I have the utmost respect for you both. So much love and care in this non judgemental walk through a precious person’s life. On my own journey my first step was to stop watching tv about 12 years ago. Very gradually my indiscriminate spending decreased until it finally stopped. I still buy things but mostly I don’t buy unnecessary stuff any more. I am a wool hoarder. I have about 3 years worth of fibre in my cupboard. I am working through it, it’s a joyful ‘decluttering’. Thank you so much for sharing your journey to financial and mental wellness. ❤

I went to Kohl's the other day to return something to Amazon. When I entered the store it looked like Christmas threw up all over the place. They had every kind of christmas-themed item decorations bath towels kitchen towels sweaters you name it it was Christmas themed. All I kept thinking was clutter clutter clutter. Run run run. Wasn't tempted in the least.

Your sister said „It helps me a lot to keep other areas clean. I didn‘t know how to start because it overwhelmed me.“ It is so true! She does not has to be ashamed of her clutter piles. There‘s advertisment everywhere and every company seem to sell the „Perfect“ product and impulse buying has gotten kinda normal by that. It is totally me at the beginning of decluttering! God bless you both! ❤️

I'm really impressed with how serious your sister is about decluttering. I love how this process gives you clarity about what you're buying. Its not until you bring all of the similar things together into one place that you can really see how much you already have. I found that the more I got rid of the less I wanted to buy. It's not just the wasted money, it's the appreciation that you develop for owning less and having less to deal with. I'm working through backlogs in both cleaning supplies and haircare/skincare. I feel like doing a little happy dance every time I use something up and can take a fresh one out of the backups, lol.

I SO relate to your comment. I overbuy cleaning supplies for sure. You’d think I have a cleaning company. Ironically, while I’m great at tidying and organizing and decluttering, cleaning as in scrubbing floors and vacuuming, is definitely not my strong suit. I never have dirty dishes in my sink, and I scrub toilets pretty much every day, but you can eat off my floor as in there’s at least enough crumbs to make a snack. Why do I order things like brooms and mops and cleaner - do I think there are some that are magical and won’t require effort on my part? I’m officially calling myself out on this foolishness. You’ve inspired me, along with lovely Carla and her lovely sister.

I used to do backup buying as well and it was an anxiety thing. I challenged myself to not buy and extra pack of toilet paper & paper towels when I already had some and it's good. Now I only have to buy it once per month. Yay!!!!

  • @carolefoldPacNW

    @carolefoldPacNW

    8 ай бұрын

@@solitudewithmichelle Same here and absolutely related to anxiety. We had to completely move out of the main floor of our home for a total remodel which began in January of this year. It was a wake up call about how pointless it was for me to overbuy and stock up. I made a vow not to do that in the future and mostly I haven’t. I didn’t even have shelves put up in the laundry room during the remodel, because they just attracted the clutter of overbuying and forgetting we already had things like lightbulbs and paper towels and a ridiculously huge bottle of Windex. The only things in my laundry room now are the washer and dryer on pedestals and the drawers of the pedestals hold nothing but the use and care manuals and Color Catcher sheets and dryer sheets. And, there’s a cleaning cabinet with a rod attached for hanging laundry. That’s it. The two shelves that used to attract excess and random stuff no longer exist. I ended up giving a lot of new cleaning supplies and paper goods to the food bank, along with pantry items. So while I still buy and have too many cleaning products I don’t have as many as I once did, I’m making progress. Now if I could sort out and pare down the ridiculous amount of travel accessories/toiletries I have. They all fit on one shelf in my travel cabinet (where I store suitcases) but I still have too many.

It's amazing how finding the strength to just begin gives the momentum needed to just do something. You know that you're shopping mindset has changed when you go into Marshall's and just leave with the one item you needed, or with nothing because you did not find exactly what you needed or wanted. "The journey of 1000 miles begins with one step." Your sister has taken many steps by this point. Good for her. Many of us are saying "no more," to this marketing sabotage that we've been subjected to.

My favorite shopping habit is filling up my shopping cart and really thinking about which items I want, removing things I don't really really want/need, and then once I'm satisfied with the price, I close out of the shopping site and watch youtube or a show or otherwise occupy myself. Gives me the satisfaction of shopping without losing money and without getting items that I have been able to live without. Any items I truely need I have to go to the grocery store for (even for the items in my online shopping cart).

I also love that you do ask some difficult questions about whether or not to keep, but for the most part you accept the decision even if you would have personally decluttered.

