Samurai were archers first. Swords were a backup weapon. Then when the sengoku jidai kept raging on, armies got bigger and bigger, and noble, armoured and well trained samurai would enter melee to completely massacre the hordes of untrained, ill-equipped peasants sent against them. Then guns came along, and were quickly adopted by the samurai because they were guns.

  • @Longlius

Not just that - for a brief period, the Japanese were the premiere producers of firearms. They produced guns in greater quantity and quality than any of the European powers. When the sengoku jidai came to an end though, they stagnated and never really recovered in the firearms department.

Which is what happens when you isolate yourself for two centuries. Then the borders are opened because the U.S. comes along with steam powered metal ships that fire explosive shells, and while you may have the most exquisite matchlocks in the world, that is largely because everyone's already been through flintlocks and is now adopting breechloaded rifles.

  • @Longlius

It's worse even than that. Firearms actually fell out of fashion during the sakoku period, so military men capable of effectively using firearms basically disappeared. The only people who were acquainted with firearms were the peasantry (who used them for hunting and pest control). Guess who suddenly had a problem with a foreign-supported peasant insurrection on their hands? The Shogunate.

He doesn't have to worry about it dying because I can always make a new one and it's just incredibly fun having a fully armored Halfling wielding a Lance charging at a 20 foot tall Fire Giant from the back of a dog made of iron.

Yes, as a high level fighter you make 4 attacks with each action. Then you use action surge to repeat. Better yet, combing all your samurai abilities you can make 18 attacks in one round. Bonus action to get advantage for the turn (fighting spirit), rapid strike to trade one attack with advantage for two flat attacks, action surge for four more attacks. There's 9. With strength before death you get to take a full turn just before dropping to 0 hit points. Repeat the first turn to make 9 more attacks or 5 attacks and drink a greater healing potion to not fall unconscious. That's 18 attacks or 14 and escaping death.

@@firstnamelastname7298 I mean, technically a 20th level Samurai fighter can attack up to 18 times in one round, if you go down to 0 hitpoints during said round and uses Action Surge twice during each of your turns. 14 of these with advantage. Paired together with Sharpshooter and the Elven Accuracy feats (giving you 14 attacks with triple advantage) and 4 normal attacks, we're talking about pretty insane amount of damage in one round.

Yes, theyre good on a mount, but I played a Halfling Cavalier who only had a mount in one fight, and almost immediately left the mount to wrestle down a giant bird. Maybe its just me but the non magic fighter is the best archetype along with the non magic rogue. In a world of magic weilders bending or even breaking the very fabric of reality itself to fight, you use nothing but your wits, dexterity and strength of body to decimate the competition. A wizard casts a fireball and you shrug it off screaming "I've taken cannon balls to the face, what's a tiny candle flame going to do!?" And you decapitate the wizard in an instant.

@@aliallail9874, you only get the fourth attack at level 20, which severely blows over the fighter. To match the damage that the fighter is doing with 2 attacks, then 2 more with action surge, all the paladin has to do to exceed the damage is pop 2 level 1 divine smites and exceed the damage of the fighter, and since the fighter can only action surge only once until 17 (which is way to high of a level to finally boost the fighter's primary ability), whereas the paladin at fifth level can smite 6 times per long rest, and the paladin's healing blows the fighter's out of the water. I don't care that the fighter is bland, all I care about is that the fighter is mechanically subpar to both the paladin and barbarian. The fighter is the barbarian without the resistances that make the barbarian awesome, and it is the paladin without the spells, smites, and healing that makes the paladin awesome. The fighter is mechanically subpar (compared to barbarian and paladin), and nothing will change that, unless the fighter gets 3rd attack level 9, and you get a second use of action surge at level 11. Otherwise, the fighter is just a barbarian or paladin that lost their class features.

Shield- take sentinel, take shield mastery. stand in the midst of your allies, use sentinel to stop someone dead in their tracks, and then when your turn comes around, shield bash them to knock them prone to let your allies around you pummel them. for this you're going to want some of the support options from battlemaster maneuvers like maneuvering attack (flank for advantage on that shield bash) or disarming attack. Polearm-allies? who needs em. anyone who approaches the party will die unless they are ranged. also handy to get the dm to make a deal with you to let you pick up the tunnel fighter fighting style later. You want sentinel, and polearm mastery. Approach the party? AoO (attack of opportunity) Attack one of the party members that isn't you? AoO. Try to run? Stop them from running away AND AoO. playing like this lets you tank very effectively, since they essentially HAVE to target you. Be warned, enemies may start showing the mobile feat much more frequently.

