As someone with hoarding tendencies who has massively decluttered I think the speed isn't what matters, as long as you maintain that forward momentum you get there. I also found that having to redo rooms I had previously decluttered gradually eroded my urge to buy new stuff so it got easier over time.

I noticed you guys were talking about a project list and what has been a game changer for me (it's from Dana K. White) is that doing the project is an absolutely valid use of decluttering time. Going to hang the picture takes just a few minutes and it's something you no longer have to store. Or it makes you realize you don't actually like it better than what you already have hanging and you'd rather donate it. Replacing the doorknob means I no longer have to store a door knob. And I am not annoyed every time I open that door. And it just takes a few minutes. Completing the project IS decluttering.

I think you should create a huge wall of LABELLED drawers in the garage and every drawer contains only one type of item: one for batteries, one for screwdrivers, one for torches and so on. While you're decluttering the house you can add the items you find into the matching drawers and in the end decide how many and which of each type of item you want to keep.

We must give Sherri some leeway when it comes to declutterring swiftly. #1 Sherri does not live alone which adds another level to declutterring-“frustration”. #2-Feeling completely overwhelmed by amount of items. #3-coming to the realization that declutterring can take years can cause declutter paralysis. Sherri, I’m pulling for you. Carla you are so patient and kind, maybe you can convenience Sherri to get on a more detailed “declutterring (getting rid-of-stuff) plan”😮 Sherri’s journey will be successful. Hang in there. Keep the Faith!

For me, I find it's nice to keep one room or even just one cupboard really, really decluttered and organized so I can go there and remind myself how good it feels to be in that space. One of the things I noticed with your sister, which is true of a friend hoarder I work with….is the need for so many single use items that aren’t really necessary. For example, I remember the “thing used to squeeze the end of the toothpaste” that there were 3 or 4 of from one of your sisters videos….. or my friend had like 5 colanders for specific different types of vegetables, but she NEEDS all of them. As I go through my own decluttering journey, there’s moments where “simplify” has to be my motto…. And then I allow that to offset that with moments where I pick my battles and i really USE the 4 different types of vegetable peelers, but I don’t need the collection of knee socks that I haven’t worn in 5+ years. Thank you for these videos! I did 4 drawers in my bedroom yesterday and also one large bag of trash, a pile of goodwill donate, which feels good. (And a pile of “sell” which either I do or donate). I probably am a clothes hoarder, and need to get to a place where everything fits in my bureaus. It helps to have these conversations in my mind as I work.

Great job sis :) I think ultimately both those drawer pieces of furniture should go, since there's no rhyme or reason to what gets stored in them haha. Having drawers vs. just a flat surface or hooks in the entry just collects clutter -- if there's space it'll be filled! But the items aren't for a purpose unique to the entry or living room, so it's unlikely someone would look there for a given item.

  • @daCubanaqt

I agree, especially when it comes to that entry dresser. There were a lot of little dressers when they decluttered the hallway a little while ago as well. Just too many small, not really functional storage pieces. Also, like things need to be stored together. I’ve seen so many tools in weird places. Ok, I get have a few tools on hand like screw driver or tape measure, but most of those tools should be in the garage.

I use shoeboxes that are sturdy for my dressers to wrangle my clothes. It’s so much easier to find things when they are folded nicely and not loose in a drawer. I also have the white dividers shown in the video for shallow drawers. I bought some amazing kitchen junk drawer dividers from IKEA, but I have find the name.

There was a part in our filming where she said the motivation to Declutter has waned. Lots of technical issues with the filming yesterday so I had to cut that part out . But yeah, I think any big transformation journey. There are a lot of moments where you forget why you wanted to do it in the first place or you want to give up. I go through it all the time with wanting to get in shape and change my eating habits. I’m here if she wants the help and as many breaks as she wants is totally fine by me. Change really does require a great deal of commitment and you have to really really really want it. Easy to keep status quo unless there’s a lot of pain.

Hi Carla, when I get too overwhelmed with the amount of stuff in a drawer, I use what I call a “sorting box” to help me clean it out. Basically it’s just a flat product box ( like you would get at Sam’s Club), or a box lid the size of the drawer I’m organizing. I literally dump the whole contents of the drawer into the box at one time, clean the drawer, and then decide what is most important to go back in that drawer. The stuff left in the box will go back to where it belongs and the trash, junk or donate stuff automatically gets taken care of.

I love the work that you do, I get so many ideas and inspiration from watching your videos for my own decluttering journey as well as my decluttering assistant/side hustle job. One thing that I really like to do that my clients have expressed appreciation for, is that I always take the trash, recycling and the donations to wherever they need to go. I feel it helps them not get tempted to re-hoard items they let go of and gives them the chance to experience and enjoy the freedom and lightness that letting go brings right away. Also I think that showing that part of the process could inspire your viewers to follow through.

