Somewhere here is an interview with Martha Quinn speaking about meeting Dave. She laughingly looks back at being young, serious and determined to get to the heart of "Who David Lee Roth REALLY is." All the while she doesn't quite realize that he's driving this interview and she's along for the ride. Watching this now, I can see what she's talking about and I find it very endearing. And Martha remains one of my favorites.

David Lee Roth is one of a kind. His enthusiasm for "rock and roll", performing and life in general is very infectious. Even people who don't care for "rock" music can't help but admire his lust for life. David Lee Roth always partied like a "rock star" from the get-go. I wish I was a guest at one of his parties :-)

Best used car salesman, and probably overall personality, rock will ever see. Music bios are some of my favorite reading, and David's "Crazy From The Heat" is in it's own league. I'm reading it again, currently (probably approaching my tenth time), and I look forward to the next paragraph as much as I ever did. Best of all, the most fascinating and compelling stories have nothing to do with music.

There's an interview, I'm pretty sure it was on MTV, where Dave was asked about why Van Halen doesn't get the critical reception that someone like Elvis Costello gets, and Dave's response is something like "Who cares what the critics think? The only reason they like Elvis Costello is because he looks like them!".

The thing, among several things, that was great about Dave, and Van Halen, was that nothing was contrived. Nothing he utters here is a put on. He could care less about what others thought - and there were plenty of people back then who didn't care for him at all. "Original" is a word that gets over-used, but he was an original, and as perfect for his time as the Beatles were for their time. Van Halen was perfect for their time. And Martha Quinn was a sharp young lady who was passionate about all the people she interviewed back in the day.

Like him or hate him. Despite his arrogance and full-of-himselfness, you have to admit he's a smart and eloquent guy. His words are a constant and consistent flow, not a single "like" or "you know" in between. He should coach a few athletes who always forget that they're actually also paid entertainers as soon as they walk of their respective fields, rinks or courts.

Dave's comment about Van Halen's music "spilling all over your turntable and ruining the rest of your records" and how their music has "that combustion to it" backs up my theory that Dave was the reason why the VH records he sang on were so short. Back when Eat 'Em And Smile came out, Steve Vai was on the cover of Guitar Player, I think, for the first time. And the interviewer asked about why the record was so short, and Steve says "We recorded more songs, but Dave wanted this to be the loudest record on the planet", which requires the lathe that cuts the vinyl to cut really deep, and thus, you lose bottom end if a given LP side is longer than circa 15-18 minutes. And that's exactly what happened with all the Van Halen records up to and including 1984: they're all around 32-33 minutes long. And I think Dave had something to do with that, like he was thinking "Van Halen music wilL DESTROY your stereo" or something like that. Notice that 5150 is something like 40 minutes long, which was the standard approx. LP length for that era.

Roth is a shrewd and driven business man and this persona while authentic, was not how he usually behaved. It's well researched and a great read. "The Making of Van Halen". All new material, no rehashing.

Van Halen transcends the musical, it's an attitude more than anything. You're thinking about how you feel when you listen to VH not the notes or the techniques involved. You certainly can listen to it for those things because Ed and Al are so talented, but you primarily listen for the emotional content.
