Half orc bard is such a running joke but when you think about it, they're one of the races meant for bards, namely valour bards. A traveling magic warrior who collects tales of wisdom and heroics and keeps the traditions of their people alive in a culture that isn't inclined to writing books? Half orcs are made to be bards.

I have a half orc Bardlock. I used standard array and his strength was 8. With his part of the clan not allowed to fight, as they were only allowed to raise the traditions of the horde and perform. He's strong now thanks to his gauntlets of ogre strength.

I have a bard with thunder wave. He renames the spells in order to cast them. (You know, like "Chill" for frost spells and "How YOU doin?" for Charm, etc) I was fighting a drake and 4 kobolds. I walk up and say "What did I give you mom last night? THE CLAP!!!" Clapped his hands and thunder waved all 5 creatures into the river behind them. It was awesome!

Ah, I did a full born Orc Barbarian who outlived the group twice over due to his odd luck. Though he did die thanks to a Beholder once, only to return later thanks to the gods, only to permanently die literally a year and a half later to a Ancient White Dragon in solo combat.... as a gnome bard and dragonborn bard player. They have the best Cha. Also thank you, the half orc bard is the best joke/ will kill things class around. being able to have a great sword as a bard is nice, and you can have drums or bagpipes as an instrument... *puts on kilt* yeah.. its time.

Also to add to this I have now played a halfling Barbarian, and it's strong!

In my campaign, none of my seven players picked humans.

I tend to make weird characters, all female. Halfling Barbarian with a battleaxe named Kindness. Drow Barbarian covered in scars, barely speaks, eats every piece of food given to her and chosen by Eilistraee. Gnome Druid that dicks around with people as a cat. Halfling Druid that doesn't know she's a druid, travelling the world asking people to strip for academic purposes and randomly wild shaping based on strong emotions. An Aasimar Divine Soul Sorceress who loves healing through forehead kisses. A Halfling Wild Magic Sorceress with deep compassion who managed to be so kind to a Drow male he wanted to follow her. A half elf Shadow Sorceress who licks dead bodies to see if they're dead and came with a warning. When I introduced a human paladin into a game the DM was so confused. "So you're a human paladin? Nothing... odd?" Nope. "No....quirks?" Not really. "Define not really." She's a knight... "Oh...okay. No...licking things?" Nope.

I have been playing a paladin gnome for 3 years, when he first started he had very low int and wis so he would talk in broken English but had a very high cha score so everyone he met liked him. He would stand for Justice!, Glory!, And hoogies!! He also had to pray to his god before almost every turn.

The elf is the biggest god damn Mary Sue.... hahahahaha!

Michael DeLorenzo I couldn’t really imagine a big beefy elf barbarian running around beating people with a Greatclub and while some versions of fighter could work (mainly swords and bows) I couldn’t imagine one being that good with a Greatsword. Monks I guess could work because of how long they live for so long but paladins don’t really work because I also don’t imagine a elf wearing full plate clanking up behind someone and beating them with a Warhammer. If you want a Mary Sue in this game, play human, they can be basically whatever you want to be. Literally any class in The PHB can work with them and the option for an additional feat makes them much more versatile Edit: forgot about wood elves making great monks so I guess not

To be fair all elves and subspecies have EXTREME USE. I mean c’mon sea half-elves get a +2 to BOTH STR and CON. Plus if I of all people think playing a Kobold urchin arcane trickster is a good idea then playing ANY elf race is better. Edit: the plus 2 was to STR and CON

For Dark Elves...The way sunlight sensitivity is written - ie DIRECT sunlight - means it's easy for DMs to rule "as long as you aren't in direct sunlight or your target is you are fine" so in most locations (forests, dungeons, cities, etc) have enough shade or the like to prevent that problem. Also let's not forget they early on can cast Darkness, which though it can be a hindrance if you place the darkness ABOVE you to block out the sun you are likely going to be fine.

Drow with sunglasses is the single greatest thing in D&D.

I'm surprised more people don't talk about how underpowered the dragonborn race is. All you get is a resistance type and your breath weapon. The breath weapon is so weak it's a waste of an action to use, and if your resistance type is acid or lightning, that's really not common enough for it to be valuable as your only other feature. Tieflings, stout halflings, and Dwarves get fire and poison resistance respectively, which are the two most common elemental damage types, and look at all the other features they get on top of it.

