day in the life as the only UI/UX designer at a startup

hi! here with another day in the life, but this time as an official UI/UX designer! i wanted to share what a typical day looks like working remotely and being the only UX designer at a startup. this opportunity has been difficult, yet rewarding. most of the time i'm teaching myself, learning from my teammates, and/or making mistakes, but it's something i'm trying to embrace and take in. i hope you enjoy watching!
see you soon,
jane

Thank you for sharing! I have just joined a start up company too as a ux designer (after graduating from a bootcamp) and for the past 1.5 months, the ambiguity of working at a start up amazes me. You’re pretty much in control of what your goals are. And yes! Proactiveness is def key… and alot of youtube vids lol

Right??? There is so much to figure out and change can happen at any time. Really cool to hear that you’re also working at a startup after bootcamp!! KZread has also definitely been my best friend for work haha

@@JaneYang honestly, I couldn’t really tell because I was recruiting for clients and it has never been my primary market but I believe that what matters to clients, and in general for any similar functions, is to have someone who always try and experiment new tools or technologies and who is not satisfied with what he/she learned in the context of his/her current role. When you are passionate about something, you will follow people in your niche on twitter, KZread, LinkedIn or any other social media and you get to know stuffs that you are not familiar with and it makes you curious. If you can demonstrate this mindset to a prospect of hiring manager: staying curious, eager to learn and going out of your comfort zone, it will open the door for roles you don’t even the skills for because they will see a strong potential in you

Glad you liked it! As for learning UX, I learn a lot from my CEO. He's not a UX designer but has a background in software engineering and has a lot of experience working alongside designers. To be honest, I have to be proactive in improving my skills. I watch a lot of figma youtube tutorials, invest in UX resources/courses, and keep in touch with other people from my bootcamp! This has helped me a lot.

Yess I got the opportunity immediately after my bootcamp to go work for a small Swedish travel agency In Sri Lanka so yeah, similar situation where I'm the only designer. Although in the future when I go back to Sweden I want to work on a little bit bigger company with senior designers I can learn from etc, it has been so nice now in the beginning to actually get the opportunity to structure my work however I want to. And yeah it sure is a learning along the way experience, and at least I feel like I've gotten pretty "wide" in my knowledge instead of super nisched, since you can't really focus too much on one thing, so that leaves a lot of doors open for the future too so that's fun!!

Im so interested in this type of work. I was interested in Marketing at first. Received a cool lil certificate through Google but I think UI/UX design may be what i could really see myself doing career wise. What is the best way to get started? Great video by the way!

Hi! I think a great way to start is to look up resources online and doing an entry course online for UX. If you find that you like UX, then I would consider seeking more in depth learning opportunities. Hope this helps, and good luck!
