Lyrics
A small Jean Genie snuck off to the city
Strung out on lasers and slash-back blazers
Ate all your razors while pulling the waiters
Talking 'bout Monroe and walking on Snow White
New York's a go-go, and everything tastes right
Poor little Greenie, ooh-ooh
Keep her comin'
The Jean Genie lives on his back
The Jean Genie loves chimney stacks
He's outrageous, he screams and he bawls (Jean Genie)
Jean Genie, let yourself go, whoah
Sits like a man but he smiles like a reptile
She love him, she love him but just for a short while
She'll scratch in the sand, won't let go his hand
He says he's a beautician and sells you nutrition
And keeps all your dead hair for making up underwear
Poor little Greenie, ooh-ooh
The Jean Genie lives on his back
The Jean Genie loves chimney stacks
He's outrageous, he screams and he bawls (Jean Genie)
Jean Genie, let yourself go, whoah
He's so simple-minded, he can't drive his module
He bites on the neon and sleeps in a capsule
Loves to be loved, loves to be loved
Oh, Jean Genie lives on his back
The Jean Genie loves chimney stacks
He's outrageous, he screams and he bawls (Jean Genie)
Jean Genie, let yourself go, whoah
Go!
Go!
The Jean Genie lives on his back
The Jean Genie loves chimney stacks
He's outrageous, he screams and he bawls (Jean Genie)
Jean Genie, let yourself go, whoah
Go, go go!
About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

I'll second that. Same with Roxy Music Guitarist Phil Manzanera, though thank heavens he is most definitely alive and well! Both David and Bryan Ferry always liked to work with different musicians to create different ambience and dynamics within their various stages of writing. Mmm 🤔. Sometimes the grass ain't always greener, eh? R. I. P Mick Ronson. Jamming up there in heaven with the most awesome band ever!!! Much love and R E.S.P E.C.T to all you guys and gals, I hear Duke Ellington is playing rock'n'roll these days... 😊

Deserve more? He was great and everyone knows it, Bowie was the star and that's how it was.MR didn't have a bad career but just couldn't put his head above the parapet and so wasn't as famous.Guy worked with Dylan, Mott the Hoople, Ian Hunter, Morrissey. Pretty good to be fair

Indeed u are. From the start of rock until 1995 there were so many historical shows by amazing bands people had the opportunity to see. Since then i cant really think of anybody at such a level. Rock n roll died in 95. I was aware enough to see and feel it fade out and followed up by the worsed years in music history. Endless number of boy bands and girl pop groups inserted their superficial synthetic filth over everything for so many dark cold years. Those years were so hard to get through alot of people didnt make it as their very being and will to live was just callously drained crushing their spirit and hope things one day things might go back to normal. Its been almost 20 yrs since it ended and we are still dealing with the aftermath and bodies. So many lost

Wow!!! Your old... Like myself. Oh well, was fun while it lasted I suppose. As was saying, I too had my mind " polluted" by Mr. Bowie and his ilk and should think I'm the better for it now. As I was the youngest of the litter of six children I found myself exposed to many flavors music, of which I am eternally grateful for. By and by they've crafted a beautifully unique tapestry of sublime colors interwoven with Rich memories and curious textures. Truly a thing exquisitely rare but I don't keep it hidden, then again seems a waste that I should display it to those who lack vision and understanding. But alas the Lord has indeed blessed me with two young men, whom find great delight in the aforementioned article of beauty. The symbiotic cycle is nearing an end and then I shall rest. Tip of the hat to you Mr. Bowie and you as well. 😮

Someone put this song on a turntable and cranked the sound through some Bose 901 speakers. [ Loves To Be Loved ], don’t we all? Bowie sure had a way with words.
This features Cyrinda Fox ( girl with short platinum hair), a girl who happened to be just hanging out at same hotel Bowie was at, in LA, I believe. This was the start of her modeling career, Bowie liked her look & featured her in what was a prelude to stylized & highly produced music videos that launched MTV into existence. 1972/1973 was the infancy of this sort of media. Cyrinda instantly became famous among the rock 'n roll community, going on to a modeling career, minor acting career. What she's really known for is her personal life. After the Bowie cameo, she arrived in NYC to continue modeling & began dating, then marrying David Johansson, lead singer of glam rock band, The New York Dolls (he always reminded me of what the son of Mick Jagger & Steven Tyler would look like), speaking of Aerosmith, Cyrinda had a notoriously wild affair with Steven Tyler, of Aerosmith, who apparently was a friend of Johansson. Cyrinda left her New York Doll for Steven Tyler, as soon as divorce was granted, she & Steven Tyler walked this way into the wedding chapel & were married. They had one child, daughter, Mia Tyler..

