Performance Notes
Well, if you’re gonna sing about a “prophet on the burning shore,” you can’t get more site-specific than a sunny beach on the Yucatan Peninsula. Maybe that’s why Dead & Company, on opening night of Playing In The Sand 2020, delivered such a potent performance of this stellar Bob Weir-John Barlow song which made its live debut with the Grateful Dead in early 1977, served as the opening track on the Terrapin Station album, and has remained a staple of Bob’s repertoire ever since, with the Dead and subsequent projects. The lyric, depicting someone walking the very thin line between spiritual enlightenment and madness, is perfectly served by the musical setting, in which a lilting reggae feel is knocked tantalizing askew by a tricky 7/4 time signature.

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. The inaugural tour kicked off in the fall of 2015 with two sold-out shows at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City and ended with two sold-out performances at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California.
Since then, the band has completed five tours, playing to more than 1.5 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record in 2017. Dead & Company’s 2018 Summer Tour ranked in the top 25 of the Top 100 Worldwide Tours and for the past two years, their Summer Tours ranked in the top 15 of the Top Global Concert Tours.

I see Bobby looking like Jerry and Johnny looking like Bobby from the days before Jerry left us. I never thought it could be this perfect again!!!
Bob saying "I'll call down thunder and speak the same " looking like moses/god. Wow

John has given Bobby the joy he has always deserved.! He will always be the glue… the bridge he and Phil connected Jerry to us.
Slow, but well played. Bob Weir is a class act. Love him so much. So grateful that the core 4 are alive still. Long live the Grateful Dead 💀! The jam at the end,🔥

How befitting. Jerry was often called Muhammad Garcia by fans. Bobby moses the estimated prophet. There is also an Egyptian poem. We now return our souls to the creator, as we stand on the edge of eternal darkness. Let our chant fill the void, in order that others may know. In the land of the night, the ship of the sun, is drawn by the grateful dead. Makes you think huh 😅

I love that dead and Co is keeping it going, but how can anyone compare this to when Jerry was alive? It's not just Mayer, but they're all just old and tired. They've been touring for like 55+ years. Listen to this then listen to the estimated prophet from Hartford CT (77 I think but maybe wrong)
I wish you would bring back live streams of complete shows with Deadco, Wolf Bros and, of course, the good ‘ole Grateful Dead. Those really helped me and, I’m sure, many, many others deal with the terrible situation that we all continue to face currently.

What a great team. What a hot team. Don't you worry about a thing.
Should have had the next song attached. 😅 one of my favorites
Band sounds pretty damn good to me.
Mayers versatility on the guitar is pretty incredible. Is he the best in any single genre, no, but that's why he fills in for Jerry so well, and he's not trying to be Jerry, so do us all a favor & stop comparing them. He's a blues guitarist first & foremost, but sadly most casual listeners only know John for his 'pop' hits. Enjoy the music & be grateful that Mayer gave us a few more years of terrific Dead to listen to.✌️
I freaking love Bob....
NICE! Come back To Cuyahoga Falls soon. 🙏🙏🙏

I c Bobby trying to look like Jerry plus he had to start taking singing lessons to sound like he used to ,a lot of sadness in that man!❤️❤️🌹🌹🐰🐇
John was learning the song...so they slowed it way down...just for him.
Bunny Hopp’N Mayer 🤣
The front men r so dressed up , it’s a beautiful thing !
Nice solo by JM
Ocean breezes blow! It was hard to light a joint in the crowd! Warm ocean wind......

I do have to give Bobby gredit for who he chose to b in his band , they r all so good ! Hora for Bobby ! ❤❤

🕺☄💙⚡❤💣💀
✌️🙌
Kreutzmann smiling throughout
John knows his place and shows respects for Bob,Billy, and Mickeys space and is the ultimate fan who has the talent and his world changed now that his time has come. We’re lucky they connected for this next chapter............the music never stopped...........
Jerry is the voice he hears ! I’m sure of it ? Bobby says he comes to him in dreams !
I will love them until the end of my time & then I hope to b with Jerry because he asked me about the hereafter & I told him he could go with God or b earth bound & b a ghost ! That was in 1988 at the last show I went to in Portland Maine !
Hmm 13:45 looks like one of Jerry!’s guitars. How cool-is that?
