David Ball -- Riding With Private Malone [REACTION/RATING]

Ойын-сауық

David Ball's song "Riding With Private Malone" caught me off guard after a minute or two of development within the song. This is a song of dreams, dreams broken, heartbreak, beauty, motherhood, and service to one's country. Brace yourself.

I passed a Hummer vehicle on side of the road for sale and asked the owner if I could test drive it. After the test drive, I asked him why he was selling it. He said that his son was in the service and while home on leave told him that he was going to purchase one when he got out of the service. So, as a surprise gift and welcome home his father bought him a Hummer. A month before it was time for him to come home the soldier was killed. At this point his dad had no further use for the Hummer. It is rare when we are cast into such an episode in life. I was struck with a strong sentiment for the father never to be forgotten.

I'm one of those people that when I hear a song Like "Riding With Private Malone" for the first time, I check to see who wrote it first, (my hero's have always been songwriters) then I look to see what else they may have recorded. I missed the days when you heard a good song on the radio you go try and find the album, which in this case was Amigo, which is an awesome album. I have since bought just about everything I can get my hands on by Mr. Ball. I feel he deserves a lot more credit as a singer and a songwriter than he receives.

Hey man, just came across ya lookin for this song. Last night, drivin' home after a weary night a new job, my classic country station stuck this one on...and I lost it! I'm a longtime songwriter and musician and have heard thousands of great ones, but this tune DESTROYED ME. Thank you for listening 2 your peeps and covering this, your dead on, and I appreciate your take on it. Love the facts also, that this song has absolutely no fat on it, and suprises and elevates with every verse, what a Gem!

This is written by one of my favorite songwriters, Thom Shepard, he as a “sequel” to this song, although story wise more of a prequel in which the main character in the song is Malone’s battle buddy… it’s called “Last letter home” performed my Thom, another great one my him, which might hit close to home for you is “New York to Montana”… the story is tied into the attack on the towers, and there was also a book written on it and possibly a film at some point.

In 1977, I became a military wife who's husband was deployed to Israel for six months on UN Peacekeeping duty. I knew the possibilities of him coming home in a casket was very real because at that time Isreal was a real hot bed of destruction, and he was one of 12 men sent to the Golan Heights to replace 12 men who had been killed there. I was married nine weeks when he left. Riding With Private Malone gave me the chills the first time I heard it. This could have happened to any man who was or who is in the military. Thankfully, my husband came home right on time six months later and I thanked God for that. If Riding with Private Malone doesn't hit your heart, you have no heart. To every service man and woman out there, Canadian or American, thank you for doing the job that you have chosen to take on on behalf of all of us.