It's a lot more realistic when you think about it, humans have bad night vision compared to most mammals. (But the actual reason is that each race got the ability for a different reason: Gnomes and Dwarves live underground, Elves have superior senses, Tieflings and Half-Orcs are related to scary edgy things that live in the dark.

Because, mechanically speaking, carrying a torch/lantern is a pain in the butt.

I used to play in this one group in high school. I played half orc Druid. I had the highest wisdom stat in the party because that’s where I put my best roll, and because the half-elf ranger rolled a shitty charisma, I also had the highest charisma of the party (it was only 14, everyone else just got shit numbers). I was incredibly useless in combat because of the way I roleplayed my character but it was still a lot of fun and I’ll always champion this combo.

When a half elf and a half orc in the same adventuring party _get busy…_ looks up custom race table.

The best thing about gnomes is their Gnome Cunning Feature. They have advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma saving throws. Which is very useful against spellcasters or things that try to control you.

Half-orc rogue is the most fun combination I've ever played, especially with a 1 lvl dip in fighter just for that duelist style

Drow is great to pick if you want to play as warlock, especially if your patron is undying or hexblade. You are getting not only cool looking character but super powerful

My favorite combination is a Faun Bard (Homebrew race I found) It fits so well

"Dovakin Dovkin, I do not know the words. But I'll still sing Dovakin, for the joy that it brings". Love pop culture references and thr like. As for the chrs, mayhap Dwarf, Tiefling and Half Orc in me interests, butI would probably be better served as a human chr because if you were to make a Half Orc chr that is similar in appearance to the Hulk, the chance of the dice roll can potentially land you in an embarrassing spot, for the expectation of the chr. For me personally, maybe a spell caster or a cleric, or something?

I can play most races (except for dragonborn and tiefling). I tend to play humans more often. I do like playing a dark elf paladin. Speaking of dark elf, I have a couple work arounds for light sensitivity. One borrowing from 3.5e feat daylight adaptation. The other is a custom background "surface dweller." Enjoy watching your videos.

High elf rogue is fun. Use that free cantrip to aid in your sneaky sneak and you can pick a subclass that’s not strictly arcane trickster to do it (mine’s a scout)

half orc swashbuckler. str based rogue, roleplay wise he smashes locks and traps till they no longer function. he uses a great sword

My most recent character is a half orc half elf Cleric, but I usually end up fighting with melee weapons anyway. Her father is Salitar the Coward, and her mother is Gorra the Lonely.

Ay I'm an avid drow lover and the whole sunlight sensitivity thing can be quite easily fixed if you work with it for a bit. I've played many drows in a variety of different types of campaigns and, yes, they are more helpful general in deep dungeon quests but literally, drows are so fucking awesome to play and give some great storylines... Personally love playing magic classes with them, especially warlocks but damn bards are fun.

I give my drow character players the option (at creation or during downtime) to trade down superior darkvision to regular darkvision in exchange for getting rid of sunlight sensitivity. You spend enough time in the sun, you'll adjust to it; but once you do, you need to spend a long time underground again to go back.

GUYS, HE USED VARRIC AS THE DWARF REFERENCEPICTURE. Needless to say; my day is complete

Either playing as a race with a lower than normal movement speed just take the movement feet which gives you 10 extra feet of movement and takes away rough Terrain disadvantages

You are a warlock and specialize in Charisma? Cool, find a race that pump ups your Charisma. You are a strength-focused golden boy? Find something that inherently gives you more strength.

I think the brass dragons are supposed to be the green dragon metallic equivalent, their gas attack isn't necessarily poison though but more or less sleeping gas.

Long story short. It's weird if a race can't see in the dark.

Fun fact the tallest gnome and the shortest dwarf are the same height. Gnome tops out at 4' and dwarfs minimize out at 4'. This also means that halflings are smaller than gnomes and that honestly does 1d4 psychic damage to me

For a drow or the UA dhampir, my solution is to get tinted brown-glass goggles. Medieval sunglasses!

You know what? One of the characters I had the most fun playing was my High Elf Barbarian. She was meant for a just for fun one off adventure between campaigns but we got attached to these characters too much so they ended up campaigning against a Demon Lord.

It's official but its listed as a variant rule in the DMG which means the DM can choose to exclude it from their sessions if they want
