Great video. I think what we really need is a break down of what makes the garments so fucking special rather then coming at it from a philosophical approach. Clothing referenced the clothing, alongside using Man Ray as the blueprint for reference in relation to concept.

Very well done video, however I have a few questions about Margiela’s brand as someone whose first introduction was this video. 1) You mentioned that Margiela’s art was supposed to be a “rejection of allure”, however he only used models whose bodies were tall, skinny and fit the conventional standards. I understand that the focus is supposed to be on the clothing, however if he was truly trying to create are that is a rejection of allure, why would he use models that are attractive and alluring to wear said clothing? 2) It was also said that he remained anonymous to give credit to the rest of his team helping him create and design his clothes, however he named his brand after himself effectively contradicting everything this anonymity stands for. I also don’t understand how hiding the identity of his models and teams and only revealing his own name is giving credit to them. Doesn’t that make no sense? 3) Margiela rejected the idea of tags, labels and flexing but he himself put tags on his clothes. Even if they were made to be removed easily, realistically, anyone paying that much money for Margiela items would not remove it. If he truly rejected the idea as a whole, would he not of completely refused to add any tags at all? Now I don’t claim to know anything about fashion, but based off the information you gave in this video, Margiela seems to me as just another fashion designer trying to make a name for themselves through shock value. Yes, his fashion looks nice and has a cool vibe but it oftentimes contradicts the very message it is trying to convey. Sorry if I’m completely off the mark, I’d love to hear if you had any answers to any of the previous questions.

FIRST OFF, HE USED "REAL" PEOPLE AS MODELS AS WELL AS PROFESSIONAL. IT DID USE VARIOUS BODY TYPES. YOU NEED TO GO FURTHER INTO HIS ARCHIVES TO SEE THIS. I'VE BEEN A MARGIELA BUYER AND FOLLOWER SINCE 1994. ALSO, HE HAD NO EGO BECAUSE HIS NAME WAS NOT ON THE LABELS AS IT TENDS TO BE NOW ESPECIALLY WITH HIS LINE 6 (MM6). IT WAS BLANK. THEN HAD THE NUMBERS BUT STILL NO NAME. THAT WAS ORIGINAL. IT ALSO WAS HIS BUSINESS PARTNER, JENNY'S IDEA. CREDIT TO HIS CREW WAS IN USE OF "MAISON" MEANING "HOUSE". THAT WAS HIS WAY OF ACKNOWLEDGING THEM. WATCH THE TWO DOCUMENTARIES ON HIM TO LEARN MORE. YOU'RE MAKING WAY TOO MUCH OF IT. HE WAS NOT ABOUT SHOCK VALUE. HE WAS ABOUT ARTISTIC EXPRESSION AND WAS A FAN OF 'DADA'/'ABSTRACT' ART WHICH SHOWS IN HIS WORK.

I recently moved to Flanders a few hours from where Martin grew up. Flemish people are funny and snobish and it feels like trolling and joking while at the same time taking their effort of doing so very seriosly, is deeply embedded into the culture.

Not sure tbh. Maybe it was one guilty pleasure or act of ego, in the midst of many other more selfless actions. It could also be that during that time almost every “luxury” or “couture house” name was the head designers name, and they believed they would need to the same to be taken seriously. Really the only luxury fashion company that didn’t do this at the time was CDG. Almost every other luxury brand was eponymous.

you're saying "house" over and over. Maybe say "Margiela" over and over. Maison was not a first name at all. There are several brands that use the WORD "Maison" (meaning "house" in french). He's not the only one, so screaming "maison" over and over is NOT specific.
