Defending Tolkien! Amazon's the Rings of Power Trailer is a DISTRACTION

Ойын-сауық

Whether or not the Rings of Power is good, DOESN'T MATTER. Amazon is trying divide fans on purpose. The only defense, is a defense of Tolkien.
Because professor Tolkien is a genius, he wrote a story about overcoming evil at great odds, which is perfectly emblematic of the defense of his own work. Fans have been standing up all over the world to say that enough is enough. Do we know what the show will be like based on the trailer? No. But We can tell what their intentions are based on how they respond to us.
The most blatant thing, is that fans have been personally attacked, denounced and then kicked out of their own fandom, for completely invalid reasons by people who are "tolerant of everything except intolerance" which only they are in control of defining. It is an abuse of power, and an abuse of fans. I do not trust that there are good intentions here. I sense great evil.

This video uses 32 seconds of unedited audio and visuals from the LOTR "The Two Towers", in a video that is itself, 32 minutes of uninterrupted original thought content, which took a week to write and 30 straight hours of shooting and editing to produce. For whatever it is worth, the narrative point of the included footage was too impactful in the defense of LOTR itself, to not include. I respect, and do not contest, the Copyright Claim, I can only ask the consideration, that because the copyrighted material is less than 1% of the total content, that no legal action or strikes are levied against me.

Greetings Adventurers, This video has been Copyrighted by Warner Brothers because of the last couple seconds. I am posting it anyway, because nothing I can say could defend Tolkien's message better than the LOTR itself. I don't own the rights, simple as that. I don't put ads in the middle of my videos because I don't like interrupting the flow, so I don't make more money on longer videos like this anyway. The problem, is that KZread, will put ads on my content, whether I am monetized or not, whether I want them or not, because simply by using their platform, they have the right to make money off of content that they didn't create, even though I don't have the right to make money on content that I didn't create. There is nothing I can do about this. This video took all week to research and write and 30+ hours straight of filming and editing. If you like my work and are so inclined to support me further, please consider joining my Patreon. It's still a (WIP), but I hope to one day be able to put out the type of immersive Fantasy that we wish to see, rather depending on these large companies. www.patreon.com/LivingAnachronism

While it's not the original video is because they unlisted the original video. It shows alot what Amazon is planning to do. They legit picked influencers over real fans. I just finished watching eight seasons of the remastered version of Star Trek The Next Generation and loved it. But I do want to point out the following: Star Trek's episodic structure plus it's pre-existing tendency to push cultural norms and break societal taboos made the franchise uniquely susceptible to being corrupted by this movement. LOTR has no such vulnerabilities and will - I hope - fair much better.

You really hit the nail on the head with this. I just saw this morning that the actress who is playing "pretend" Galadriel is now telling people who don't like the show that they're "-ists" and "-ics" and to stop following her account. She's also literally telling them to "Shut the f**k up." I am sickened by what is happening with this. I first set foot in Middle Earth 45 years ago when I stepped out of Bag End with Bilbo and went on an adventure. It was an extremely difficult period in my life and the characters that live in Middle Earth have become my lifelong friends. Over the years I have read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings numerous times. I've read them to my son. We've watched the movies and the "making of" content. One thing that Tolkien, his characters, and the cast and crew of the Peter Jackson films all have in common is they are respectful and have class - something that is sorely lacking in those who are destroying works that were at one time good, wholesome and respectful of all. And the fact that they are releasing this trash on the anniversary of Tolkien's death galls me no end. My only hope is that enough people will see what's really going on and not buy into it. Oh, and yes, I do think you would make a wonderful elf!

I was once a Star Wars fan. I loved it. I loved Luke and Han and Leia, I loved the Falcon, the Star Destroyers, the X-Wing. I loved Obi-Wan, and Sidious, and Maul, and Dooku, and even the much-maligned Anakin Skywalker as portrayed by Hayden Christenson. I loved it all. Then The Force Awakens happened, and I thought I had grown out of Star Wars. I was wrong. I hadn't grown out of Star Wars. It had changed and no longer wanted me. I knew this when I watched The Last Jedi. I hated Rey. I hated Holdo. I hated Poe and Finn and Kylo Ren, and I absolutely HATED Luke Skywalker and "General" Leia Organa, and this pathetic washed up old man with none of the self-respect Han Solo had earned in Return of the Jedi. I hated them. And I said I hated them. Then I was called racist. I was called racist because I didn't like Finn. Never mind that I like Mace Windu, or Lando Calrissian, or wished that there were more Asian and Black characters in the movies out of a sheer love of how different humans show how we can be all sorts of different kinds of people. I did not like Finn. And apparently neither did the actor like how his character was handled, so maybe there's a version out there I do like. I was called sexist. Never mind my love of Leia, Mon Mothma, Padme, Ahsoka, Ventress, Mara Jade, Bastilla Shan, Kreia, Mira, Shaak Ti, Juno Eclipse, Ayla Secura, Barriss Offee, or my choice to play any number of female characters in Star Wars RPGs. Sams quote always gets me. Frodo : I can’t do this, Sam. Sam: I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened. But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something. Frodo : What are we holding on to, Sam? Sam : That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.

