DarwinFPV TinyApe Freestyle | A Serious Contender for Drone of the Year, Really!

Ғылым және технология

Drones are getting more and more expensive everyday..At this point, it might actually be cheaper to build your own drone. Well, there a company call Darwin FPV that intends to stop that trend by building quality drones at really affordable prices. Their last drone, the BabyApe was a HUGE success among pilots. Today we’re testing their latest drone, The TinyApe and if it’s anything like the BabyApe, we might have a winner on our hands. For more information, Check Out: darwinfpv.com/?ref=XgRvNQaU

Just got one today. Joshua Bardwell and you both recommend them so I'm giving one a try. I LOVE my NanoBaby2s. The size makes these small flyers SO much fun in spaces where larger quads are a no go. The Tiny Ape seems to be at the sweet spot of size to be able to fly it almost anywhere AND good freestyle flight characteristics. Looking forward to flying it when it gets here. REALLY appreciate you going through all the setup and flashing process! Great upload.

@@OneManUnmanned Tried setting it up tonight and am wondering why it won't bind to any of my Radiomaster TX's. I saw it says ELRSV2.0 on their sight and assumed I could flash the RX with 2.5.1 because that's a version of 2.0, but it doesn't look like it. Am I missing something here? I've tried to bind through the CLI and through the receiver bind tab and even looked to see if I could flash my TX back to 2.0 (which can't be done either). Are they really selling a BNF quad that can't be flown with ANY modern ELRS TX's? This has got to be user error, right? Can you please clarify and help me out? Thanks! (I also bought an ELRS BNF Baby Ape and am now thinking that was a bad choice also).

@@OneManUnmanned Ok! Got something figured out thanks to ELRS discord. Got it bound and functioning with my TX12! BetaFlight 4.3.2 is a no go with SPI ELRS RX apparently. So I back flashed the TinyAPe FC to 4.3.1 and did the bind steps and it worked!!! Yay! Flying her tomorrow!!!

Sorry about the late reply, I was out of town. Apparently SPI receivers are pretty difficult in the developers to keep current firmware. I'm thinking 4.4 or 4.5 might be the last Betaflight to support SPI receivers. I have mine on 4.3 and it works.

Yeh, I know it makes for a longer video, but honestly things are not perfect and don't go perfectly as planned. My goal is to show what customers/pilots might experience when buying a/any drone. It's another reason why I don't do voiceovers when flying. I'll let the viewers make their conclusions during the flight, then see if it aligns with mine post-flight. Thanks Rusty!

These DarwinFPV TinyApes fly GREAT. One or two minor crashes and you will loose a motor even without screwing in the props. I now have 1 dead motor on each of the 4 TinyApes I had purchased. This would be a winning product if they did some thing about these motors. The TinyHawk boards aren't the best but the motors were strong. Too bad the tinyHawk motors don't have the same mounting pattern. Time to have discussions on who makes the best most durable 1103 or if an 1104 motor would be a better upgrade. These are the models you want to fly through swing sets etc, you don't want to replace motors every time you even touch something. These do seem to fly fine even with the 525 and the 660 RDQ batteries I use on them. All mine came with ELRS 2.0 So some clarification, the Motor SHAFT is breaking. The motor that died had the screws in the prop, and the 2 that have broken shafts do not have the screws in the props. So it seems that even with no screws in the props you are not safe.

Man, that sucks…I was waiting for your update videos, actually checking the past two days. I’ve also heard of weak/delicate boards on the TinyHawk Freestyle. As far as the TinyApe, mine still works, but I also haven’t crashed it yet. I actually bought new props for it today(just in case). I don’t know about any decent replacement motors, but I’m sure they’re out there. I hope you get them back in the air and post an updated video.

@@OneManUnmanned When flying they fly great. They really seem to do well with the Gemfans, and fly more docile as a trainer with the Avan Rush 2.5 Props, still quiet as well. I have ordered 6 x 1104 Sunny Sky 7500kv Micro Drone Motors, so I hope they fit. In the mean time I will be swapping motors on the frames I have with each other to get back in the air. I really don't want to beat up on this quad, it's nice, and almost a TinyHawk clone, so far all the other components seem durable and built well, it's just that motor issue. I really hope I am the only one with the issue, or that we find a nice durable replacement motor, then problem solved!

I don’t know what firmware is on the most recent version of these drones. The ELRS receiver firmware has to be similar to the one in the radio/transmitter. So, if your radio has 3.x, then your receiver in the drone needs to be 3.x as well. If it’s 1.x or 2.x they will not bind.

In your video you mentioned replacing the antennas. What antennas would you use instead? I placed an order for the TinyApe after watching your video (was going to get a Tinyhawk 2 Freestyle originally), and I'm thinking of picking up some better antennas as well. As a newbie, I'm looking at the options and wondering which ones are long enough to reach their connectors and still fit in the little holders on the back of the quad.

Picking an Antenna is very subjective. Any circular polarized antenna should work well(as long as they match your goggle’s antenna polarization. For example Left hand with Left hand and right hand with right hand). I have a few spares from Flywoo and HGLRC that I plan to use, but there are some nice ones like Foxeer Lolipops, True RC and Lumenier Micro AxII that should work as well. Just make sure it has a U.Fl connector.

I have the 2S version with HDZERO, so I don't know if it's the same FC board. Mine freaks out a little during outdoor flights, but not in BetaFlight. Is it spinning out of control in the "Receiver" Tab of Betaflight? And is it doing it with the radio powered off or on? What I'm trying to figure out, is the command/input coming from the radio, or is the drone is doing it on its own. With the radio on and connected to the drone, you should see Channel 1-4 inputs(Aileron,Elevator,Rudder,Throttle) at 1500 if all sticks(including throttle) are centered. The last thing I would to is re-calibrate your accelerometer in the "Setup" tab. Just make sure the drone is in a level/flat surface.
