This is how he opened a couple shows I saw in '83. Blew our heads off!

This is a monster song and also (as so often with Bowie) some monster musicians behind. The rhythm section is one hell of a unit! The dam trio. Carlos Alomar told a story of how he and they reacted when the intro just kept going..., they expected Bowie to come in and sing or wanted to change saying "it will never work" but Bowie insisted "keep it going, it will work, it will work". And indeed it does, like a slow train picking up speed and then you're on the ride. Check out the live versions from the Isolar II tour, the intros are insane. Note also there were only six songs on this album..., but what an album!! Listening to Carlos Alomar talking about it is a joy. Check him out on youtube. Carlos is a born storyteller (Bowie himself couldn't remember much from making this album).

This is a great list, and yet you could make another 3 or 4 lists with totally different songs on each one, and still have people nodding "yeah, great list"

Is Bowie pretty damn great? Only to the ones who have heard him! He continues to rock! And will until electricity fails us! Bowie!!!!!

Guitarist Earl Slick said he blew several amps generating the feedback that underlies much of the early part after the train sound. Love the rhythmic and textural switchups.
