Deceptive Weight of Maces and Clubs | Steel Mace | Clubbell | Mudgar | Gada

Спорт

A video on the exploration of the topic why the weight of a mace or club is so deceptive. People usually buy a mace or club that is too heavy for them when they start their swing journey. This is too bad and I hope that this video explains why this happens so often. it is just to say that I would advice to start low in weight with every swing or flow practice out there. This will be of tremendous benefit for you in the long run and you will always come back to the light weight. I promise. Enjoy the video, Harbert aka The Flowing Dutchman.

What many people don't understand about maces or clubs is they don't actually understand the concept of mass moment of inertia. It's not about the weight it's about the inertia it creates is what actually makes it challenging. There was a cricket bat that got released 10 years ago called Mongoose MMI ( where MMI stands for Mass Moment of Inertia). Most of the bat's mass will be on the end instead of a regular bat which makes it faster and more powerful compared to regular cricket bats. Really great content mate ✌

This actually reminds me a lot of archery, where there is a similar issue of beginners choosing bows which are way to heavy to draw for a beginner. And it doesn't matter if you are fit and strong in the gym, because typically the muscles that are engaged during archery aren't really utilised much in every day life, or in weight training sessions. So it's not uncommon that even fit and strong people get bad shoulder injuries because they didn't start with a beginner bow!! Sometimes these injuries are so bad that people can no longer continue with the sport. So by trying to rush into things they have actually set themselves back very far. That's why I'm starting with a very light mace for my first, just 3kg, but as this video shows that 3kg is deceptive, and should be good enough for a beginner like me to learn proper form and techniques, while giving myself the right conditioning to safely move up to higher weight.

Recently discovered the great gama and stumbled upon the gada. I have incorporated it into my training and made 11 pound gada using traditional method’s. At first it was kicking my but but after a few work outs and many of your vids I can confidently do the 360 as well as 10-2. Thank you again and the videos I enjoy the most is all the India content with the masters if you will. Thanks again and god bless.

Relatedly, very small increments in weight have a much bigger impact with clubs or maces than weights where there is a longer resistance arm than with a dumbbell. People don’t believe me until I let them compare a 2 pound club with a two and a half pound club.

The physics : Moment( Newton Meter) = Force( Newtons) x Distance (meters), Moment being the turning force about a pivot, and the pivot being our wrists. So, a mudgar of 3kg having length of 50cm(0.5m) would have a moment of 1.5Newton meter.

Very interesting! How does this relate to difference between a drop and a swing? What happens with a swing is that you also accelerate the club/mace by using your body/muscles. Or would it just be a way to measure differences between tools? Because a kettlebell is smaller so the amount of moment would be less.

  • @neuromanser6666

@@TheFlowingDutchman Yes, definitely the kettlebell would produce lesser moment( of force/ torque). The thing about drop and swing, I guess is similar to the eccentric and concentric phases of a movement. Torque/moment of force would be generated in both the cases. To simplify, let's consider a push-up. The going down, is the eccentric phase of the movement, similar to drop. While the pushing up is the concentric phase, similar to swing. So, if I am not wrong, then to do the swing quicker/explosive would be difficult and to drop slowly would be difficult... adding more resistance in this case.....

One of your best video explanations of technique. It fascinates me how each time I move up in club weight (mace or club bell), it's as if my technique learning starts all over. 10kg, 6kg, 4kg, 2.3kg... that's the order in which I bought my maces. What a fun mistake as I've worked my way up to the 10kg. At first even swinging my little 2.3 seemed a challenge until I had that "ah ha!" moment. I just bought a 12kg #whitelionathletics mace to add to my growing collection.

I am obese and have been sedentary. I started walking regularly (from 0 minutes to 30-60 min 6-7 days a week) and now I want to incorporate weight training. I bought a 6 KG Mace. Since I am de-conditioned the mace is a bit heavy to me to do PROPER technique. I have the muscles but my right shoulder and elbow are a bit stiff and in pain. (Prior injuries + inactivity) So I ordered a 3.5 KG mace. (This was the only one available to me) So there is NO SHAME to go down in weight. The mace cost me 40 Euros - my joints are priceless to me. Learn proper technique first - increasing the weight will come if you are consistent and healthy!

In a lot of countries you can start with a baseball bat, then add progressively heavier small plates. This gives a fair amount of progression. Once you buy your first club or mace you'll be experienced and make a good selection.

Everyone underestimates the weight impact of clubs/maces. They pretty much always go too heavy, and then get humbled or injured. Myself included. I don't have space to swing a mace, but I have a nice weight range of clubs. Love em.

Correct the mace has rotation component unlike the regular weights , the weight being further away from the base means even a 1 kg mace may require more force to rotate as it's moment of inertia is higher

I only use a 4.5KG mace, it's been 23-24 days, and the body weight is shredding off. Bought it on a whim 5 or 6 months ago, and didn't really know how to use it, and ended up hurting some muscles really badly. Also was obese with no muscle mass, probably on death's door. Started with walks, now i workout with the mace daily. Edit: did my first full 360 today, without anything in the body going hey stop that!

It’s quite different actually. Especially the clubs, since the steel versions usually have a thick metal handle which disrupts the weight distribution. With a gada you’ll find that the weight is also more at the end, meaning you can be less creative with it.
