Dark Souls All Armour Sets Historical Evaluation - Part 1/3

A full detailed evaluation of all the armour sets in Dark Souls. This is Part 1 of a series of 3 videos where I will discuss and historically evaluate all the sets of armour in the game. If the series goes well I will make more evaluating also DS2 and DS3 and all the armour sets in those games. I hope you enjoy it ! :D
About Dark Souls
Dark Souls (ダークソウル Dāku Sōru?) is an action role-playing video game developed by FromSoftware and published by Namco Bandai Games for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. A spiritual successor to FromSoftware's Demon's Souls and the second installment of the Souls series, Dark Souls began development under the working title of Project Dark.
The game was released in Japan on September 22, 2011, and in North America, Australia, and Europe the following month.
In August 2012, the "Prepare to Die" edition of Dark Souls was released for PC, featuring additional content previously unavailable to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 users. On October 23, 2012, the additional content from the PC version was released as downloadable content for consoles under the title Artorias of the Abyss. Dark Souls takes place in the fictional kingdom of Lordran. Players assume the role of a cursed undead character who begins a pilgrimage out of the Undead Asylum to discover the fate of the Undead.
Dark Souls received positive reviews upon its release, with critics praising its combat depth, marked but fair difficulty, and deeply rooted lore.[6] In April 2013, FromSoftware announced Dark Souls had sold 2.37 million copies.

Havel's armour was cut from a large stone slab as stated by the shield which seems to be of the same material. Also his ring allows the wearer to carry a lot more weight so that is likely the magic allowing it to move or even be worn. So yes it is very fantasy

Strictly speaking WH40k Sphesssmehreeen armour can be explained due to you know... projectile weapons. Massive pauldrons protect the head and neck from the sides and the backpack protects the back of the head and the spine etc. The Mehreeens also have super-human senses, reflexes, strength and so on, as such the only thing that can really get to them like that is a surprise attack from where they cant see. Previously mentioned super-human thingies also apparently cover for any issues that come from not being able to see jack shit.... dunno, i played Necrons. I do realise this is an ancient comment chain but what the hell eh?

iopklmification It takes something like 45 endurance, havels ring and favor and protection to med roll in all of havels stuff. He really is just wearing big ass rocks, and his weapon and shield are also big ass rocks. I'm not sure he could roll at all without the ring.

  • @RaineAmorie

+doomlord117 Well technically his weapon is a broken dragon's fang if I recall correctly. Still your point stands, his armor and shield are essentially just carved up boulders. Havel himself arguably wasn't 100% human though, given the demi-godlike nature of a lot of the lore characters.

  • @drizzt7dourden7

i agree that he wasnt 100% human but i wouldnt call him demi god like. If i recall correctly havel and his followers were (basicly) the churches powered up super soldiers to fight against the arcane users. they had to undergo harsh training and most likely body enhancements via miricals

  • @racoon965

    @racoon965

His followers were super soldiers but bishop havel himself was probably part of the same race/species/genus whatever as ornstein, artorias etc. It states in the ring description it was a gift from havel to his men to inspire and help them. "This ring was named after Havel the Rock, Lord Gwyn's old battlefield compatriot. Havel's men wore the ring to express faith in their leader and to carry a heavier load." Havel being lord gwyn's OLD battlefield compatriot is further evidence of him being god like, if he's fighting side by side with an actual god and has a similar lifespan, it also shows havel didn't need no fuckign rings bithc he has all the stamina, health and endurance he could ever want.

In defense of the Havel set, it is stated in the game that no ordinary human could wear it. It was made to withstand the attacks of a dragon and that's pretty much why Havel was known through the kingdom(when the kingdom was alive and well) and I guess Havel was sort of a demigod too since his best friend was sort of a god (Gwyn, Lord of Cinders).

Havel wasn't a demi-god, he was a full-fledged god from the same race/species Gwyn and the silver knights come from. Him being a bishop was a localization error, the original Japanese text stated that Havel had bishops under his command, not that he was one.

the reason why the hollows continue wearing their armor after it is broken is because they are trying to hold onto their identity as it crumbles away. and the reason why the player wears it is because he is a hoarder who likes to dress up. also it's the only armor sets that looks sexy for the female characters while still providing some protection.

Since time flows strangely in Lordran, and there is no time "line" to speak of, can we assume anything past or future in Lordran? Perhaps there was no first flame... the first flame was actually a later flame sent back in time... that then caused the events that caused itself. Like the song of time in Zelda, where the fuck did it originally come from???

This looks pretty good, I'd be glad to see more episodes of this. (big dark souls fan) One criticism: when you get to the more "fantasy" outlandish armors still give an evaluation of their protection levels as if worn by a humanoid who can carry that weight. (Havel was a human but wore a magic ring that allowed him to wear super heavy armor, this ring can be your excuse going forward for heavy sets) Havels set is supposed to be made of stone, (but is actually the scales of the stone dragons) and that was not addressed.

Metraton, about armours designs from different centeries, it's possible that there's an explanation in the game's lore given by Solaire. He says "In Lordran, the flow of time is distorted. The flow of time itself is convoluted; with heroes centuries old phasing in and out". So I gues it's possible that the Elite Knight's armour seen in the game is from an older time (I think you find it in a corpse) and the Knight's armour is from a later time. Great job! Looking foward for next one!

Particularly with the presence of undead and various immortal beings that have overstayed their welcome. It's implied that the Darksign has been around for many centuries, allowing more than enough time for people to become undead while chain mail and tabards are popular, and for plate to develop afterwards.