"When the enemy stands before your walls and demands that you open the gates for them otherwise you're being mean, you should tell them no". I think this is a great insight in how current social transformations are occurring. Some smart people have discovered that you don't need to have honest conversations about social subjects, all you have to do is engage in name-calling and convince others of using these labels to ostracize dissenting opinion. If you don't agree with the what they are pushing, you are the problem, even if you have the reasoned argument and they don't. This strategy is of course not new, but is being perfected using social networking tools and the pervasive media, and sits at the core of what some call "woke".

They don't want people influenced into disliking it, even if the reasons for disliking it are incredibly strong and obvious. I tear up everytime I read the chapter in RotK where Frodo and Sam are on the slopes of Mt. Doom talking about how everyone back home will want to hear about Nine-fingered Frodo or Samwise the Brave, only to realize that no one will actually know what they've done because they are going to die there. It's such a heartfelt moment of old friends cherishing one another, despite facing certain death, and one of the best moments in the book, IMO.

The funny thing is that is a completely made up scene that its not in the book. Boyens said that they had to stop and think for a couple of days, how Sam should answer Frodo's question. And then they thought about the'' good in the world''. You see? It is so well-written scenario, that even the made up lines contribute to tolkiens spirit. Does this have anything to do with the Amazon upcoming crap?

Realistically, if you had contacts and lighter skin toner, you could pass as an elf. Elves are mostly of a caucasian type but their otherworldly nature also allows for a bit of differentiation, but I would say you could pass an elf. Maybe a wood elf if you dyed your hair darker but still made your skin lighter and added contacts. Even Orlando Bloom had contacts for Legolas. So it is dooable. Your frame is also light enough to be an elf. If you were fat or a body builder... well, no. I think the true artist actor sees themselves as a tool, rather than a person, so they naturally are unbothered by technical limitations. I'm white, but hazel green eyed, and I wouldn't feel comfortable playing a blue eyed character unless it was justified or countered with cosmetics. For stories and art, you want the art to be represented. If the character is tall, and you are not, then you suggest a tall person. If they still think you are ideal then roll with it. So long as the tallness of the character is displayed, then that is what matters. The art always comes first.

I have in fact watched the first three episodes and very nearly everything related to the elves could be proven incorrect, or even the complete opposite, if one read the actual second age material provided by Tolkien. I understand that sometimes to dramatize a novel the creator may need to stay from the canon, but Amazon has completely altered and ignored solid, necessary, and unchangeable information to an extreme level. “Clean slate” would be implying ignorance of the canon and relying on Amazon’s inaccurate display to gain understanding of pre LotR lore. Now I’m older, pregnant, and my nursery is Shire themed. My husband named his dog Samwise, memorized the books and loves Tolkien as well. You could say we’re a Tolkien fan household. Those are red flags to me. I won’t be watching it. My husband won’t be watching it. My mother won’t be watching it. Their issue is that Tolkien fans, unlike other IPs, are naturally well read. It's really disheartening to watch a beloved franchise get co-opted by non-fans, unfaithfully reworked, and shoved out the door to churn a profit. Then it gets milked for all its worth, and when it's done the corporation moves on to the next IP with an established fanbase that they can exploit for every last dollar. Seeing all the people who probably have never read Tolkien act like they totally know and care about his works beyond their own political agenda is probably the second most disheartening aspect of this whole affair for me, second to Amazon getting to do this "adaptation". Argue about the show all you want, but when it comes to Tolkien's works themselves: Read the books, love the books, talk about the books. Blurring the line between adaptation and source material might destroy the last spaces where calm in-depth discussion of the Legendarium is still possible, and is ultimately giving power over your perspective to Amazon. What we need is a clear statement: No, whatever legal rights you have - you're not adding to Tolkien's works, and we'll never recognize your show or the divisiveness around it as a valid part of actual Tolkien discussions.

