you don't give a fuck about school. Damn I wish I was in High school when Deftones was the shit. It still is for me.

I remember the year 2000 for me was one of the best and defining moments of my timeline... one of my favorite films was out in theaters in time for that summer, “High Fidelity”, and then this album released White Pony. I was just heavy into collecting Vinyl from that timeframe... and now I find myself here listening to this 20 years later. Hopefully I can see another 20 years 🙏

This song brings me back to Jr. High. Was already into them before the video but this song I could play on repeat all day. I'd be jamming to it and rarely did another kid know who I was listening to. These guys deserve way more credit.

Time goes by too fast, shit, 20 years ago I was in high school listening to this masterpiece on loop, I miss those years of rebellion and innocence. The lyrics perfectly describe how we felt in those days... the kings!

Only recently started listening to deftones. I landed on this when I was at work. Binged through around the fur and now white pony. Diamond Eyes is my next listen. I'm so glad KZread bought me here
