Bowie was just one of those rare people who could quite literally talk about the most mundane, pointless things imaginable and yet be so captivating, so bloody interesting and fascinating, not just because of THAT voice, but his way with words, his diligence and ideas, just make him one of those rare icons. What I love is how freely and effortlessly he talks about his past, these extraordinary events and moments that the most avid fan would pay dearly to hear about, like they were nothing. Then you remember, this was his whole life, just something he went through day by day, he laughs and chuckles about it while we are left jaws gaping, desperately wanting more and he just flows with it. Such a joyous man to listen to, so sad when he passed.

@@outsidethepyramid I think he meant more of the 1983-1988 period. The songwriting on Tonight was kind of (MEH), and Never Let Me Down's production was godawful. There were great songs written on that LP but it was barred down by production. Thankfully the 2018 re-recording did it justice.

I love how the interviewer allows for silent pauses and gives Bowie the time to connect his thoughts.

This is one of the best interviews with David Bowie that I've seen. He could talk freely. He was so at easy and happy.

He could do it in a lot of them. But I don't like how they had to try to tear him apart in some of the other ones. Thank God he didn't give in. He avoided giving answers, tore up interview papers and told people that whatever it was they were wanting to know was his own business. That's a role model. Lol. And thank God he became a better person later on instead of a worse one.

He was an intellectual. He thought deeply about his art and philosophies, his spirituality...

The interviewer is so fortunate to have Bowie in such a reminiscing & thorough mood. He was always a gentleman, but not always this sentimental.

The world is such a duller place without Bowie in it, I truly thought he was immortal, I still cannot believe he is gone.

I love how he has styled his hair. It looks so cool.

His hair styled him. It's called genetics. Most men, not all, mind you, but most- have suffered massive damage to their follicles after puberty or certainly by their early 20's so that "styling" one's hair is no longer an option

+mano Fiske That's not true in Bowie's case. Bowie had great hair and a longtime hairdresser. That's how he met his wife Iman. She had the same hairdresser. He (the hairdresser) thought they would make the perfect couple, and invited them both to his birthday dinner in 1990. The rest, as they say, is history. By the way, Bowie is famous for his ever changing hair styles and hair color, thanks to his stylist. He even styled the couples' hair for Bowie and Iman's 1992 wedding in Italy.

I really wish I knew when and why british ppl started thinking Americans don't get jokes or sarcasm. Whooosh ppl exist in the UK too. Goddamn you guys are so pretentious and annoying. The interviewer is did bloody well. Kept quiet and he knows his place. He's not his friend, he's here to give Bowie the floor. And he did JUST that. He wasn't there for his own enjoyment. He was more than likely smiling A LOT. Body language IS a thing.

Life is fluid. and David Bowie understood this ..in his work ..his full body of work, in everything he did. such an inspiration ,true and real..so hard to find these days...rest in peace David Robert Jones..you will be sorely missed.

He was one of those people you thought would always be there. I loved Bowie's earlier stuff, absolutely hated Diamond Dogs, but you knew that the next album would be completely different again and that you could plug back in. With Bowie, there was something for everybody and his massive influence on music over half a century can never be forgotten.

The world seemed like a better place with Bowie around.

"Nothing in this world is a real reality, it's not something you can hold on to... it's a chance to rethink" ... this guy was on a whole new level. Whatever drove Bowie is something to be forever inspired by.

This was a great video. In most interviews, Bowie was so irritated with being asked the same dumb questions over and over about bisexuality and what he was trying to do with Ziggy Stardust that he just shut those topics down completely. Here he really had a go at explaining those things in his own words, without the interviewer interrupting him much, and it was just fascinating. "Aesthetically promiscuous," I love it! What a mind this man had...

David was too smart to be interviewed by MTV!

Wow. This is best Bowie interview I’ve ever seen. He’s soooo comfortable and open and seems in such a good place! His honesty and ability to self-reflect is what makes him a great songwriter and artist. That ability to intensely observe and philosophise, allows him to see patterns in things mere mortals cannot. He never lost that childlike desire to explore. Love you, David. My star man ⭐️

That's the first time I've heard the word loose described tastefully! In a long time at least! I didn't start listening to him til almost 3 years ago but I watch all the interviews. I have my favorites. And in almost all of them, you laugh, lol.

So down to earth and funny as heck. A real treasure of a man.

Such a sweet, funny, intelligent man that I fear we will never see the likes again!

I always adored and respected the way he speaks of himself as an amalgamation of every person, song, religion and country he has ever encountered. SOO talented...And SOO beautiful! Love him.

Bowie has long been a (hero?) of mine since I was 13 years old. I initially found him to be both shocking, and curiously astonishing. He seem to have a true artist's heart and lens. Looking up Bowie on KZread is like visiting a old departed friend or hero. Here it is almost 2020, and I am enjoying his musics and interviews all over again.

I love how he doesn’t make apologies for his thoughts that might come across to some as ‘pretentious’ or lofty.