Hi Carla, I usually watch your show on TV so I'm not able to make comments. But I'm online today and I thought I'd comment. You asked that we introduce ourselves and mention where we are from. I am a 67 year old woman in Texas and I love your show. I live alone and I feel I can relate to you! I'm sure most of your audience is younger, but I thought you'd be interested! I was going to make a suggestion for decluttering things. Do you have Freecycle in California? It's great for things you want to give away but may not be appropriate for a charity shop. Such as used candles (people melt them down and remake new candles), hangers (our charity shops never want them), extra wood or paint or tools. Cleaning supplies or bath supplies I'm no longer using. Lots of things. I removed the contractor grade mirrors from my bathrooms and replaced them with framed mirrors. A young man came and got them for his home. Key word, they come and pick things up! I think there's something called Trash Nothing, but I've been using Freecyle for years.

Sherry, I used to have a shopping thing too. When I realized it, I became a binge and purger (I would frequently return items soon after purchasing.) Then my next step was to put things in my shopping cart and delay checking out, delaying caused me to rethink the purchase and I would put a lot of the things back on the shelves, I now avoid shopping unless I have a well thought out list. Becoming more careful acquiring things has been a process but well worth the effort!

I love, love, love your sister! She is so loving, kind and got such a sweet disposition about her. I love all your videos but these are my favorites. I look forward to every single one of them. Please tell your sister we said Happy Thanksgiving. Same for you. Please tell her to keep the blue caninet. That will store so many items.

I love the fact that your sister is motivated and willing to de-clutter! I am trying this with a family member of mine but they move everything back, are not motivated to keep things clean, and take stuff out of our donation pile. It is always an argument after the other on what should stay or go. Keep up the great work! I would love to hear how your no-buy November goes! :)

This is awesome. Your sister has a lot of self awareness about her spending and seems really motivated to declutter her home. I think online shopping is challenging because it’s so easy to buy things. Wanting to be debt free is a GREAT reason to stop impulse buying. Keep up the great work ladies!! ❤️

Your sisters place reminds me so much of my mother in laws. She has a shoppping problem and cannot walk away from a sale. Every single cupboars and drawer and unit is exploding with stuff. None of it is organised or grouped so she endlessly re buys. She reckons she knows everything she has and where it is. She definitely doesnt! She also struggles to throw away anything that could possibly ever be used.

I love and adore these sessions with you and your sister. I'm glad you're getting to spend time just chatting, also. But, honestly, I can tell how much this is helping her get through this overwhelming task and you're helping change her and her kids (and grandkids) lives for the better overall! What a tremendously sweet gift. XOX Joy

It seems that I've been decluttering for years. I need to declutter and organize my creative space. I can so relate to your sister's spending habits because mine are just like hers. I just recently prayed that God would teach me to be a good steward of my money and so far I'm doing good.

Carla, I do not understand one thing. My English is not that great, but you mentioned that your sis has got grown up children. Why everone does not help her with keeping nice and clean. Sometimes it is enough just to put the things on their right places after using them.

Having one area clean does motivate to keep it clean and want to declutter other areas so that too can be clean. I recall that the motivation is a more minimal lifestyle to decompress and come home to relax without stress of clutter everywhere. Sometimes it’s hard to recall the goal when one is used to justifying the need for every item that is sitting around. It’s tough to change a habit, and this is a habit to collect things.

The problem is , in order to be a prepper she needs to be able to walk safely through her home, not to mention not starting a fire accidently with candles in a cluttered home. This poor lady. Good for her for outting effort in. I believe in going back to the area that has been complelted and decluttering it again as most of the time people can part with much more than they thought they could the first time around.

Love this series. I am a prepper. Sis just has to learn that what she buys should only but what she actually uses for the most part. Prepping is for any emergency or disaster. So use the candles daily especially the smell good ones. the food only buy what you use normally and rotate. It's called a working pantry. Trust me when i first started i made the same mistakes. You guys are rocking this series. I put all my prepping for power outage in the buckets you had in garage with the yellow tops. and label the buckets. i only keep candles inside that i use daily. Good luck! can't wait to finish watching the rest of the series.

If you have time for more videos on top of what you already have planned, would love to see how you decorate your place for the holidays (if you decide to) and maybe a DITL video. It is such a joy to see you with your sister. I have four and it is a blessing to be forward and honest while loving and laughing and being respectful about it all. I am your sister in that I too prepped for the zombie apocalypse. She and I have so much, and many, of the same things, and my house looks like hers. The before. Creative with the storing and stashing to the point of overwhelmed. I get every bit of her plans and reasoning. She's done so very well with her purging. You both did an awesome job and I've enjoyed every minute of it, and am inspired. 💕

I use scented candles all the time after I clean. It’s not because it’s for decoration. I have a weird anxiety after cleaning where I never want to stop. Once a room is cleaned well enough, I light a scented candle as a reminder that I already went thru that room and that it’s okay to not tear down a room and re-clean it. 😅 It’s helped me soo much. I do go thru a lot of them and every time the electricity goes out i feel so lucky to have them in every room. It’s not something I even have to think about. I just go light them in every room. I want a no buy month. I’ve never been able to do one.
