At the end of this interview they had Dave sign an Eat ‘Em And Smile LP that they gave away. I still have it 37 years later.

Eat em and Smile was easily one of the best albums of 86. The band absolutely smoked, and Dave delivers a full throated vocal performance. Songs like Shy Boy and Elephant Gun are so freaking heavy! What a great, great era for Diamond Dave

@@lazarus1672 - I saw G3 in 2001 with Petrucci, Satch, Vai (Then Eric Johnson came out at the end to jam since we were in Austin and he lives there). I went to G3 because I was/am a huge Vai and Satch fan. I had heard 'Pull Me Under' from Dream Theater, and I knew Petrucci was a great guitar player but that's all I really knew. I left there and couldn't stop thinking about Petrucci's songs the whole way home back to San Antonio. Those songs he did, and eventually released on his subsequent solo album, were just SO cool sounding to me. After that I became a huge Dream Theater/JP fan.

Saw the Eat Em and Smile tour. One of the best bands collectively I've ever seen. Vai, and Shennan are world class musicians, but being a drummer. I was blown away with Bissonnet's drumming. One of the most underrated, best drummers I've ever seen live. They Rocked the roof off that auditorium. Never listened to VH after Roth's departure.

That entire band is a virtuoso quad. Dave was extremely smart not to go out and just try to put together a Van Halen replica band. As VH evolved (or devolved, depending on your perspective) with Sammy, Dave evolved with Vai, Sheehan, and Bissonette. They were all top tier stage performers too.

Finally. A statement that is completely underrated. Being a drummer, he killed it. One of the best I'd ever seen live, and I've seen Peart, and Buddy Rich. Very, very underrated drummer Doesn't get enough acknowledgement i.m.o. But the drumming community realized it, if no one else did.

I'm still waiting for Dave and HIS band to hit Vegas again! I think he was fine with Steve Vai and the others. His vision was different from Van Halen and that was what drew them apart.

I was one of the most obsessed VH fans on earth. As a guitarist I thought EVH was a god and DLR the greatest front man of all time. When they went separate ways I just KNEW I was going to prefer VH's album over Daves - if only because I was already a big Sammy Hagar fan (Standing Hampton remains a favorite). But it didn't work out that way! I didn't really *dislike* 5150, but IMO "Eat 'em and Smile" continued the Van Halen legacy much more faithfully than 5150.

Same here. I had a poster of EVH on my bedroom wall and thought, okay, Dave's gone, now they're really gonna rock! 5150 came out and I listened to it a lot but it got old fast. Then Eat em and Smile and I was blown away! How could another guitarist be as good (or better) than Eddie. Eat 'em stayed in my cassette player in the car while 5150 collected dust in the glovebox.