I remember talking to my sister(not an LOTR fan) about how this show is so bad and completely ruining Tolkien's legacy and trashing his and his story's name through the dirt. Her response was, "Why do you care so much?" I grew up on these movies and lore and appreciated the hell out of work and detail that Tolkien put into it and to see that being changed and ignored is actually so aggravating to me. His work has affected so many people and for Amazon to come out and say, "Oh yeah we can make a better story," just shows how little care they have for Tolkien. Either put effort into it and actually try and make it as good and authentic to the story as possible or just let it rest.

THANK YOU for standing up for us, the fans who desperately wish to save our beloved Middle-Earth from corruption. ❤️ I am beyond shocked by the extremely high level of disrespect Amazon is showing Tolkien’s legacy, it is devastating. 😔 To have such an incredible opportunity (and budget) to bring people together, to share the immense love of the lore, to bring more light and joy into our chaotic world, to honor Tolkien…..and they willingly chose to do the opposite. I’m afraid the dragon sickness has taken hold of them, and it seems it refuses to let go...😔

When another filmmaker was going to mess with the story Here is what Tolkien had to say; “The canons of narrative in any medium cannot be wholly different; and the failure of poor films is often precisely in exaggeration, and in the intrusion of unwarranted matter owing to not perceiving where the core of the original lies.” J.R.R. It goes to show that hiring an 'expert' is almost never valid unless they can prove themselves unequivocally in their field. One of the major themes of Lord of the Rings is that progress is reversion. As we move forward, farther away from classical cultures and the origins of our civilization into an industrial era, we lose our humanity to a cold future of constant change. Many things in his writings are a love letter to tradition. To declare that progressing the lore into a set of modern sensibilities is necessary for Tolkien's work proves that you are the exact opposite of a Tolkien expert. You don't even understand what he was saying in the first place.

The same with melanin, elves can't evolve, unlike humans, who change from generation to generation a little bit. That means, even if they could evolve, it would take a so long time, that the environment around them changes faster than the elves. The Noldor became a bit bigger than the other elves, after milenias living in Aman. But it was only around 3 or so generations. And even the oldest became a bit bigger. It’s very disheartening to continuously see franchises get ruined. What does give me optimism is seeing people from so many backgrounds defending the legacy of Tolkien all for the crime of wanting any adaptions to respect and keep faithful to such intricate and ethereal source material. Tolkien helped create and fill (a Jackson helped intensified with LOTR) that cultural mythological sub current that for the people of Celtic-Anglo cultures had been voided until. And yet, it’s the archetypical themes that resonates with people from all over the world. And it’s truly amazing that amazon haven’t figured this out (or they have but don’t take it serious or have purposely taken offence to it). It’s amazing that I don’t have to be korean to emphasise or understand the characters in the film Parasite, or the tv show Mr Sunshine. But yes, thank you for your sober and careful thoughts. I was bullied daily and almost weekly physically abused by other students. When I was 10 my older brother had a copy of the Hobbit for homework. The cover intrigued me so I read it. Then fell in love with middle earth. Naturally I followed up with the rest Tolkien's works. It allowed me to escape the constant bullying. It was a world that good could overcome evil. I never identified with any of the characters because of their skin color or race. I identified with them because of their personality, nature disposition and actions. To have Amazon twist the lore of middle earth is very hurtful and their blatant disregard is unforgivable. Tolkien helped me through some of the worst moments of my life. The only leaders willing to defy him were overruled by corrupt, timid councils, with further attempts to persuade them of such folly stymied by lack of sturdy fortifications on the level of Minas Tirith or Dol Amroth. There were also some pretty cool backstories for the Nazgul hailing from those lands, such as Khamul the Easterling, a notable King of Rhun that desired to repel Sauron, initially.

He emphasizes the need for an "inner consistency of reality" within a true "fairy-story", as he calls it. That is, if there were to be a green sun in your fantasy story, there must be a reason and rule for why it is so. The fantasy world should be real and consistent in itself and follow its own rules, which are different from the rules of real life/normal world. There's also a bit in the essay on how the fairy-story might be used as an objective lens through which to reexamine the real world [[[as opposed to being a mirror of the real world]]]. It's a pretty good read if you're into the more scholarly side of Professor Tolkien.

@@rafaelbalsan4512 Indeed! He did all this at a time when fantasy was still considered for children only--which, as we know, was an idea he turned on its head. What's also interesting in that particular essay is Tolkien's emphasis on the necessity of an event that brings a deep joy, or "eucatastrophe" as he calls it, in fantasy stories. In another quote, he calls it "the highest function of fairy-stories to produce." It makes me wonder what he would think about the kind of grimdark, depressing fantasy that's somewhat popular nowadays.

