A true original. This is his "Plastic Soul" phase (funk, r&b). So many incarnations. Next one; "Heroes", live in Glastonbury.!

For Bowie soul and funk: Try cuts from Bowie's Young Americans album with Luther Vandross back-up singers and David Sanborn on saxophone, like Somebody Up There Likes Me, Win, Fascination, Right and Can You Hear Me. Also Carlos Alomar funk on Secret Life of Arabia (Heroes album). His Let’s Dance album produced by Chic’s Nile Rogers (and it’s all good!). From Station to Station album: Stay. Also Black Tie, White Noise with Al B. Sure.…Tonight with Tina Turner... Knock on Wood (David Live, 1975) A friend of the the Black community - complained to MTV about Black videos being relegated to early morning. Married to Somali super-model Iman.

The vibe of James Brown hovers over this track. It's what Bowie/Lennon/Alomar had in mind to channel, that funk root base of the song. Lennon has an interview about this song on video, it's quite interesting. You can hear Lennon somewhat buried with the high call back "Fame" in response to Bowie's initial call and response vocals. Then there's one backing line Lennon does in his nasal falsetto you can pick right up towards the end of the song. He and Carlos Alomar on the guitars on this song are stellar.

My first exposure to Bowie was his late 1960's "space oddity" phase, I sort of zoned out on him during his 'glam' phase. He got my attention back front and center once he metamorphized into something completely different this album. And in retrospect, I subseqiently discovered his 'glam' phase work was just as good.

Bowie songs to do: His first big hit "Space Oddity", "The Man Who Sold The World", "Life On Mars", "Heroes", "Cat People" ( movie theme song ), "Blue Jean", "Ashes To Ashes", Bowie with Queen ( album version, there is no live version of him singing it with them ) "Under Pressure", "Blackstar" from his final album.

No worries there Philip! Bowie had an amazingly long career, and even recorded his last album as he was dying of liver cancer. An amazing statement by an artist that he will live his life no matter what while he is alive. I must admit I have only listened to that one a few times because of the enormous gravity of the subject it's hard to listen to. That being said, lots of great great songs to check out with David Bowie. I'll certainly be sending more your way, featuring Carlos Alomar on guitar. I have in mind David Bowie's "Low" album from 1977. There are some absolutely all time classic guitar riffs from Carlos on this album that just have to be heard.

Lennon got a writing credit but his contribution to the song writing was limited to suggesting the title be “Aim” which Bowie changed to “Fame”. Carlos Alomar created the riff.
