Decluttering a junk closet can feel overwhelming. This is how I tackled this mini room from start to finish. I always like to take everything out and give the space a good deep cleaning. Then I start sorting similar items together. While doing that I start a pile of things I want to get rid of and place off to the side. I end up making mini piles for what I am giving away. Things to give to friends. Things to donate. Things to recycle. Things to trash. Things to do (like shred papers in this case). Then it's time to put everything back into the closet. I go verticle to make sure that I can maximize space once again. Living in a small apartment with very limited storage means I have to be smart when it comes to organizing my closet space. I am gradually becoming more and more of a minimalist and it feels good. To me decluttering is a process and a way of life.

Thanks for the video! Not sure if that's something you'd like to do but I would personally love to see a video with all these small jobs you mentioned you still have to do: fixing the handle, the box, sell the instruments, erase the laptop data, etc. A compilation of productive things.

@@TheCarlaProject I would very much appreciate data erasure. Cleaning the computer! Carla, you are such a lovely, elegant person.
Pro organizer here. Great job on the closet. One thing I would recommend is to put the toilet paper and paper towels down low and the canned goods at eye level. It will be easier to see what you have and not have to squat or bend down to hunt.
@TheCarlaProject

oh that is actually a good idea. I rarely eat canned food but good to have for at least emergency stash.
Thank you Carla for showing it's okay to be overwhelmed and then push through! Keep up the videos, they are inspiring!

Thank you so much for your kind words!!
Great end result! Seems like you've gotten through almost your entire living space now. After you have had the time to live in your new tidy space, could it be an idea to do follow-up videos for each room/area and see what has worked and what needs another decluttering?

Love that idea! I'll definitely do that. I'm already seeing more I can let go of. But getting closet to the finish line :)
I love how realistic you were in this, I can’t Tell You how many times I’m like yes! I’m motivated then you take all Your stuff out and then it’s like wellllpp now I’m overwhelmed…

This is inspiring to really go through my closet. I have so many clothes I don’t need anymore. I’m 52 now and I’ve had some of these clothes since I was 41 lol

I used to. I've been slowly decluttering things like this over the last 5 years. Most recently I found a bag from Victoria's Secret and I'm like, "was I really planning on using that to give someone a birthday gift?!" 😆
@jeanmorrison9509
Жыл бұрын
I have taken those bags and decorated them with washi tape, cards, decoupage cut outs, etc.
You really glowed after cleaning out your closet! I am so bad at building stuff, too. Kudos to you for getting that done. It looks so great. So satisfying when you rolled your washing machine in there. You’ve inspired me yet again. Thx TCP!

Thank you for being real. It is so comforting that you show your struggles, and thought and solution processes. It takes the shame away. I have hooks on the back of most of my doors. Takes care of coats, purses, in between clothes, laundry items that get hung up vs. the dryer, etc.
OMG like i am hearing myself when i am in the full power of cleaning and reorganizing, until i hit a problem and keep saying YOU CAN DO IT. You are doing a great job tho.
When it comes to the books in your closet, you can stack them on floating shelves over your TV. That would look nice and you would open up more space in the closet. Just an idea ... : )
@TheCarlaProject

I have this eyesore of a wall heater (that doesn't work)...Otherwise love the floating shelves look!!
@sinaain
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I would store the books in the living room. I think there are many possible solutions from floating shelves somewhere to one of those book tower shelvings things etc. That would give more space in the closet for the ugly stuff and in my opinion books add coziness to a living room.

Yeah, books in a closet....feel so sorry for them. Either read ' em over and over again, then I' d put them on shelves in the living room or sleeping room, or after only reading them once give away. Have to admit switched from reading printed books to Kindle.
I recently got rid of a Longchamp carrier bag too so I am relived I am not the only one to hold on to those bags. When you rolled your washer into the closet it was so satisfying. Here’s to your next project 🍸

OMG! I am bugging your videos as I do a house clean, because I am avoiding working on my kitchen makeover, lol. You said early this video that it had stagnant energy and needed to be cleaned- and also that's why houses get haunted because its dead energy just sitting there. While I might like the ghosts (my childhood home that my parents built, I am the second owner), THIS is sooooo true. Like my brothers and sisters cleaned out a lot of stuff from this house after Mt dad passed, bit also left a lot of stuff. And frankly I've kinda filled it back up to cocoon my grief/depression/myself from life! It too me 7 yrs to decide.to makeover the kitchen and it needed it 17 yrs ago (my parents were alive then). I cried taking screws out of cabinet hinges for goodness sake! Lol. But i just heard you say this and it hit me, this house if filled with stagnant energy that I am trying to overcome! Wow! I needed that!
Looks great!! Hoping your washing machine can come out easily with the door organizer there.

If you have room to replace the damaged shelf you’ll have options to space things so you can see them easier. Maybe when you’ve sold the musical instrument.
I used to keep all the fancy bags and gift bags and even grocery bags. I would use the nice clothing store/gift bags for gifts, but I've stopped collecting them now. I still keep grocery bags when I get them cuz I use them as trash bags for smaller trash cans and when I clean my cat box.
I definitely keep fancy bags!!! I use them Incase I need to take something somewhere. Or as a gift bag.. I even used one to keep my underwear in on top of a small dresser while I was trying to decide on my bedroom suite and while I was waiting on the 12 weeks it took for it to come in.. The bag looked nice sitting out🤷🏼♀️

You are so good Carla. I would’ve kept those old shelves at the back of the closet in case. I’m saying this as I have about 15 shelves sitting in my basement from our kitchen cabinets since we replaced them with drawers. I’m going to put them on craigslist free today!!

I also keep bags. Sometimes I go through and ditch some. But I definitely still have plenty. But the cute ones that are kinda common like Starbucks ( back in the day ) I would send home leftovers in them. I used to use them to bring my work to lunch in when I worked. I remember I worked at Dillard's in the summer in high school and would get cute bags from the makeup ladies :) I love that Samson has his own shelf.. I cracked up when I thought it was low enough that he might help himself to some extras 😃

@@TheCarlaProject Growing up in Iowa we never had a big store like Dillard's so it was pretty exciting going there in the summers. I loved that store and would get all my clothes there before coming back home for school, since I liked to have unique clothes. Living in WA state now we have Macy's and Nordstrom's. But of course they never quite live up to the times when we were teenagers and were obsessed with clothes. I've only been to Bloomingdales once in Chicago. We've never lived by one, but I liked it.
