David Lee Roth ☠ TV Interview ☠ Van Halen 1984 tour

Музыка

What do you feel about what Van Halen is now, 1984?

Well I like to think that Van Halen has completely changed the face of modern music as we know it.
I'll explain that 'cause it sounds preposterous initially.
There's a huge faction of people who try and mimic Van Halen, copy it, play lickety-split like Edward does or they try and get the Alex Van Halen drums' sound and that sort of thing.
And the other faction of individuals, musicians, which is much larger of course, are so revolted by Van Halen music and the way I do interviews and etc etc that they're forced to come up with some very substantial alternatives, musically speaking, and that's where new wave comes from
Do you take credit for all of this?

Oh absolutely, absolutely.
One of the things that you have been doing regularly is martial arts and this is something I know you take very seriously, you work very hard at it, you are now also incorporating it in the 1984 tour.
There are many different styles of martial arts. And people, they usually conjure up one specific vision in their head when you say karate or kung fu or something like this. And they usually think of either Bruce Lee working over somebody at an airport somewhere or they think of Chuck Norris trying to get to the end of another movie and on and on and on like this.
What I've been adding to the show is a lot like dance but it's a little too aggressive to qualify as chorist dancing. It's not the kind of movements that you'll see behind Stevie Nicks on her latest video.
But it is very eloquent, it's a very articulate kind of thing. I've been training with several really well acclaimed teachers back in California and you'll see a lot of them represented in the show. Chances are you won't even recognize the martial arts.
Please make me aware of mistakes!

Aye, this is the same interviewer who interviewed John Lennon 4 years previously. She or her boss altered the questions that were asked, as to why he came up from the 'underground'. Because Abbie Hoffman had recently reemerged in 1980, so they tied Lennon, Hoffman etc. Media are the bloody same, creating conflict when there is none. Dave was always eloquent in his answers, as seen here too.

(2/2) LR: How? DLR: Well, I know for a fact that to a small degree, we've bred a small legion of imitators, copycats, mimics, people who are using VH for their prime and sole inspiration. But even more important than that, are all the people who are just disgusted and revolted by our music and our presence and our appearance and the way I do interviews, and they've been forced to come up with some very substantial musical alternatives to Van Halen type rock, and that's why we have new wave.

(1/2) Journalists are such falsifiers. This is how this part of the interview came out in the Rock video magazine in July 1984: DLR: Well, Van Halen has absolutely changed the face of pop music as we know it permanently and forever.