I often tackle drawers or a cupboard and even if the results aren't visible, not being in plain sight, I feel it's important that what's inside is streamlined and organised. New homes are created so when new stuff comes up, it's easy to know where it goes, if there are duplicates. Maybe not the fastest method, but it feels right for me to work from the inside and out.

I absolutely love watching Sheri and Carla. I miss both my sisters that have passed away years ago. I feel like I am so much like Sheri, I declutter one room and then fill it up with stuff that I am decluttering from another room. I feel like a dog chasing its tail at time. Sheri you are so awesome sharing this journey with all of us and it gives me inspiration - Carla you are such a wonderful sister and friend. LOVE YOU BOTH looking forward to seeing more from the two of you. (I love your mothers saying - house under construction LOL)

Did you find any batteries for the smoke detector? I heard it chirping. That always makes me nervous. I lived in an apartment, in the 90s, and half of the complex burned down. Very scary and traumatic, even though my apartment didn't burn. The minute I hear a chirp, I change the batteries. I try to change them before they chirp, though.

Hey Carla! Just wondering has Sherri ever considered therapy for her hoarding tendencies? Just wondering bcse I know you have said your mom was also a hoarder & how we grow up greatly effects how we live. I know you have worked very hard & been able to keep your home very simplified & minimalistic but perhaps Sherri would benefit from that inner work so that permanent changes can be made? Don't get me wrong I understand it is all a huge process & a whole lifetime of living a certain way is not going to change even in a couple of years! You are such a good sister Carla & you have the patience of a saint. I know you want the best for your sister but obviously we can't want more for those we love than they want for themselves. She has to want the change enough to do the very hard work to make that happen! Sherri is a doll & I wish the best for her!! 💖

Dear Carla, dear Sherri, this will be a masterpiece for both of you. Carla is still ahead at the moment. With their experience. But this project is bigger than any you've had before. It's a whole house. With several residents. It seems infinite now. But it is not. Here calculations have to be made in other dimensions. We are still taking inventory: "What do we actually have?" Sorting things out is very difficult at this time. Because there is no overview. But the day will come when all the tools (for example) will be in a heap in the garage. And by then you had held each one in your hand at least three times. And you are now 100 percent sure that there is nothing else anywhere. And now (!) you can let go. Only now. I predict that from then on everything will suddenly happen very quickly. 1. The decision 2. Choosing a place for what remains. Because everything is possible now, everything has been rearranged and we have learned that nothing is set in stone, but that places can be reoccupied. It will be your masterpiece. And then you stand there arm in arm and say: "Look, dear mother. You didn't make it. But the two of us together, your daughters, we made it happen. It's all good. And, by the way, we love you very much ."

Seeing all the current duplicates and designating a home for things will help reduce buying more over time. It's so hard with the small things. I say to myself I will dump a whole draw in the rubbish bin but when I see the contents I end up keeping most of it. I am very strict about a home for everything though so I don't usually end up with duplicates.

Carla, I applaud you for patiently helping your sister with this tremendous task. And Sherry, I applaud you for letting Carla (and others) help you and let us follow along your journey. I feel like you are slowly arriving at a point, where relocating is not an option anymore. The garage will be much harder to go through the second time. I wish you both the strength to deal with it, please don’t skip this important step! Sherry, maybe look for coaching outside of family to help with your issues of not being able to let go. I wish you all the best!!

I would like to send my love to your sister and say, you are so intelligent. You don't need all this stuff. You have all the knowledge within you. To me it feels like you don't rely on what you have inside you. It's enough. I also think that you are kind of prepping for every possible scenario. I can recognise myself. There were times in my life when I bought books for the future in case I would be cut off from the world and not be able to find books. I realised that I was lacking faith in the future. I think you are doing a great job decluttering. Take a step back and try to figure out what it's all about. Do I believe in scarcety or abundance. ❤❤❤

Love this series❣️ Thank you Sherry & Carla for Keeping It Real👍 I think, for many of us, our homes’ disarray is a result from being SO BUSY with the other parts of our lives! It is difficult to make thoughtful decisions when you’re exhausted! Then those delayed decisions morph into disarray in our lives, whether it’s the home, the car, the finances, & even relationships. Just because a person is finally able to make the decisions, doesn’t necessarily mean they suddenly have ample time to act on all those decisions at once! I think it’s more “Real Life” to be moving along, one area at a time, while still seeing progress. Keep chipping away at those small areas and you’ll wind up with the form you’re looking for👍 Thanks Again for being such great encouragers❣️