Fighter is my favorite class. Because of this I’ve made my own archetypes that are kind of OP, but they’re also designed for Homebrew lenient parties... Here it is... You’ve studied weapons like a wizard studies spells. Like a wizard may have a favored school, you have favored weapons. Swords. You take the art of the blade seriously and have turned an otherwise limited weapon, into a tool of sheer dominance and grace. Lvl3: Duel Duelist (You must have the two-weapon fighting style) When you carry two swords your AC is increased by +2 instead of +1 and you gain +2 to all attack rolls or Graceful Brute (You must have the great weapon fighting style) When you carry a two handed sword (or glaive) you gain +1AC and +4 damage on all attacks with two handed swords (or a glaive) or En Guarde! (You must have the dueling fighting style) When you carry one handed sword you get +1AC and can flip a coin for a 1/2 chance to parry an incoming attack, but only one attack Lvl7: Way of the sword You have come to understand the significance of the blade and are almost one with it. Any sword you are wielding cannot be removed from your hand, even by magic. You can make a DEX check to strike projectiles out of the air with your sword. You can make a CHA check to intimidate with your sword or substitute the CHA with DEX Lvl10: Challenger If you come across another sword wielder you can challenge them to a non lethal duel with only swords. No magic, no healing items, no enchantments unless they are on your sword. If you win then you gain a permanent +1 to all attack rolls with the particular sword you used, this can only be applied to two swords if you are a Duel Duelist. If you lose then you lose either 5 gold or a sword of your choosing. If you cheat then you gain debuff called Liar’s Blade that will make all attacks with any of your swords deal half damage (rounding down) and you will have disadvantage with all of your special skills. This debuff can only be removed if you win a duel with the debuff or surrender the sword you used when you cheated Lvl15: Sword Dancer You can make a CHA check with either your STR or DEX stat against other sword wielders Lvl18: Sword Master Any attacks made against you with a sword are parried unless they roll an 18 or higher on their attack roll and you automatically strike out all projectiles that are not magical. In addition, you can target specific body parts, except for the head, without disadvantage when using a sword Lvl20: Sword God All attacks with your sword are considered as magical even if the sword is not and you can now deflect all projectiles that are not AOEs. Also, if you die you can come back to life in the last location you won a duel and will have only your armor and swords on you

I'm currently playing a bolt-slinger (Crossbow Expert + Sharpshooter), and for flavor his hand-crossbow is a spring-tension gnome-work. The weapons I gave him are the hand-crossbow (1d6 piercing), a scimitar (1d6 slashing), and a maul (2d6 bludgeoning), just to cover all his bases. I went Champion with his archetype because Arcane Archer only effects longbows and shortbows.

Hi, just to be clear, at 2:09, second wind doesn't let you fall and go back up because it takes a bonus action. When you are knock down, you can't take actions nor bonus actions (that's the incapacitate part of the knock down). Therefore, you can't go down and go back up. What you can do with the help of a good friend is to take back one hp and then use as a bonus action the second wind ability. It takes a bit of coordination. To get one hp, the person can cast a spell, be a paladin, use a potion, utilise an ability (like the rally maneuver from the battlemaster) OR have the "healer" feat and use one charge of a med kit. These are some examples. Good game.

People really underestimate the damage output of a fighter. That superiority dice damage basically doubles your damage dice on each attack, and abilities like Action Surge and Riposte allow you to gain more attacks than you otherwise would - and this is a class that already gives you 4 attacks if you stick with it. All of those abilities also recharge on a short rest, so you will be essentially a coked-out slap-chop. Closest comparison I guess would be a Paladin, which can deal spectacular burst damage. However, you gotta burn those daily spell slots to smite, and they only max out at 2 attacks. Some of those spell slots can be useful for things other than smiting too, so Paladin definitely rewards you for playing support.

  • @roamingthereal4060

    @roamingthereal4060

    5 жыл бұрын

Don't use superiority dice for extra damage unless it's after you crit to get quad damage rolls. Riposte is terrible when compared to the options like precision attack and trip attack. Trip attack is a death sentence to most creatures and precision attack will hit harder (because of scaling +damage by mid-game or feats like GWM/sharpshooter at level 1) and hits more often than riposte.

I'm a new player and DM, me and a friend take turns behind the screen. I play a Dragonborn rogue, whose clan was murdered when she was a baby and she has this crazy skewed perception of Dragonborn society, thinking clan comes before everything and feeling lost because her clan is gone. My DM friend plays a Dragonborn fighter who is an enforcer of a thieve's guild. He was sold to the criminals because his parents had a debt to them, and now he's their slave. He hates his clan and is glad they're gone. He's from the same clan as my rogue... So the two of them ran into each other and my rogue was wearing her class Insignia. Now knowing that her clan sold children to criminals, my rogue had an identity crisis and left to confront her father who always told her that the clan was honourable. We left the fighter with the guild, by he followed us to kill my rogue... This is going to be an interesting cat-and-mouse game because they'll never be in the party at the same time as one of us DMs. I really like these two, and it shows how versatile a fighter can be.

Yeah numbers are good but if I wanted to play build-a-gimmick I’d play a rogue.

13 13 14 14 10 9. People pondering how multiple ability scores dependent Edritch Knight is (and Purple Knight/ Samurai to some extent), this is a useful set. Especially Dex Ek's: put the 10 in Str, the 9 in Cha, go Variant Human. 14 Dex Con, Int, Wis. Go to town.

I really missed the warlord class. Once I was a warlord satyr with a Halberd.

I would have based the battle masters manuverability dice on the characters intelligence score and/or maybe added in an ability that would allow you to add your intelligence modifier to your attacks

Haven't played DnD since 4e. Just like watching vids on it. Kills time. However, I've been wanting to try out 5e but am really dissapointed that Warlords aren't a thing anymore. It's nice that they gave us a Warlord-esque Fighter sub-class but from your phrasing, it doesn't seem like it quite matches the Warlord. Warlord was my favorite followed by the Warden in 4e because Warlords fit my favorite playstyle as a Utility Tank. Being right on the front line, giving massive bonuses to ally AC or Attack, Saving, or Damage Rolls.
