For some bizarre reason, Bowie hated this version. He later covered it on a more recent live album, but it was just OK. This original version ROCKS. DB R.I.P.

Agree first time I have ever heard this, listening to Bowie now you see and read about this song on Wiki saying it never made any no commercial success! triggers me that to point of why? its a Merseybeat style shame, admire Bowie for being different, cos most music industry is manufactured anyway, always has been..

If it had, do you think David would have gone off on his own and became who he was? I don't. He probably wouldn't have taken the same path and would have been held back.

Be grateful they didn’t take off. Had they have taken off, we may not have the Bowie we know and love. We may just have all songs like this and none like Let’s Dance, China Girl, Lazarus, Space Oddity, Life On Mars, and all the other odd and alternative songs we have now. Had they have taken off, Alternative music wouldn’t be like it is now

Still don't understand WHY - or HOW - he went from rockin' like this in '64, to his somewhat clumsy attempt at doing Tommy Steele-style music with his first album in '67. Damn record labels!

  • @maruka1716

He didn't write this one. He started by learning from classic blues songs, like a lot of rockers. That helped develop his performance skills, but he still had to come up with his own song-writing style. His early writing efforts are mostly experimenting with themes and techniques. But that experimentation paid off, and I'm glad he did it.

Degree7 Old hat for some in the USA maybe. But USA style beat music couldn't be heard in the UK untill Telstar linked up for the first live radio TV transmissions. So it was emerging as new wave beat in the early sixties come from music imports from west coasts ports. Other wise people were listening to the mid 1950s Rock 'n' Roll from the USA artists such as Bill Hailey who came over becoming sucessful over here.