I'm glad MTV news are sharing these interviews. Amazing how they don't look or feel dated at all, and many of these are well over 20 years old now (dang, we're getting old). I guess that's a testament to the man himself really, how in every era, in everything that he was, in everything that he did, David Bowie was (and still is) timeless.

Yes even though I know he’s gone I still keep half believing he’s still in a studio in New York working on something amazing.

I am absolutely in love with every single thing about this man here....every single thing about Bowie seems to have been created with the sole intent and purpose of making you fall in love with him

I just adore Bowie. If people listened to him back in the day, this world would be such so much better. He spoke on everything that was taboo back in the day.

I think a smile and one word from bowie - would've made anyone feel so important, he has the most genuine way about him, I'm in awe.

You're so right. I had the good fortune to meet him in 1987 and nothing was too much trouble for him. He was friendly, amusing, polite, charming and the most wonderful smile. He was so down to earth and treated you as an equal. I wish I could have spent more time with him, he was a real gentleman, they are few and far between these days. I do wish he hadn't done the drugs and smoking, though.

"I know a Beatle that I always liked"- how humble a wondrous fan and a grounded Pop star- to be able to walk that line with such integrity says a heap about him.

My niece was born in March of 2018 and I already put David Bowie for her to listen.

Handsome intelligent man sorely missed.

He was so well spoken, and genuine. You can tell he enjoyed just having the conversation. The Moroder story is gold, too.

It was just a song that he wrote about how he felt about fame. No wonder he wrote it. They treated him like shit and he respected them thoroughly nomatter what. Even if he didn't answer the questions, he respected them. Even Jomathan Ross...that perv. I think he had the hots for Dave and Dave wasn't gonna have it. I think that Ross was just trying to bully him, but eww...nevertheless, Bowie could pick better if he was gonna go down that road.

I enjoyed this interview... The leading questions were good and Bowie was very forthcoming. HOWEVER the interviewer lacked talent in following up on points Bowie made, he didn't flesh out the stories or dig more into what David said, and he dudnt keep the conversation going. He had a prepared set of questions and thats all he could say. When david would finish talking, there would be an almost awkward silence, instead of the interviewer continuing Davids train of thought...

Better to just shut up and let the other person speak if you don’t think you can add anything of value. Besides I like the fact that the more the interview just let Bowie talk the more we got. If anything the interviewer was fantastic and not making it about them or their ego

This poor, sad interviewer. Trotting out the same, tired, old questions. To have access to Bowie's brilliance and not go down those blind alleys with him as he's opening those doors, opting to choose to tread down the same, worn high street instead, is such an incredible waste. Bowie: "I know so many painters who title their works after they've done them, which is a real giveaway." Me: "Why? What does that mean to you? That they don't know what they're doing as they do it but can only tell you after it's done? Same with you as you went through stages of your career?" Interviewer: "Um, yeah. So, your previous characters were very 'white,' and then you played R&B..." No wonder Bowie went into hiding. How unfathomably boring these discussions must have been for him.

What a delicious morsel of a man. Love the way he kept it real.

This is a good interview, but I think the best one of all by far is Bowie in the Studio and ZDTV interview of 1999, which you can also find on youtube. It is absolutely amazing -- his humor, charm, wit and intellect come through like I've never seen anyplace else. Plus the last 10 minutes show the process of how he records a song in a studio, which is fascinating.

And the whole goal of the creative process is to create something as close as possible to what you have in mind. The interesting question for the artist isn't 'why do I have this idea' but rather 'how do I create this idea'.

+DreamPurpleFloyd Not necessarily. Focusing on the outcome- how do I express this idea- is one way of creating a piece of art. But it is equally valid and arguably more interesting to focus on the process itself. In that way of working, the artist has no fixed idea of what the outcome will be, and uses aspects of the process- self imposed rules, accidents, chance, collaboration etc- to influence the direction of the work. They may finally shape that into something more intentional, which would be like the painter coming up with a title at the end of the painting, as Bowie mentions, but they didn't set out with a particular result in mind when they began. Bowie himself used various 'experimental' techniques, cut-up lyrics being one, and it seems he took a more process-based approach to his work than an outcome based approach.

Exactly. There's no "correct" way to make art. You can start with an idea, or start with a process, or something else entirely, but it's wrong to say that there is only one way to do art. Sure certain mediums may lean one way or the other, but as long as you make a good piece of art, the process isn't going to discount that.

“Aesthetically promiscuous” is innate Neuroplasticity. “Things outside,” what’s on the outside?” The definition of never getting stuck in a rut. So brilliant. Kabuki, drag, the drag/priesthood history. To drag in every piece of information and put it into it. Process over meaning. Titled works after completion is a real giveaway. The idea of being trapped or pinned down as a writer. He was an authentic Deleuzian!

it's such a pity he never wrote his memoirs , I remember during the 90's news about DB planning to write his memoirs it said he even got a big amount of money in advance so that the publisher would have the rights to publish it....... sadly enough it never happened because I'm sure that it would have been one of the best !

I have to admit I've never been a fan of his music, in fact didn't realize he could actually sing until his duet with Bing Crosby which I absolutely love. However, as an interview he's always been one of my favourites. It would have been fun doing coffee with him.
