That's all right. And the most important word is the musicality. There are some other good drummers but no drummer is as musical on this level of practice as he is. They're all drummers but he really is a musician...

@@williamperri3437 I think they are all equal immortals, though I need to see a bit more from Chambers to comfortably include him, but that’s not my main point. I wouldn’t put one over the other because they each bring a unique aspect to musicality. I personally prefer Dave’s drum sets and tunings, his many Dave Weckl bands and songs, his phrasings, his use of polyrhythms, and his dynamics.

Wow. Just wow. Everything about this solo is astounding. What an amazing player Weckl is. I love his his groove and phrasing in this solo. Sounds like he's playing some phrases from the Zildjian days performance with Gadd and Vinnie? Anyone else hearing those Mozambique'ish patterns? Beautiful. His technique continues to improve and become more fluid and powerful. His Yamaha Phoenix kit has the best drum sound I've ever heard. Ever. Those drums just sing. The tone is ridiculous.

Hey! DrumNUT; I was the head drum tech for the MDF for over 15 years, and I know for a fact that Weckl uses his own mics that he puts on, programs his own sound with that Yamaha mixer you see beside him, and sends his own pre-mixed signal to the FOH. And this was the same for other clinics I have done with Dave. So, 'they' didn't miss that! Then he wipes the mixer to default so no one steals (copies) his presets - even me! Dave is Dave, and that's the way he wanted his 10" to sound - always good - always Dave!

When we remember 25 years ago what was said and written about Dave Weckl ! That he was a cold and arrogant drummer, only a pure "technician” without heart, soul nor feeling... Today, the Top Drummers are monsters as Virgil Donati, Thomas Lang or Marco Minneman who THEM are “mathematical machines” searching complexity for complexity, or the absolute performance. Yes, what they do is awesome, hallucinating and of an incredible difficulty. But where is the musicality ? Where are the nuances and the smoothness in their way of playing ? Where is the SILENCE between two notes, like with Dave Weckl ?

I've had the pleasure of having a lesson with Dave, and he couldn't have been less arrogant or cold. He's got a dry personality and can be slightly introverted. He was completely genuine, humble, and kind in our lesson. Changed my drumming life.

I agree, but in defence of drummers like Lang, their style is about anything BUT silence. To hit the drums with the power and ferocity of monster drummers, to me, is an amazing feat. When I think of musicality and nuances, I think of Bernard Purdie. When I listen to Steely Dan's Babylon Sisters, I absolutely melt. Talk about musicality & nuances. Weckl was a monster in his own right when he was with Chick Corea. I remember watching the Buddy Rich memorial solo with Weckl, Gadd and Colaiuta, thinking if you ate Weckl and Gadd...you would shit out Colaiuta, whom to me, is one of the most well rounded drummers...ever.

  • @MoSkent1

John Knight Colaïuta and Wekl are in my opinion the two most complete drummers of the world, able to play ALL with an equal talent. (Like André Ceccarelli in France, but who for more than 25 years, doesn't play any more but of the Jazz) Even if I criticize a little Lang, that doesn't prevent me from being subscribed to Donati's site on KZread and from following his career ! And you are right John, “Pretty” Purdie is the Master of the nuances. Like Peter Erskine and his Ride Cymbal…

You are still amazing, my friend. I have been with you since 2,000. Your touch is what people seem to forget. TOUCH is not so easily trained. You have to remember ,,, that people that have ( Mozart type ) skills,, are insanely lucky to play that way. Gavin Harrison, has that " Mozart skill set, in a Progressive mind set. You just dont say ,,, Hey, Ill learn that. The question is

I've heard both Gavin Harrison and Dave Weckl refute this in clinic, both saying that they indeed learned it. Paraphrasing Weckl: "The more I practice, the more talented people say I am."

@@scottdoyle7649 I was gonna say the same thing. Jazz teaches you to play gracefully and lightly with dynamics that could only come from mastery of rudiments. Heavy metal teaches heavy handed powerful and fast drumming that is full of energy. You have to hit harder, play faster, and play double bass at ludacris speeds. The techniques involved in achieving all of these aspects of metal drumming are vastly different than the techniques employed in jazz drumming. The point is that jazz will eventually teach you this level of fluidity with proper practice and study of the genre. Other genres teach emphasis on different aspects of playing the drums.

I was never able to appreciate Weckl's work, not because he's no good, but just because I was not ready for him. :-) This solo is surely one of the best I've heard, and not only from him! While listening, I was thinking that being a good drummer is being able to make YOUR sound, and this is certainly Weckl's.

Honestly I think the majority of the time people play RLrrllkk. Unlike normal PDs or PDDDs you don’t have to switch leading hands because the kick is handling the last two partials. After reading this comment I might try playing PDDs and moving the kick around, e.g. Klrrll, Rkrrll, Rlkkll, Rlrrkk, and same for inverts, Kllrrl, Rkkrrl, Rllkkl, Rllrrk.

This is truly mastery in motion, you can tell by the way he plays that he has a certain amount of appreciation for his instrument. I know there are many drummers who just Beat the drums. This will remind everyone who watches that the drums are an instrument to be played, not just beaten.

I'm listening with my STAX ear speakers. Nothing wrong at all. No distortion. Bad hearing or bad equipment at your end. The mics are placed the same on the toms, as you can clearly see.

I got to see Dave a few years ago in Anaheim at a NAMM show.. he talked about how each of has something to say with our music. and there's room for everybody to contribute to the conversation. I have always been impressed and inspired by his playing and teaching videos.. but that really impressed me with him as a person.