The Jean Genie, 1973, will always be my favourite David Bowie song, The guitar work of Mick Ronson, is legendary. 1970-1975 is the BEST five years of music by Mr David Robert Jones!
This is what started my it for me. My Bowie obsession. Picture the scene, a 13 /14 year old middle class laddie, first disco, local village hall, scrubbed up to the nine and a halves in new clothes, bought just for the occasion. Place packed, DJ plays The Jean Genie. Everyone to a man and woman up on the dance floor, singing and stamping their feet to the riff. Never seen or heard anything like it, thought the wooden floor was going to crash. Instead it was Bowie crash landing into my world and I never looked back. That sense of community, the energy and power of youth has always stayed with me. Thank you Mr David Bowie, you changed my life.

Life changing music since the 70's. Thank you Ziggy. please RIP. Your amazing work is done here. See you again. Thanks to the Spiders too, RIP Mick Ronson & Trevor Bolder.
I always like how at 3:02 and for much of the rest of the video, David Bowie sings directly to Mick Ronson. It seems to suggest that he knows he has a good guitarist, who is greatly responsible for the success of his act
with out doubt this is the pinacle of bowie and ronson together RIP both of you both genius musicians
Super classic glam! One word: BOWIE
Wish that these so-called classic rock FM radio stations would play more songs like this instead of the so very tired worn out crappola they do play way too much. Classic rock song from Bowie!

Here in Fresno, CA we used to have an “oldies but goodies” station that played everything from the 60s - 80s - and then suddenly it was changed to like like mariachi music. It was about the only good station of classic rock. And we haven’t been driving much so much anymore but when we did, we’d put it on Bowie, or Hamilton”, and even Broadway.

Bowie came like a thunder at this Time!!
Simply put, some people were born to be performers. RIP David Bowie!
The best ticket in the story of rock'n'roll Bowie + Ronson.
I’m lucky enough to live down the road from where Bowie grew up, I get to walk past the bar where it all started so many years ago👍

Both Ronson and Bowie now belong to the ages. This great song ROCKS. CRANK IT UP!!! As David sings here from both the heart and gut!
No one has lived up to Bowie in all these years. There is just no one like him. Im only early 30s but i was brought up on him by my Dad and my mind was blown aged 4 and is still blown ❤❤❤ when he died it felt like i had lost a family member 💔
Love that little riff that Mick Ronson plays in the song at a couple of places- Genius
I have loved his hair in every performance! That voice of his will go forever!!

Gritty grinding beautiful performance from start to finish!
Still listening 50 years after it first came out!
That one short shot of the Mars Hotel is so freaking iconic.
Saw Bowie in 1976 on the Station to Station tour, he played this and it still ranks as one of the best concerts I ever saw. Just amazing. All I can say.

BOWIE+MIKE RONSON = their best!
They didn't have videos back in 1972, but leave it to Bowie to be ahead of the curve. This was created as a promotional film clip for the song, and stands up even today when compared to other music "videos"

Good observation about the Blues. They “borrowed” the Blues riff. That da da da da riff is Black Blues music. They really should pay at least symbolically a tithe 10 percent of the royalties from this song to a Blues foundation or organization that helps Blues musicians because that Riff is as old as time and is in many Blues songs!

Bowies a ledgend n always will be musical genius. Its a fact his works timeless❤❤❤
Bowie once said that Woody was the only drummer that really "got" him in terms of being the right fit for the sound he wanted from his songs. And he once said he wished someone else sang his songs because he never really liked his own voice. I loved it. I mean come on "Lady Grinning Soul", "Word on a Wing", "Supermen", wow!!

My very first CD/Album I ever owned thanks to my mom was his album 'The Best of David Bowie 1969-1974.' The Jean Genie was the first track on this album and every single time I hear this song start, it brings back so many damn good memories!!!!!!!!! I hope he's resting peacefully and still making sweet music in the stars!!!!