Very well done, I get the whole historical evaluation part, but i think for some particular armour sets you should use the game context, because it makes much more sense: the hollow sets are stuff worn by hollows, so they are not even noticing their armor crubling by this time; havel set is bulky on purpose, because its owner had superhuman strength and magic rings, you have to get a pretty high carry weight to move in that *stone* armor. And don't bother trying to determine the time period in lordran, we all know that time is twisted there. Otherwise, keep the good work up!

Silver Knight set is my favorite of the ones shown and evaluated so far. The Black Knight set isn't much different, but you have to reach end game territory to get it. Metatron if you need help with Dark Souls games in any way, whether tips for progression or what armor sets you would like to review, in the words of Solaire whose armor you reviewed, 'I would relish a chance to assist you." I am a huge fan of these games and really hope you do more videos about the armor sets in the games, as well as the weapons if possible. The simpler ones obviously, like halberds, falchions, different weapons that your channel may not have covered already. If you would like to talk to me about these things just message me. Keep up the great work with your channel! ;)

In regards to the Elite Knight set, I always thought that there was a plate cuirass underneath the tabard. The "Elite" part being that it was made of better quality steel with more actual plates (like the greaves) on it, along with riveted mail around the tassets. Same with the Alva set from Dark Souls II. You can actually see what I mean with the Firelink armour set in Dark Souls III, which is in a similar style to the Knight/Elite/Alva sets: It has a plate cuirass visible underneath the thin tabard.

Hey Metatron, I would love to see a video of you wearing a full suit of Medieval armour, or even a Roman armour, seeing how you actually put it on, and walk around, maybe even run with it. You could do it with a friend filming you and helping you dress the armour pieces themselves. Of course this will only be possible if you actually have a full suit of armour on your hands which I don't know if you do.

Ahh, this was a really good video. I like how this works as both sort of a realistic evaluation of this design style, but also a comparison of the influence historical armor had on these fantasy designs. I love the design of dark souls, but I tend to look at it from an artistic perspective rather than historical so this is cool insight. I'm going to like this series, especially as we get to the more ridiculous armors later in the game. Smough's armor in particular was described by the director as "A suit of armor no sane human would ever design." I my be slightly paraphrasing, but it was to that effect. I also like the equally ridiculous Catarina set, which is a bizarre metal parody of padded armor. I think Solaire's bare hands on an otherwise realistic, if antiquated, set may have something to do with his ability to throw lightning. And notably, Haval the Rock needs a special ring to bear the load of his armor. A lot of these unrealistic traits have some in-universe explanation, which is a nice touch on part of the designers... Of course, I doubt that will hold true for all the armors especially as you get later in the game and the sets start getting silly.

I think the idea behind the Warrior Set is that they're an explorer and a traveler who is always on the move, and that their armor needs to be light enough that they can both get in an out of it on their own, and that they can wear it all day throughout a long day of travel on foot. The fact that it's mostly leather with a few iron bits, which you said was an eastern thing, is probably due to the Warrior having been so many different places and incorporating different styles into their armor. Very low-key fantasy, for sure.

  • @tadfibonacci4926

I think the reason why some armor sets "stick out" as being in the wrong era, for example, Solair's armour. He's wearing chain armour when full plate armour is readily available, but there is an explaination for this. Lore wise, since the flame is fading, and fire and light has a direct impact with time, time in the world of Dark Souls is also convoluted. Heroes of old can sometimes show up and be interacted with and talk to when the time and world lines match up. So the reason why Solair and some other characters were wearing armours of old is because they are from the past.

in the case of the first armor set it is true that it is fantasy and this is only for education, but i think you should also take into account that the default knight set is not half leather due to it being worn that way, and the helmet lacking fluting tells a story aswell; the story being that this entire set is pieces of different armor, so the leather side is leather most likely due to the wearer (starting knight class) not having the rest of the pieces, even the helmet, is clearly from a different set already in the game, the elite knight set, it only has it's visor up. the knight who's wearing all of this; most likely scrapped these pieces of armor from what he could find. or maybe lost the parts in some manner etc. love your content stay safe!

The Elite Knight set is definitely my favorite. Although the knight, warrior, and chainmail sets also look good to me. The Giant set and Brass set are also interesting ones. I'm curious about what you have to say about the remaining armor in the game. I think you'll like the fluted knight armor set featured in Demon's Souls. I think it closely resembles 16th century armor very well, from what I can remember. Or at least it is more accurate than the armors featured in Dark Souls. Please keep evaluating the armor throughout the Souls games! Some look really good and practical, while plenty of them do look very over the top and fantasy.

Actually, I watched through, despite never having played Dark Souls, for the interesting tidbits like when you talked about frogmouth helms, and noted the tournament/battlefield distinction. It's often worth listening to a person who knows a lot about an interesting subject talk about anything, because such tidbits inevitably sneak in. :)

For the Havel set, yes it weight a ton or so, that's why there is a Havel's ring so it can be worn. normally without the said ring, it's likely that equip load of player will go over 100% and can just crawling. But i get your point.

Part of the reason for the time differences, is because of the undead outbreak, it's very possible solaire became undead before plate armour was widely spread, and because of the mass collapse of civilizations due to the undead armour development could have been stunted across cultures. Gotta say though they really made a good fantasy setting while usually creating good weapons and Armour. -Keep up the videos, you're doing great! Oh and my favorite is definitely a mix match of the knights set and the elite knights set, though some silver knight stuff is cool too.
