    Remember, the Buff Dudes aren't actually talking to only men - they do sometimes call the listeners "dudes", but that's more their version of "guys" or "people", since it is more consistent with their own name "Buff Dudes". They sometimes explicitly say "dudes AND GIRLS" for emphasis.

    Eight years after you made this video, you're still helping people with their technique. I have watched a few others' videos, but this one really helped me figure out what I was doing wrong. I'm 6'2" & my back isn't the greatest. I was definitely not using proper technique up until today. Thank you!

    +Buff Dudes I liked the arcade press start thingy too. after watching this and listening to you I've decided squats are unnecessary if deadlifting is just a modified squat. but I'd rather do Romanian deadlifting or stiff leg deadlifting (thighs glutes calves grip) combined with squat (gluttes quads calves) to hit more muscles.

    +YangSword9x You missed the point of the video. He was showing bad form with how people try and turn the deadlift into a modified squat. They are very different exercises.

    Three personal trainers tried to explain deadlifts to me and nobody could do it. I watched about 100 tutorials and videos but still nothing. I tried it so hard at the gym but I always made some mistakes. Until I saw this video. I mean the thing that mostly helped me was the tip number 1, to keep your hands straight all the time, it's much easier to get proper form when you know that. Thank you guys :)

    Just think of your arms as cables, that tip helps a lot of people. With a deadlift, your arms do nothing but hold the weight, they have no part in actually lifting it. Slightly different when you start talking about cleans & snatches but in a conventional deadlift, NO ARMS! :)

    Thanks guys. I'm currently deadlifting 150kg (330lb), my trainer videoed my form for me and I realised I'm definitely guilty of rounding my back. I'm going to practice implementing your tips and record it again :)

    One big mistake is the look in the mirror. Overextending the head to see yourself in front in the mirror or rotate the head to the side to check if the back is unbowed.

    Wow! This was a great video! I am neither buff(yet) or a “dude,” but started weightlifting in January and have been a little nervous to try this. I shld also add, besides not buff or a dude, I am not young either!😄 At least chronologically! I have lost almost 70lbs this last year and have read study after study about sarcopenia.     I'm one of the smaller guys in my gym's free weight area and yet, 95% of the time, I'm the only one who ever does deadlifts (or free weight squats, for that matter) in there while all the grunting dudebrahs do nothing but bench/overhead press and biceps curls.

But there's always people at the benches, people using dumbbells for curls, etc. Only the squat rack is standing there in the corner with no one even looking at it. (Also, there is only one squat rack in the entire gym, but at least 5 smith machines)

    Mohd Taufik Mohammad Nooo, I mean of those ~9 hours I spend at the gym every week, 95% of the time (= 8.55 hours) no one is using the squat rack. I'm not saying I'm at the gym 95% of the week (that would be 159.6 hours).

    Chris That's my point. Perhaps people are using it when you are not there. I mean, even at my gym people seem to not do the deadlift, but I can't say for sure because the gym is open for 10 hours and I'm only usually there for a max of 2 hours. I just learned that at night, more experienced bodybuilders are working out at my gym, but at the time I usually go which is around 4pm, mostly there are just people who seem to have just started learning to work out.

    When I do the deadlift I usually pretend that I try to push the floor away from me with my feet. I have found that this makes me perform a very natural lift automatically.

    @@sparkleprizm199 If you are a beginner and weigh 125 lbs then your starting weight would probably be around 115-120 lbs (this includes the weight of the bar itself). If this feels too heavy then don't hesitate to start as low as about 70 lbs. The important thing is that you can perform all the lifts with good form and without getting injured, and then you will quickly improve from there.

    In my opinion everyone should start with bar + 2 lightest large plates (5kg for example), so 30kg total. Keep practising the movement until you feel no activation in your lower back whatsoever. SQUEEEEEEZE those glutes!

    If you have either thin plates or more than 2 plates, you need to secure them in place so then you get an even weight across the bar, if they are sliding around it can fuck your lift up.

    depends on the plates/bar. with the gym i'm currently at, i have to secure them. they move around constantly, fucking up my lift. with my previous gyms and my home gym, i never had to secure them

    +Cooper Carr Valsalva is a fantastic way to get a hernia or cause a cardiovascular event. If you cannot deadlift while breathing and using core musculature (both front, back, and rotational) alone to stabilize the spine, you are trying to lift too much and need to rethink your progression.

    +Cooper Carr I need no instruction on the purpose of valsalva. If you are looking at strongmen or competitive lifters, your argument is misplaced as those who say squats should exceed 100 degrees knee flexion. For strongmen and olympic lifters, it is OK because lifting weight is their performance measure. They will valsalva to get the absolute maximum lift (a trade of risk for benefit). For athletes who have a performance measure other than lbs/kg lifted, there is zero benefit for the added risk.

    Nah even lifting normal weigh like 200 lbs is directly benefitted from holding your breath. It just builds rigidity I don't come near passing out or really feel any stress on my body. BUT! I am honestly curious and not wanting to be an internet douche turd. What is another way in which I could breathe while doing pulls like the deadlift or squat?

    Disagree SOME with the hips too low tip (although you dont want to be too low). You want leg drive, having your hips to high CAN encourage back rounding, and you can lose power and leverage by starting too high. Depends on the stance too. If legs are wider apart than your hips can be higher

    Baconsammich Well yes. Getting lower lets you get your legs involved for more power which they should!! Why would anyone want to put all that force on the hamstrings and lower back? (Unless your lifting light) Its a compound movement! When I started adding leg drive my dead lift number when up and back back wasnt as sore..

    Hmm, good thing I saw this video when I did, having JUST started doing deadlifts, as the starting position, with the hip positioning, was where I was messing up a little - as in I had myself closer to squat than the mentioned bowing-esque position you mentioned (nothing a little adjustment (I.E raising them to where you demonstrated) couldn't fix though. :D )

    Look at your hamstring flexability. That limits a lot of people's deadlifts, and causes you to round your back lower or upper to compensate. If you want to keep deadlifting until u stretch out those hammy a raise the bar.not only that but make sure u can properly perform a hip hinge.

    Using your back to help lift? Your lower back is always helping to lift a big part of the weight, if not most of the weight! Lower back soreness (not pain) is normal!

    I'm glad you acknowledged the over/under grip. If you can handle the weight with an overhand grip, you don't need the over/under, and if your grip strength progresses with your deadlift, you'll avoid the precarious stretched bicep position of the underhand grip, which can be dangerous when handling heavy weight.     contraction of the lats and chest was my issue in not seeing my back flat in the mirror and was always slightly bent forward. I was trying to figure out why i couldn't keep my back completely straight and it wasn't the weight was heavy in this case it was that i just wasn't contracting the lats, bring the chest forward . Totally understand that one last feature of proper form on my dead lift. great video.