Any good fantasy story has its own lore and rules. When the rules are compromised or altered it breaks that fictional universe. Many people who aren't avid readers of fantasy don't understand this or see it's importance. Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time even Game of Thrones (check the seasons when they ran out of material to adapt and the decline in quality) and Dragon Age (in more recent installments broke its own lore). You can see the decline in all these properties as they begin to "modernize" and introduce more themes or characters that mirror our world and are not consistent with the actual fictional world.

Though ironically this need for consistancy contributed to him never finishing The Silmarillion. At one point he tried to write a 'round world' version, it kept getting too complicated, then he seemingly decided to try to make the story pass through Man's misunderstandings. I suspect the implication in RotK that Bilbo wrote the 'compressed' Silmarillion to be published made that difficult to figure out.

Not just Tolkien's works though, also Jackson's movies which are somewhat different from the original. They are amazing movies with passion in them and definitely a great way to get into Tolkien, but Jackson and Co. seem to have misunderstood Tolkien's themes in some ways and added/changed some characters and scenes more heavily than necessary. I still agree with the video overall (and anyone speaking out against Amazon is doing a good deed in my book), but it's important to keep in mind that no adaptation can just be equated to the books. Only Tolkien himself could add to his Legendarium, everything else is more like fanfiction - whether someone is legally allowed to profit off of it or not.

Exactly there are ways to make it completely believable and that’s my entire argument to these people their was room in the lore to incorporate other races they just wouldn’t be elves you could argue light skinned actors are considered fair skin for the standards of their race but it’s still a bit more of a stretch or dwarves they’d be from the race of man and if they wanted to keep it in line with the Peter Jackson films just set them all to the east and show how some were corrupted through saurons influence and the rest were hunted down by their former kin explaining why we don’t see them it would make Sauron more evil add more tragic elements to the story and make his downfall at the end of return of the king

"too many people" = the drooling masses, corps don't care about fans at all beside the buzzing noise they make when adaptations don't do x, y or z. If I had my way as a fan then the MCU wouldn't look like a never ending SNL convention - but it does. The drooling masses are the target audience - getting fan approval is a nice cherry on top, but it's one they can live without.

The same people Disney marketed their corruptions of Star Wars to, the same people Star Trek Disco and Picard are marketed to; the desperately politically Left who are aware of the previous iterations of those IPs but are trained to expect more "Woke" content. Amazon literally does not care if the older fan base doesn't like their product, same as the other corruptions aren't aimed at the older fan bases; the assumption is that older fan bases are literally older and more careful with disposable income, less likely to spend money as a virtue signal. Yes, I mean those points seriously. Listen to the rhetoric Amazon and its apologists' default to in their dismissal of criticisms. It IS political whether we like it or not.

That said, it stands as an epic presentation of Tolkein's world and is more than worth appreciating as such. The saddest part about the abomination Amazon has made is that they could had easily created in canon lore stories about POCs by setting the stories in Harad and Rhun which were never explored storywise in the books. Imagine seeing how the people of those lands lived and center it around those that resisted and resented Morgoth and Sauron's call since both saw them as nothing more than arrow fodder since canons didn't exist yet. Imagine also since those parts of Arda were not covered in length one can then bring in lore from those regions for example the Oliphants that we saw in the movies we could see Olyphant riders and trainers using Oliphants to build structures such as a bridge and then have Rok attack them (A Rok was a mythological giant bird that hunted and ate elephants so huge it could had gone toe to toe with Smaug. But no they chose to ditch the canon lore entirely and repaint white characters instead.🙄 Its because of 💩 for brains creators like these and megacorporations supporting them that instead of having an Static Shock movie we get a repainted Clark Kent/Superman instead. This Baizuo era we live under just sucks monkey balls.

Harad would've provided beautiful scaffolding for an untold story of people of color in Middle Earth, but the point wasn't to exalt people of color, it was to diminish what they perceive as "whiteness". They don't want to see original characters in Harad, they want to see "diversity" imposed on "white" iconography to settle a score, which means rewriting staple parts of Tolkien's world. It's disappointing not only as a fan of Tolkien's writing, but also as a person that genuinely wants to see a niche for people of color in fantasy culture. That 1 billion dollars could've been used to elevated poc, but instead it's being used to rewrite English mythology. Another opportunity like that may not come along for generations.

And their women fight as warriors as well as men. Seems woke-ready. But the writers would have to crack a Tolkien book.
